  • Just received my 7800 adapter for my BBpro flash cartridge and decided to give the pokey audio a quick test using ball blazer and commando.

    Thank you for the video. I am thinking of getting one of these. How is the compatibility? Or should I wait until GD is back in stock?

      With the current FW updates that have been provided on the BBPro. It is able to play all of the official released games minus Choplifter and quite a few of the homebrew releases from the past few years. But newer homebrews that use newer pokey addressing etc. aren't compatible at this time. So it really depends on what you are wanting to play. If you want everything ever programmed for the 7800 now and in the future, then the 7800GD is more likely to suit your needs. I've got both and still tend to use my BBPro for most stuff as it just works for most of what I need it for.

    Do you have volume issues with the Pokey and AV mods or does the backbit take care of that?

      The way I wire up the Pokey and TIA on the 7800s I do, is replicating the original mixing that was one on the 7800 console. Basically using a second set of resistors of the same value as the ones on the main board and using a capacitor on the end of those for last min filtering. So no... I don't typically have volume issues with pokey and TIA on my systems. The BackBit's pokey emulation is similar in volume output to that of an actual pokey so provided normal pokey games play okay on your system, then the BBPro 7800 adapter should sound about the same in volume. My cartridges that have HOKEY replacements in them are the only ones that give me volume output issues, but the creator of the Concerto is addressing that with volume adjustments being added to the newest version of the cartridge and upcoming adapters for it.

    Hi - I have an issue booting up - I get a gray screen - I do have a video mod installed but read in the comments that should not be the issue - Evie mentioned that I may need a modern power supply or need to hook up the reset cable but it is not clear how to do that - any pointers you can share? Thanks

      never mind - the orientation was wrong on the cart - it was not clear which was the correct way - I did not need the reset

      Glad you got it sorted, the easiest way to remember how the cart goes in, is that the BackBit logo of the actual main cart body should always be facing towards you. At least that is how it is on the Atari systems. Since the adapters are keyed they can only go in one way so that is how I remember. The reset wire is only needed so that you can press the button on the top to return back to the game select menu vs power cycling the console. On earlier FW I was able to do this on a few 7800s I have here for testing without the wire being needed, but now it is pretty much required for that button back to menu to work. BTW the way that works is that the adapter included a section of wire with a dupont male pin on one end a quick clip lead on the other. The clip lead goes on the 4013 chip inside the console, I believe it is pin 13 and the male dupont end plugs into the female connection on the back of the adapter. Routing that wire through the console to do this is the biggest issue but I've a feeling that most of Evie's consoles don't actually have their top shells installed LOL!

      @@IvoryTowerCollections Ah yes thanks for the reply - and I also figured that out (regarding the clip) - even though Evie pointed me to doc - the doc did not show those steps with the clip and the dupont connector - it is not entirely difficult to figure out - but I never saw one of those push button clips before lol - I assume she was too busy to point it out like you just did and therefore made some assumptions in her doc. Also - I sent Evie a message - regarding 2 button hacks and homebrew ROMS that use a Genesis control pad - It seems on my 7800 I can't use the genesis control pad on the Backbit menu to select and start ROMS - I have to start the game with a 2600 controller and then swap to the genesis controller to use the 2 button game - and it works as expected like on my 2600 (UNO CART) - ALSO I found on my system that an OEM 7800 2 button joystick will allow you to navigate the BackBit menu and select a ROM - but then the fire buttons don't work in the game. (i tried this with a Robotron 2084 ROM) I am not sure if this was a bad ROM or not - but when I swapped the joystick for a 2600 1 button joystick I was able to fire and use the button - so - few things I am finding out that I am not sure are by design or require firmware updates etc. I would assume a 7800 SD cart (adapter) should work with the native 7800 2 button controller. Thanks for your help - always enjoy your content.

      You should click on the About me section and shoot me an email on this. Because YES standard 7800 controllers will work or should work just fine on the BBPro as I use mine in the lab to service 7800s all the time and use a NES style 7800 controller as well. So yes, again, a standard 2 button 7800 controller should work on the BBPro menu without issue. I'm thinking you have an actual issue with your 7800 to blame. I just ran into a similar issue like this recently that I got corrected and it wasn't the BBPro or controller, it was the console.

    Where did you get that crazy looking 7800??

    • @IvoryTowerCollections
      @IvoryTowerCollections  Рік тому

      It is a normal 7800 but housed in a 3D printed shell that was made and sent to me. This is my lab unit 7800 that has a UAV installed but still has working RF and stock BIOS installed.

    My adapter doesnt boot, I just get 2 lines on my screen. Im thinking its because it has the svideo mod.

    • @IvoryTowerCollections
      @IvoryTowerCollections  Рік тому +1

      I don't think an s-video upgrade has anything to do with it. I have a UAV installed in the one in the video and in fact it is s-video being shown on that LCD. Did you connect the reset wire that has to be attached within the inside of the console and then routed back and plugged into the adapter? My adapter won't boot without that reset wire attached.

      @@IvoryTowerCollections thats my problem lol, Evie just did an update and I can boot now and play a couple games without the reset cable.

    • @IvoryTowerCollections
      @IvoryTowerCollections  Рік тому

      Sadly the updates have not worked for me and my adapter will only give me a black screen unless I have that reset cable in place. It appears that 7800s with modified BIOS installed like mine in the video and another I have with one of Asteroids built in modified BIOS, will not work without that reset wire still. Evie is still looking into it but I think I'm going to have reverse one of my 7800s with the modified BIOS back to a stock BIOS to test and confirm this.
