  • How can you see a broad cross-section of Federal era rooms without crisscrossing the country? Go to Winterthur. It is the Du Pont family home where almost 100 years ago, H. F. Du Pont started collecting American rooms from all over the country.
There is no other place like Winterthur if you want to see authentic period rooms. This starts a whole new series of historic rooms. Seeing and understanding these spaces will help you with design and restoration and new building.

The more of Winterthur you reveal, the more amazed I am at the skills of the architects, builders, and tradespeople who designed the shells, disassembled, reassembled, and installed this collection of rooms. All in what sounds to be a relatively short period of time. Thanks for the tours.

Years ago I learned from you how to restore my two hundred year old windows and I did with excellent results. Way better than replacement windows. Thank you for educating us about our responsibility for maintaining the integrity of an historical building. Now , on to the trim…

Love the videos and the info provided. I can’t believe I have not found these before now…I’m seeing that many have been on UA-cam for a while now. These videos and the info are helping me to better understand what to do to my 200+ year old house that ended up being redone in the 1950s in the 1950s style.

Great work Brent! Thank you for sharing all of the insight. I recently had a house built and you are one of the sources I relied heavily upon. The house came out awesome and is the talk of the neighborhood. Modern Prairie Style.

If ever in Newport, RI you should stay at the Francis Malbone House. Would love to hear your thoughts on the property.

Makes me want to break out the miter saw and start working on some moldings for my house. Not sure if I'm skilled enough to do it any justice though. lol

The blue room door header is that a solid piece or moldings stacked on top of each other and cut and miter to perfection?

My thought about this is that any building could have its personality changed with some architectural details.

Are these rooms you've been showing in these Winterthur videos the same ones you highlight in your book?

There are roughly 40 rooms in the Traditional American Rooms book.
