Can confirm. Maining Terry helped me figire out how to pull of quarter-circle-forwards and Dragon Punches, and got me into traditional fighters as a whole.
Honestly, I'd actually prefer it if all of the character reveals were almost an hour long, I love watching Sakurai talk about all the work he and his team put into the game

I felt that way about the Dragon Quest Hero direct as well. It's just so wholesome to see that he's not just honored to be able to have these characters in the game, he's just straight up a fan of them

I have a friend who mains Terry. We quickly began to like Terry through the funny things my friend would say while playing as him. Terry often says "Burn Knuckle" during his front special, but my friend thought he was saying "Radical", so he recently started saying "That wasn't very radical of you" when he gets launched. All of us in the group started using Terry's phrases for fun when we gathered in the games room at college. Every time Terry wins, everyone says "OK!" with him. We've also started saying "Are you OK?" a lot more often. One of the teachers asked where my friend was, and I just shouted "Are you OK?" down the hall. I got a faint "I'm OK!" from my friend who was in the storage room. He said he's going to start using "Buster Wolf" as a response to that. When we had a little tournament at the end of the first term, he won as Terry. Everyone cheered, and we all shouted "OK!" at his victory. After he won, he was relieved and also looked a bit exhausted, but he said "I think we can all agree that Terry Bogard is indeed the King of Fighters!" Everyone loves Terry.
If you’re wondering, terry isn’t saying “radical” he’s saying “burn knuckle” but terry’s voice actor is Japanese so it’s hard to understand what’s he saying.

"It's more important that a character is fun to play, not just recognizable" Yeah, I didn't know who Shulk was when I've seen a reveal trailer of him for Smash 4 so I've looked up his name on Google and found out what game he comes from. Yet, I have found him fun to play as after trying out for like an hour back in that Wii U game.
My brother always mained Ike in brawl, I started maiming him in Ultimate despite not knowing the game he came from. It was thanks to smash I checked out other games, and smash is my absolute faborutie game in all existence
I still cannot believe they added Terry in smash, the way he looks, plays, the music and the stage, the guest characters, everything about Terry’s inclusion is perfect! SNK got so much love in smash, and they deserve it! They truly are ahead of the time, and I’m so happy SNK got a lot of exposure to people who don’t know their games very well! Warms my heart

The problem with Hero is that they tried just a bit to hard to give them homages to their home series and ended up with a character that was kinda awkward and unbalanced (In terms of moveset, not tiers).

Notice how Sakurai said "Not just recognizable", which implies relevancy is actually an important aspect alongside how fun they are to play. It's not limited to simply being relevant at the present, being important/relevant during Nintendo's history at all is more accurate. Wii Fit Trainer, Mr. Game and Watch and etc were more relevant and/or recognizable than the like of Geno and Isaac even before they were even revealed.

I just want to say something real quick about the whole “Smash is only for good boys and girls” thing: Sakurai didn’t actually say this in the original Japanese version. As far as I know, he still joked about it, but he more clearly elaborated that putting Mai in the game would cause the CERO (the age rating system in Japan) to raise the age rating (CERO is infamously known for being very strict on what is or isn’t appropriate compared to other rating systems, if you didn’t know). I completely understand that some people are only throwing this quote around as a joke, but I’ve seen a lot people who seem genuinely confused or think Sakurai is a hypocrite for not including Mai but including Bayonetta and her/Joker’s guns, as well as ZSS’s and Shulk’s alt. costumes when this is mostly an issue out of his control. I’m assuming Bayo and Joker’s guns made it through due to the fact how unrealistic they are (no blood, for example) and while Bayo’s outfit is fairly sexual, she’s not exactly revealing much skin (and was HEAVILY toned down for her transition to Smash, a detail a lot of people seem to be forgetting). While a couple ZSS’s alt. costumes do show a lot of skin, she isn’t exactly showing any cleavage or anything too wild. I don’t really know how Shulk got through, but if I had to guess, it’s probably how sexualized males are typically considered less extreme than sexualized females. Yes, they could have POSSIBLY changed her outfit to make it more age-appropriate, but considering all the trouble they had to go through redesigning Palutena and Bayonetta in Smash 4 as well as the fact that Mai would only would have been a stage element, they might‘ve decided that she would be too much work for only a small cameo. ...Okay, that wasn’t quick at all, but I just wanted to get that off my chest. I have a friend who mains Terry. We quickly began to like Terry through the funny things my friend would say while playing as him. Terry often says "Burn Knuckle" during his front special, but my friend thought he was saying "Radical", so he recently started saying "That wasn't very radical of you" when he gets launched.
All of us in the group started using Terry's phrases for fun when we gathered in the games room at college. Every time Terry wins, everyone says "OK!" with him. We've also started saying "Are you OK?" a lot more often. One of the teachers asked where my friend was, and I just shouted "Are you OK?" down the hall. I got a faint "I'm OK!" from my friend who was in the storage room. He said he's going to start using "Buster Wolf" as a response to that.
When we had a little tournament at the end of the first term, he won as Terry. Everyone cheered, and we all shouted "OK!" at his victory. After he won, he was relieved and also looked a bit exhausted, but he said "I think we can all agree that Terry Bogard is indeed the King of Fighters!"

Yeah, I didn't know who Shulk was when I've seen a reveal trailer of him for Smash 4 so I've looked up his name on Google and found out what game he comes from. Yet, I have found him fun to play as after trying out for like an hour back in that Wii U game.

The problem with Hero is that they tried just a bit to hard to give them homages to their home series and ended up with a character that was kinda awkward and unbalanced (In terms of moveset, not tiers).

It's not limited to simply being relevant at the present, being important/relevant during Nintendo's history at all is more accurate. I don't own a console and have never played a Smash game. But as a King of Fighters (and Terry) fan, I love just how much heart is in this video, and how happy Sakurai is at being able to include Terry into the game with a so many cameos and music tracks from the SNK games. Mad props to him.

I just want to say something real quick about the whole “Smash is only for good boys and girls” thing: Sakurai didn’t actually say this in the original Japanese version.
As far as I know, he still joked about it, but he more clearly elaborated that putting Mai in the game would cause the CERO (the age rating system in Japan) to raise the age rating (CERO is infamously known for being very strict on what is or isn’t appropriate compared to other rating systems, if you didn’t know).
I completely understand that some people are only throwing this quote around as a joke, but I’ve seen a lot people who seem genuinely confused or think Sakurai is a hypocrite for not including Mai but including Bayonetta and her/Joker’s guns, as well as ZSS’s and Shulk’s alt. costumes when this is mostly an issue out of his control.
I’m assuming Bayo and Joker’s guns made it through due to the fact how unrealistic they are (no blood, for example) and while Bayo’s outfit is fairly sexual, she’s not exactly revealing much skin (and was HEAVILY toned down for her transition to Smash, a detail a lot of people seem to be forgetting). While a couple ZSS’s alt. costumes do show a lot of skin, she isn’t exactly showing any cleavage or anything too wild. I don’t really know how Shulk got through, but if I had to guess, it’s probably how sexualized males are typically considered less extreme than sexualized females.
Yes, they could have POSSIBLY changed her outfit to make it more age-appropriate, but considering all the trouble they had to go through redesigning Palutena and Bayonetta in Smash 4 as well as the fact that Mai would only would have been a stage element, they might‘ve decided that she would be too much work for only a small cameo.
...Okay, that wasn’t quick at all, but I just wanted to get that off my chest.
