Anybody know when this was recorded? I saw El-Rayo X about 6 times and this is as good as the 2 best Mercuries they ever played (that I heard). The best overall was at the Fillmore after the Bhundu Boys tore the place up. Davey didn't want to be shown up by the opening act so he was running on all 16 cylinders that night. But the best Mercury opening was at New Georges in San Rafael when that slide intro was extra-extra abstract and extra long. Very therapeutic. This one is fairly structured in comparison. God Damn - I miss that band!
I have bootleg of ElRayoX at Laguna Seca speedway in CA where David played a long solo slide intro to Mercury Blues, wilder and crazier then the one here. I also saw them at a small club in MA in the mid eighties where the slide inttro was equal parts Amazing Grace, Will the Circ le Be Unbroken, and Dark Was the Night. For both shows, the solo saz or bouzouki intro to Hands Like a Man was beautiful, and the slide solo perhaps even better than the one for Mercury Blues which was the encore.

Holy heck, this is the best solo I've ever heard Lindley do on this, one of my favorite rock songs. Absolutely masterful work.
