Modern secret hidden safe room

  • This is a fairly unique custom installation, conceived by the owner, then designed and built in-house at AT Custom Cabinets(818)347-0740 in Canoga Park California. From the outside it appears to be a linen closet with adjustable shelves and typical amenity and function. It opens up to reveal a secret area where anything from a safe can be stored, or it could even be used as a hiding place if necessary. This home is very exclusive, and has already been rented to high profile celebrity, etc...who were never made aware of it and didnt figure it out despite living there for sometimes several months. Anyway, its pretty stealth, and was alot of fun testing the concept and mocking it up, and eventually building and installing it. Leave some comments, I'd love to hear what you guys think.

    I actually meant "safe room" to imply it was for hiding a safe, not because it was for safety from invaders. As you can see, its easy to get in and out of. You could hide in it temporarily, its only safety being that its not easily detectable. Thanks for the comment.

    It's been said many times before that the paint is off color in the swinging cabinet, surely with 220k views the comments based on this observation have become randomly routine.
    it's probably not the last time ill have to say this but.....
    Directly above the cabinets in this particular area is a dome skylight. The skylight is tinted for UV and to reduce glare. The paint is simply reflecting the darker tint of the skylight than the rest of the cabinets, and typically only at certain times of the day. The finish is only a few days old at this point, and is a high end lacquer base with a very durable pre-catalyzed satin clear coat. Every cabinet is the exact same color, trust me. Otherwise thanks for watching, I will have a follow up video within a few weeks for those interested in the details I hope to share a video that well answer ask your questions.

    BTW to everyone asking for the plans...I was lead to believe the shop drawings would be provided to me, then the boss had a change of heart....sorry about that. I can do the drawings myself but it may take a bit of time so if you really want them, please e mail me jcookeconstruction@Yahoo.com with a specific request. For my trouble I ask a small donation as it is a complicated draw and I may make a few changes for a more user friendly install...based on the trouble this installation gave me im sure you will appreciate it. Thanks

    I would live to see how the hinge works. This is exactly what I want to build but haven't figured out a hidden hinge.

  • @mithallogee
    @mithallogee  11 років тому

    Thanks Nino! Though it easily closed from the inside with a tug on the (inside) right side, I added a handle later. It required a fair amount of beefing up the hinges once the client had a chance to load it up with linens and towels! Lol...the shop mock up didn't show us how weight would affect it...I would do it differently if I did it again, but only from a hinging standpoint

    There is a mansion in DC with 70 hidden doors. Rarely do people find more than 8 their first time through it. I have a secret door in my old house. The buyer of the house doesn't know it's there and he has been in the house for 5 years. One day I may show him.

    It's a really great idea. I would rather have a storm shelter in the same place. If it's storm proof it's also a safe room from thieves. If your safe room can withstand a tornado it can withstand a person from getting to you before the police can arrive. A siren mounted outside will be a plus with a panic button mounted inside the safe room. Make sure you have a antenna connected to your safe room for transmission. All in all your idea is wonderful. It's better than what most people have. Great idea! I'd rather have your safe room than nothing at all. And as to the people who are saying that your shelves are small has nothing to do with anything. I'm sure you will put things in the shelves. Who would leave them empty? I'm sure at this time the shelves have something in them.

  • @mithallogee
    @mithallogee  11 років тому

    It opened and closed easily at the time without one because its built light, fully loaded different story. In the interest of keeping your hands off the finish I definitely agree. I ended up adding a handle later, for both reasons. Thanks for commenting, aaaand for being pretty hot!

    That sounds much trickier than this is, no custom fabricated levers and guides...the trick is to make it light, yet sturdy enough to bear load and still function with 1/4" inch clearances and yet only be hinged on one corner, thanks for the comment!

    As I sit here pondering dee-eeeeply about some of the comments made over the past 5 years that this video has been posted, and seeing how youtube has become a go to source for diy projects, real hands on solutions and inspiration for everything imaginable, recorded by individuals with incredible talent, sometimes for fame or fortune, but usually because it's a platform where anybody can become a source of information for the masses, like myself, I provided a video of a functional secret closet, the inspiration for creating it was to cover a design flaw. the video got 875K views over 5 years...I never expected that! I appreciate everyone who liked it, those who expressed interest in building plans for it, and even the ones who had critical things to say. the one that continues to bother me is the one where I shouldn't have shown it because now everyone knows it's there... ridiculous is the first word that comes to mind, as if I care if someone could find it is my second thought, and lastly, what would youtube be.... if the people who design, create, build and record their abilities, skills, tricks, trades, thoughts, and solutions, decided they would rather keep all that to themselves, and you jackass people that can't just learn from what you see instead of pointing out every mistake or paranoid scenario driven remark. I give zero fucks for those people. in times like these it's important to remember that critical remarks, especially the "baiting" kind of remarks, are designed to dumb down the masses by clogging the mind with relentless stupidity... so go ahead and make more retarded comments, as you can see I'm chiming in 3 years later in some cases to respond with a hearty fuck you, and a reminder to anyone else who has the attention span to read this far, congratulations to you people, hopefully you can agree that the haters should be strung up in a desert and eaten from the feet up by coyotes.... enjoy the video I promise to try harder on the production value next time I have a neat project like that.

    Jason, do you have plans? Blueprints? Also, is it possible to put a handle on the back of the shelving so you can close it from inside? I notice you have to manipulate the side molding to close the safe room / cabinet. Is that something that can be done from inside? It would be a great place for a child to hide from intruder, or an adult to find a gun and ammo and wait for help to arrive or wait for a chance to take on the intruders. All in all a great set up

    • @mithallogee
      @mithallogee  10 років тому +1

      Sorry Dan, this was more a scribbling on napkins approach. However a sufficient amount of people have requested the plans, so I will request that a copy of any lead up dimensions and shop drawings available be released asap. No manipulation is required to open or close the door, and even without a handle it was quite easy to close the door from the inside and reopen it to exit. A handle was added anyway but the point is primarily that because of the relatively low tech catches we used(tight clearance didn't allow much option)I found the best way to open it was to open the outer door first and use the door leverage to "break" the catches, as it seemed to want to open from the top anyway. The motion is slight but if you watch you'll see what I mean. Stay tuned for more info

    That was awesome I would want much bigger room back but their great concept. If I were a celebrity I would want to hide some valuables in there maybe but not narcotics lol. Remember those dudes that just kicked in that one celeb's door and stole sheet from her. I suppose there's some sort of thing to keep the door closed once ur inside and ur safe? Like a 2x6. Also, I wonder if an HDE Non-Contact Infrared Thermometer Digital Temperature Gun can see if someone is in there or could see the heat loss in the space. An expert criminal would look for these types of cryptic spaces.

    2 questions.
    Is there a light in there?
    And when you knocked that shelf up at 00:17, then back down, was that part of the unlocking process? it would seem far too elaborate, but I wonder why you hit the shelf like that? You had been softly, softly till that point - really making an effort to close the doors gently, so maybe this was you breaking out, if you like.
