I was 9 years old in 1944 and living in Surrey. The whole area of commonland around our town was covered in war materiel of all kinds. We were so used to seeing it, we hardly noticed any more. On the night before D Day, I was in bed and heard many planes flying above my house. I was used to the constant traffic and thought little of it and thought they were off on another raid on Germany. In the morning, I woke up and prepared for school and to my surprise, every lorry, tank, armoured car and the stacks of shells, which had long lain under cover, had completely vanished. It was the exciting talking point at school, but it wasn't until later in the day, that we were informed about the invasion in Normandy. Now I'm 88 and living in New Zealand for the last 57 years ,but those days are still quite strong in my memories. I find it a bit amusing to see history documentaries on TV and realise that I've actually lived through an epic time. Unfortunately, the way things are in the world today, it looks like nothings changed for the better.
our housekeeper took me out in to our street to see hundreds of bombers (all heading to our Raf bomber base) holding her hand I said "What is is Aunty Ruby? "It's VE Day David as I was only 4YO I had no idea of acronyms, but it ws exciting.
I grew up on these. I was proud to be an American when I was young.

When I a briefing, and the question of "Any questions?" comes up, it's usually a distant voice at the back of the room with the reply, "Any point??"
