The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

I saw dozens and dozens of Steve & Eydie shows and enjoyed every moment of every one of them. My husband toured with them for 10 years and I'd go with him whenever I could.
Behind the scenes they were funny, gracious, generous, and just top-notch performers.
This is the first time I've heard her sing this number. I'm still in awe. We all miss those days.

Steve and Eydie were passengers in my friend's yellow cab. He said they were the nicest, most gracious people he ever met.

Eydie looks gorgeous and her singing is flawless-that big powerful note in the middle! Love the arrangement on this rendition-reminds me of the Brasil 66 version! Great backdrop too.😃💜🎉🎵

Reminiscent of Lani Hall's vocal with the Sérgio Mendes cover version from a few years prior.

    • @zuperdee
      @zuperdee 7 місяців тому +2

Frankly, she’s a BETTER singer than Lani Hall. My ears absolutely cannot stand how Lani constantly sang flat in the Sergio Mendes version. The orchestral arrangement used here is clearly similar to the Sergio Mendes version, too.

Lani Hall's version with Brasil'66 was more melodic.

A good example of why Eydie Gorme was one of the best voices in North American popular music of the last century, she was able to sing almost whispering with her beautiful velvety voice and, instantly, with great naturalness, raise her voice making it flood every corner in the auditorium with her highest and most powerful notes... A true singer from head to toe!

For any other songwriter, this would be the greatest song they ever wrote. Or at least in the top 10. For Paul McCartney, this is about the 378th greatest song he ever wrote.

I'm trying to conceive of how they did that echo effect in 1970. That would have been pretty advanced stuff back then, involving tape recorders and some fancy manual mixing board moves.

I don't think John had much or anything to do with this song. Sinatra did the same with Something saying it was a Lennon/McCartney tune when he performed it in concert

Some of the covers of Beatles song (such as Ray Charles version of "Eleanor Rigby") were good.
But the majority of covers, especially by the "easy listening" artists were HORRID!!!!
I just hope on Friday (the actual anniversary), you show THE BEATLES performing, and NOT some horrid cover by, say, Sergio Franchi.

I just love how arrogant younger people are. Just because you don't like this doesn't mean it was bad, it just means you're not looking at it with the eyes of the time.

I’m 65, and I can say this is a bad interpretation, maybe a song by the Turtles or Fifth Dimension would have been more up Eddy’s alley. I love lounge music,
The Fofth Dimension, Bobby Darrin and the Association had it going on
