    I am so glad that I found this channel. We are new to raising sheep (1 year) and just now this week getting our first batch of lambs from our 8 Katahdin ewes this week. So much to learn, so many questions and uncertainty. This channel is very helpful. Thank you so much for sharing.

    Please do more sheep video's! 🐑🐏 this was very informative! I'm wondering how you feel about barn raised sheep who are kept indoors 24/7. I've been watching another UA-cam channel that barn raises there flock of 200. I personally don't like the method, I think it's cruel to keep them indoors in pens for there whole life.

    • @thetruepatriot7733
      @thetruepatriot7733 Рік тому

      @BusyBeeFarms what makes it cruel and disgusting? I found that raising sheep indoors is cruel... those sheep never experience the outdoors, they have no stimulation or exercise.

    • @thetruepatriot7733
      @thetruepatriot7733 Рік тому +1

      @BusyBeeFarms oh ok... my bad, I read your comment wrong. I'm not a fan of that Sandy Brook sheep farming channel. Sandy raises all of her sheep in small pens, the animals are locked inside 24/7. It's horrible, the pens are overcrowded and the sheep are neurotic from the lack of stimulation. Her indoor sheep have more health conditions and miscarriages than the average pasture raised sheep. Farmers raise sheep indoors soely because it's easier, cheaper, and requires less land. It's a selfish way to farm... I'm a meat eater and I have no problem with raising livestock for slaughter, BUT the least we can do as humans is treat the animals right before killing them. These animals deserve to live a healthy life.

    The young lady said when using regenerative agriculture, you bring the sheep behind the cows. How does that work? Is cow feces pick up first or is it couple days after to allow it to absorb in the ground prior to bringing the sheep?

    • @HeiferUSA
      @HeiferUSA  Рік тому

      It has more to do with forage preference. Sheep eat what the cows leave behind.

      Good question! The hosts of "Sheep Stuff Ewe Should Know" (one of Christine's favorite livestock podcasts) raise sheep in Dixon and Auburn, California. Check out their podcast to learn more: open.spotify.com/show/0wu6MF1PIBbcwp9zrJCVqI
      Additionally, Paicines Ranch (in Paicines, CA) is another regenerative farm that raises sheep, cattle, pigs, pastured poultry, and more. Check them out here: paicinesranch.com

    • @HeiferUSA

      Hi Jon! We don't use any shelters for the sheep as our winters are pretty mild. During the summer they can seek shade under trees.

    how much land would you need or do you have to feed 125 ewes with their lambs all year round?

    • @HeiferUSA
      @HeiferUSA  2 роки тому +1

      Stocking rates depend on a variety of factors including forage density and quality, anamial species and breeds, seasonal climates, etc. There is no one plug and play solution that fits all farms. A good strategy would be to find a farmer in your region that is raising animals in a similar way that you would want to do and talk to them about their practices. Also, you can enroll in a holistic land management course from Savory Institute or reach out to your local Ag extension agency to find out more.

    • @magnuseriksson5547
      @magnuseriksson5547 Рік тому

      I guess the question is about stocking density. How many animals per unit of area... like per acre, for example.😊

    Hi there I wonder if you can advise?
    Me and my friend have 10 Jacob sheep that we are now in lamb here in the uk, Would you recommend that we provide a shelter for them? I notice you have a shelter in the background of this video there on the hill. Do you think they need this? We are unsure whether to provide this.
    Note that the weather currently is around 6deg Celsius
    Thank you
