  • There are many flash cartridge solutions that exist for use with your classic/retro consoles. But the BackBit Pro might just be the most useful I've come across as it is designed for not one...not two, but over 20 different classic games consoles and computers with development of more still on the way!

    Thanks for this!
    I have the BackBit Chip tester and love it.
    Never could figure out exactly how the BackBit worked. I was thinking $129 for each system and thought no way!!! But that price for the cartridge and then $19 for each system is a must have for me.

    The Backbit has been a little hidden gem for some years now. I originally purchase the "legacy" Backbit which was primarily for the C64/C128 but did have a VIC-20 adapter created for it. I was so amazed by the device's functionality that I had ordered a second one years back. Now the Pro model takes things to a completely new level with support for all of these game consoles.
    Support for these devices is stellar by the way. There have been a few times where a certain application I found would not work and with a simple PM to Evie they were resolved in no time at all. I can wholeheartedly recommend her products of which I have purchased a few now.

    I was like that looks like an Intellivision cartridge on the adapter you had installed at the start of the video.

      @IvoryTowerCollections  Рік тому

      It very could have been. At the time I made that video I owned the Intellivision, 5200, and Vic-20 adapters. I now also have the 7800 adapter as well and it has been quite handy to use this one cartridge and just swap out the ends to use between different consoles I'm servicing and testing. FW updates are quite frequent with this cartridge also as it is now on version 2.0x. So yeah...lots of updates and things get added or fixed as new adapters are added.

      It is a very cool multi purpose flash cartridge. It doesn't have all the bells and whistles of some others out there, but it has become an important tool on my work bench for testing and servicing different consoles since I only need the main body of the cartridge and then just pop on the adapter I need to use it. I also really like that I can use a single SD card to have all the ROM images I need for each system by having them in their own folders and further break them out with additional subfolders from there. And now with support for over 20 different systems I'm now just buying up the adapter needed for consoles I didn't already have flash cart solutions for.

      I actually now own adapters for the 7800, Atari 8-bit, Master System, Vic-20, Colecovision, Atari 5200, Apple II, and the Intellivision. Although it can be tricky trying to keep up with all the updates Evie releases LOL!

      Yes, it especially great for those that might be getting started in the retro gaming scene and might not yet have the different flash cartridges for the various systems already. I believe some of the systems that BackBit Pro supports might not even have flash cartridges available for them as well and so the BBPro is the only way currently to have such a device for those other systems.

    The hard reset uses the 12V line and cartridge interlock to reset the machine. The original 4 port does not have the 12V line, so you can either add that or route the internal reset line.

    Geez....there are so many ways to play retro games. Emulator programs/roms installed on computers. USB sticks with games and built in emulators, "Boxes" with games on them that you connect to a TV, cute lil reproductions that look like the original that you connect to a TV, cartridges full of games that plug into original consoles, and now a generic cartridge with an adapter that plug into original consoles.

    Why can't you just press the reset button on each system to get back to the game select screen like on the LTO Flash, Cuttle Cart 3 and Mega Ever Drive ?
    What do you mean by 4 port and 2 port Atari 5200?

    • @IvoryTowerCollections
      @IvoryTowerCollections  Рік тому

      There are 2 models of the 5200 console. First release has 4 controller ports along the front and features a different power setup for it. The later models only have 2 controller ports on the front and have other changes inside them compared to the 4 port units. The normal reset on the consoles will just reset the current game you have selected. So the button is required in order to reset back to the game selection menu. It has to do with how the BBPro loads itself up to be the game before the console is actually brought up. So to reset to menu, you press the button on the cartridge. If you just press reset on the console, it will only reset the game like normal but doesn't return you to the menu. Just a difference in how it works. And NOT all flash carts work this way. My MegaED X7 doesn't work properly because I always keep my 32x attached. So I have to power cycle my console for that to work. I basically don't have any on board menu options because I keep the 32x attached. The other main 5200 flash cartridge doesn't have any buttons on it and requires you to power cycle the 5200 each time to change games. Same thing with the 2600 flash cartridges. Although the 2600 adapter on the BBPro, the button on it will reset back to game select menu.

    Very cool! Still haven't bought one yet, but I'm really thinking I should though. 👍 Also been thinking about getting a 5200.. Would you recommend this over the Atarimax? I already have LTO for Inty and a Atarimax SD for CV, but I'd probably get the BackBit adapters for those systems too, just for the heck of it. I see the Vectrex will be a future option too (it's available for preorder). 😎 Sadly everythings hemmed up due to chip shortages. :/

    • @IvoryTowerCollections
      @IvoryTowerCollections  Рік тому +1

      Well, the AtariMax still has the ability to play some larger size bankswitched games and demos that the BackBit doesn't. If you look in the video, you will see that the Bad Apple demo is also in my 5200 folder but it is colored differently and that is because the cart doesn't support it as it doesn't feature the streaming ability to load the data off the SD card like the AtariMax can. Not sure if that is something to be added in the future or not. I also need to test if the MULE conversion works with this.
      I also saw that she released the Vectrex and the Atari 7800 adapters for pre-order this morning. I did order the 7800 adapter but didn't see a need for the Vectrex one for me yet since I've got several multicarts and both a Vec-Multi and VecFever carts.

      @@IvoryTowerCollections ah, I see.. Thanks for the reply! Sounds like I should probably get the Atarimax for the 5200 then.👍
      I still plan on getting a BackBit and adapters for all my different systems eventually, maybe later this year when they're back in stock and more features are added. Didn't know about the 7800 adapter.. I'll definitely check that out!
      Vectrex wise, I think we're set.. Nothing tops the Vecfever. 😎

    • @IvoryTowerCollections

      Not sure I understand your question? But if you order the backbit from Evie's website, it includes one adapter that you choose and if you choose the Intellivision adapter then yes, that adapter plus the backbit and a microSD card with some ROMs of the games and you can be up and playing.

    • @IvoryTowerCollections
      @IvoryTowerCollections  Рік тому

      There is a 7800 adapter now for the BackBit Pro, but at the time of this video being made that adapter didn't exist yet so I was only able to show the Intellivision and 5200 adapters. I now own adapters for the Colecovision, Ti-99, Vic-20, and Atari 8-bit computers, and Sega Master System. Still a wonderful all arounder flash cart.

      @@rustymixer2886 Yes you do put the ROMs for each system into their own folder and can create additional subfolders into those for further cataloging. As an example I an Intellivision folder that has most of those systems games or programs I want in one folder.
