Same here brother, same here. I had been trying to remember the name of that old game for ages when I finally stumbled across this video. Scrubbing through all the old versions of Lode Runner that just didn't look right until I got to The Legend Returns and that was it. Amazing game. Amazing memories.
Legend Returns/Mad Monks revenge are the absolute best versions - great music(atleast from psx/saturn version on), beautiful drawn graphics that are not too retro but not too modern either, great gameplay additions(bombs, items )that don't interfere with classic gameplay too much(if the level doesn't have them you play just like the old lode runner), online and splitscreen multiplayer, easy level editing/sharing for infinite replay value. It's just the absolute best of the ports
One 'version' that this video's author (understandably) didn't know about is *Apple Lode Runner* , a remake by Spoonbill Software. Along with a level editor, this freebie has thousands of levels available including the original and Championship ones. People originally had to e-mail the author and wait a few days to get this game but it's currently available for download via his web site. Feel free to give it a try when you have the chance. ^_^
Loricel did some good sound sample compression in the ST adaption! I always admire the fact they managed to get the old speaker to play authentic samples as a means of music and sound effects in an otherwise primitive sound card. The game controls in their games may not be very good, but I definitely can say that they win in the sound department for computer games in the mid-late 1980s!
The port of the Lode Runner game on the NES remains the best and most importantly this is the very first game made not by Nintendo itself, but by third-party developer and publisher Hudson Soft!!!
Its also the first American game to hit Japan. As far as I know, its also the best selling port of the game, as most people that played the game on computer got it from a pirated copy of the game.
It's a mediocre version, because of limited field of view. People are so fond of it probably only because it was distributed for NES and cute music/graphics
The PC version by Sierra was being made about the time they were talking about merging with Broderbund. If that'd gone ahead, it'd have meant Activision would own Lode Runner now.
Some of the earlier more elaborate versions made me think "what if there was a super intense lode runner" and then I got to the GBA version and laughed
Lode Runner DS and Battle Lode Runner I think are some of my personal favouritesthe former because I just fell in love with the Cubic redesign. That being said, Lode Runner Legacy has been an amazing nostalgia trip to play through.
I just know the PC-Engine Version, but therefore I know it profound: it's one of our most played party games since 30 years! It is almost on par with Bomberman! I would even imagine it is the best multiplayer version of lone runner ever
N64 Lode Runner might have looked ahead of its time it seems short 5 worlds + 136 levels + 20 bonus levels visually it seems like it was made in a lazy, rushed, way
@Diskun or the N64 Lode Runner looked like the publisher infograms wanted to cut the costs as in pay the developer less by cutting the quality if the original Lode Runner creator Doug Smith had helped them out or was involved it could’ve, might’ve, would’ve be better
Pre-1984 ports: - NES/Famicom is one of my favorite port due to Field of View, graphics and sound. - Enterprise have additional enemy for extra difficulty Sharp X68000 port: It's NES/Famicom port on STEROIDS uh i mean x2 speed Although the uploader missed the Lode Runner Championship which is one of the challenging lode runner games on that time (originally released in 1983 on Apple II while Famicom in 1985). I only cleared 7/50 stages during my childhood days.
Legacy Mode seems ok. Lode Runner doesn't need enhanced graphics. And Japanese games for Super Famicom are absurd. Why the hell they added 5 minutes long intro, top down nonsense and shit load of text boxes? This game doesn't need a freaking story. 🤦♂️
Played the c64 version back then and still give it a try sometimes....the sprite animations look really well for that era and still hold up. Great gameplay
I recent tried this game again and absolutely loved it. Never thought it was so fun back then. I made some playthrough videos for this game. Please do support my channel and hope you like it. ua-cam.com/video/huI3JkwMPXM/v-deo.html
Hello thank you for this fantastic video I discovered many other versions of this game that I really like thanks to you ! On the other hand, you forgot a machine... I'll let you guess which one... greetings !
I remember playing the Apple II version. Loved it. Interesting Irem’s Arcaro version replaced the robot guards with cavemen, and one SNES version had the focus on sweets instead of gold (the runner had to get candies instead of gold bullion) while another had the runner as an anthropomorphic animal. Lode Runner Legacy you wonder if in the non-classic mode it was Minecraft-inspired.
A game made by Doug E. Smith in 1983/84 for Brøderbund, in all computer systems must be followed by Brøderbund globally and while designed for Japanese-audiences version such as Arcade (for Irem) and Hudson's conversion (a FAMICOM/NES version of enemy looks like Bomber-Man). In the years later, the ownership of Lode Runner was taken by Tozai until today for making HD Lode Runner.
I like in that part 10:55 Lode Runner Nintendo version from NES. With a theme song, the player, gold, and the evil has make by Nintendo. RIP Doug Smith, Publisher of Lode Runner
Man. I have loved Lode runner ever since I played it on the Atari 800 (8 bit version). I have played Lode runner The legend returns back on windows and had played a little of the demo of Load Runner Legacy. I didn't know about these other versions that were for the super famicom, GBC, GBA, or the one on DS. The 360 one I never saw and looked sweet too! If only I knew about it at the time I would have grabbed it.
The Atari version wouldn't have looked like that on a real TV, it would have looked more colorful, due to the way color artifacting worked, the lines would merge and create colors.
I would like for the next video the Ballblazer ports for Atari 8-bit, Amstrad CPC, Apple II, Atari 5200, Commodore 64, MSX, ZX Spectrum, Atari 7800 & Famicom. Saludes from Costa Rica.
I remember playing lode runner at school when i was young (1990~1994). No idea which version it was nor which computer it was played on, but I remember levels had different colors (I remember levels with blue bricks, and others with red bricks). However, the longplays of all the versions I have watched so far only have one color. Any idea which version it could be? It was somewhat like ZX Spectrum / Commodore 64 / Enterprise 64 / BBC Micro versions I believe.

One of the most playable retro games of all time. It never gets old.
The Atari 8 bits version is using color artifacts, if you run the game in a CTR you will see it in "colors" instead of monochrome.
It's CRT
Oh wait you're taking about Crash Team Racing
You're right, but you can enable "artifacting mode" in the emulator's video settings. Almost all emulator users forget to enable that mode ...

They tend to exclude "unofficial" ports from these videos. All of the ones included are officially licensed titles.
Don't forget to mention Championship Lode Runner, it's like the Mario 2 of the Lode Runners, insane new levels with higher difficulty

My earliest memory of lode runner is the monochrome version I used to play at my cousins' place.
So many good times when playing Co-op. Always a bit of shenanigans to sabotage your team mate. Played during the Windows 1994 era.

True, it was common for some normal video gamers

My mom was literally on drugs with these on the Apple IIc and the Macintosh to the point I had to yell at her to let me play/do homework/use Paint 😂
Hahaha
Lode Runner Legacy looks beautiful! It goves me Mega Man 11 and Tron Legacy vibes as well.

I love how the ST version uses a bit from smooth criminal for its intro 💀
The Enterprise 64/128 version has "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring" by Johann Sebastian Bach. It seems strange for a game like this.
