The proper attention on these old sewing machine does the most critical aspect of setting up your machine without it your stitches will turn out horrible early be too tight or too loose and regardless your struggle to sew.
Thomas, this is THE BEST tutorial explaining how to thread and check tension on these old Kenmores. You not only explained it very clearly, you also showed excellent, clear video which us visual learners so desperately need. I just bought two Kenmore 158 series vintage machines and I haven't been able to sew on them because neither one came with a manual and no one on UA-cam could manage to explain getting it threaded in a way that I could understand. I sewed gazillions of items (clothing, linens, and curtains) for many decades on my grandmother’s Singer treadle sewing machine that she purchased around 1915. In 1998, it was lost in a fire.
Recently, someone gave me an old Kenmore zig-zag sewing machine Model 158-17501. I had no clue about adjusting the tension. Thank you. My husband bought my machine new back in 1974 for $300 which for a couple living on a $ 5,000 a year graduate school assistanceship was a huge amount of money. I have all the original parts and manual and have to say the machine is built like a Mack truck, but I was constantly in fear of the tension. But now I know what to look for. You are a Godsend and I thank you from the bottom of my heart. Now, I will have the courage to try sewing some doll clothes for my grandchildren.

Well What eact model Sewing machine do you have? Also What materials are you planning to sew? Lastly what thread do you pan to use?
Some Info the lighter the fabric the smaller the needle size and the heavier the fabric the larger the needle size. Often the thread you will be using for your sewing project can also determine the type of needle you choose.
Singer titanium machine needles are universal and fit all brands including singer, brother, kenmore and other quality sewing machines. Singer color-coded needles make it easy to select the proper needle and size.

Best tutorial ever! I have a Globe, which is basically a Kenmore American style..... Can't find a Globe manual anywhere. Lifesaver!!! ❤️ Picked up a great tip after struggling with threading the needle for years.... Moisten the eye of the needle, rather than the thread.... It really works!!! Yah, youtube 😍👍

I purchased the manual online a few years back and it does not say to bring the string all the way around the tension dial. This explains why it rarely works properly. Thank you so much

Turns out I had made the mistake at the tension disk that you point out here! My stitches are looking much better now! Thank you!! Took up sewing again after hadn’t sewn in many many years when the covid started. I took my mother in laws old Kenmore 1625 model. Thankfully she took good care of it and all the parts are still with it and the manual too. I’m just having a problem with the tension and hopefully this video helps. A lot has come back to me about sewing but still learning. Noticed the stitching on the underneath look looped. Your point about how important it is to thread made a lot of sense to me after I watched the video. I KNEW that but didn’t do it! DUH! Thank you and hopefully this works.
OMG Thank you, I wasn’t doing it right and thought my machine was broken lol!! Exactly what you mentioned as the problem I wasn’t putting the thread in the tensioner the right way I was resting it on the spring thing there And not threading it into that crevice as you mentioned! So my thread had no tension And the thread kept getting caught down in my machine under down in where the bottom thread gets pulled up!! I think your video is one of the best self help videos I’ve ever seen! I don’t have to get Rid of my machine now and we can actually use it yay!! Blessings

I'm grateful for the video... I hadn't done any sewing in years... just too busy... now I'm older... quite a bit older... and I had forgotten how to thread my sewing machine... I never learned properly how to set the tension on my machine.. it's always been by guess and by golly... One more hint... which might help folks with older eyes like mine... I couldn't see to thread the needle... and oh my it was a pain... then I googled and got some suggestions... putting a bit of hair spray on the thread tip and letting it dry is working... Eureka!
The best tip is to use a piece of white paper behind the needle. I like to use the end flaps of small boxes that small items are packaged in. These flaps are sturdy enough to stand on the presser foot and lean against the presser bar. Then with a small light,or flashlight coming from behind needle, you can see the eye easily..
Thank you! My manual didn't explain which side of the tab on the right of the tensioner that my thread should go so I was going in front of it (closer to me than to the machine). And OMG, was I STRUGGLING with poor tension! But after trying to follow several tutorial videos I finally found this one and you showed very clearly the one part that I was messing up. Now that I've got the tension problems solved I absolutely love my new (very old) Kenmore machine! When the tension was a problem I briefly (and enthusiastically) considered launching it from the roof of the tallest building in my city and going back to 100% hand sewing everything. But now that I know how to work with my machine I'm a lot happier with it and with the results I'm getting.

I have had this machine for many years & put it away because it kept bunching up, thread breaking, even needles breaking...I gave up! I decided today to give it another try & thanks to you I think I might like to start sewing 😚 I also found out why my needles probably broke...I wasn't setting my bobbin holder in correctly!

Wow, I was having trouble with the tension. I tightened the bobbin and voila! it’s working. I bought this older very heavy Kenmore that is clean and supposedly worked. Indeed it does sew beautifully. Thank-you so much!

Dido to Agnes comment! I have a Kenmore Model 85 machine which hasn't been used for years. I have cleaned and oiled the machine but struggled with threading and inserting the bobbin into the bobbin case (figured this out) correctly. Your video was excellent! I knew there was a missing step at the tensioner and your video explained the steps perfectly! I appreciate the extra info about the bobbin tension as well. I'm going to use different color threads to check the stitches. Thank you!!

Wow--our Goodwill stores would never sell a sewing machine that cheap. I picked up a 6 stitch Kenmore for around $15 (with my senior discount). I've had the Ultra Stitch 8 for 40 years and it has been a wonderful machine. Good luck with yours!

Though I finally discovered this on my own awhile back after I unearthed the original manual, you are right in that NOBODY explains this properly. I was having constant issues until I started doing it correctly. I like that you explain the bobbin tension as well. I thought fir the longest time I'd broken my machine. Which I may have if I'd kept going with the tension all wrong!

@@ThomasShue any advice for using a twin needle ? I’m finding that one of the top threads has good tension and creating a good stitch but the 2nd one is resulting in loops on the top side of the fabric. I have a kenmore 158.130
Not unsurprisingly but the thread that is causing the loops is the one that I have placed behind the tension disks (as directed in another video I watched) as opposed to the one I have placed inside the tension disk as you normally would .
I just purchased one of these machines with high hopes that I would learn to sew😆 but I have no idea what I’m doing. I think now I know how to thread thanks to you, now.. what’s next 😳

Thank you. No offense, but in my mind's eye I see a little old gray haired lady doing this. I'm surprised at the number of men doing these tutorials. I love it. I just bought my very first sewing machine because now that I'm middle aged nothing fits so I'm going to tailor my clothing. It's a Kenmore 12 stitch, I bought it at Goodwill for $10. I know how to press the pedal with my foot and guide the material that's it. So naturally I'm learning how to even put thread in it. I've already cleaned it up and oiled it so I'm ready to start learning. Thanks again!
Yep, that's it on that tensioner. You're correct, these machines show you how to thread them. I just wasn't sure about this tensioning disc. I didn't want to pull it all the way forward

Thank you for this video. I have seen others and learned from them but yours gave me even more information on threading the tension. I bought at 158 machine this year. There was no manual so I bought a reprint on line but the diagram showing how to thread the tension was not much help. I thought I had it right but will be re-threading the again to be sure. I learned to sew on a Kenmore 1756, and have never had a problem threading any machine without a manual, ever. Must be because I learned to engage that tension spring with attention.

@@ThomasShue Hi, well I just oiled my machine and it doesn't want to sew. It sews a couple of stitches and then it stops and when I press the peddle it makes a sound but won't keep going. Have to manually do it and then when I turn it, it sort of skips a stitch. Any help would be very appreciated. Thanks.

@@heidijsalgado I am sure you have figured problem by now but for others it sounds like belts may be slipping or loose. Sometimes oil has gotten on the belt, clean it off.
