- Part 2 of a 2 part video. I documented some of the job I did on replacing the gearbox myself and spending $850. Other option is to have a mechanic do the job for $5000+.
First, I clean out the milky fluid from trans cooler and lines.
Then I remove original, and install a good used gearbox/transfer case/torque converter.
I leave vehicle on the ground, with rears up on railroad sleepers.
I used another vehicle to move the gearbox into position under left side of the P38.
I used an engine crane to lift bellhousing through engine bay.
I use a trolley jack, bottle jack, and blocks of wood. It is not easy.
Reason for box change:
I had installed a used leak-free trans cooler, as my original had a small leak. The new one had water in it. I did not flush it. After a few weeks driving, my friction plates were worn in the gearbox. The box failed. Vehicle wouldn't Drive unless high revving. Water had turned the fluid milky and wrecked it all.
Worn friction plates in box will need a rebuild. May do this myself soon. For now this was a complete success as it is driving perfectly again, allowing me time to work on the original box and still have the car back on the road.
I also kept that $5000 to myself and made sure the job was done right.
Great video!
Great theory on this video
No theory. Just document of the job being done, and getting a used transmission installed.
Is that a tree trunk on top of the floor jack??
I believe so. Pieces of wood.
