Old soul today must in my opinion must use modern up to date systems and air tightness standards. It's widely accepted that the health benefits of a tight home are paramount. Modern kitchens, food storage, lighting, plumbing, HVAC, and insullation cannot be reduced/compromised for astestic reasons. I love you show it's so informative of the past when craftmanship was present in most builds. Thanks Ray

I love this education. Everyone is doing boring white, plain, bathrooms that all look exactly the same, and will be incredibly dated in 10 years. Loving the encouragement to use materials that aren't the popular ones.

No kidding. A while ago I was served an ad online for a bathroom remodeling company. The "before" picture was a riot of fun colors. The "after" picture was a shade of gray. Yuck!

Hi Brent, great video! In addition to the advances made over the last 125 years in bringing fresh water into the house are the equally important advances made in removing waste from the house (some of which actually go further back in time to around the 1840’s). I recall watching an episode of the British TV series Victoria and they showed Prince Albert, the husband of Queen Victoria, having a flush toilet installed in Buckingham Palace in the 1840’s for the servants who all gathered round to learn how this modern marvel worked.
Also in Victorian England, when the first underground waste removal systems were built (probably in the 1840’s), the construction of the brick tunnels were so beautiful that members of the upper classes paid money to be taken on tours of the sewer system. On either side of the trench where the waste water ran there were wide brick walkways and the operators of the sewer system had wooden platforms built that spanned the trench and rolled along on wheels.
On top of the platform they built theatre style seating and the society people sat in the seats and then a horse walked on either side of the trench and pulled the platform along. At the time the priority for building the sewer system was to try and stop the spread of cholera but of course once the Palace had a flush toilet installed then all the members of the upper class had to have one and the practice took off from there.

Interesting history. I hope to go with a heat pump water tank and move away from gas, thanks. I'd consider tankless electric as in other parts of the world but America's 220v ain't enough for that to be practical here.

Heat pump type water heaters (with a storage tank) are radically more efficient than tankless water heaters, and they don't have the massive peak energy demand a tankless heater does. The time for tankless has come and gone in most applications.

In the first few minutes, you touched on a topic that has bugged me looking at the prevalence of freestanding tubs now - hard to clean around them. I think this trend will fizzle out before long..

I don't know what's going on, but ever since your attic insulation video (that I watched twice) YT just stopped putting you on my home page. I just noticed this video and realized I had missed a bunch of content. I know the recommendation is always "ring the bell", but I have over 1000 channels that I'm subbed to, so I think cutting the fat there might be a better option.
    Keep on buildin!

I was in an 1890s mansion that had the larger hexagonal floor tile in the bathrooms which was orignal to the house.

At least up here in the north I dare say that the plumbing of early fixtures was exposed not as a show of wealth, but to keep them warm enough so they wouldn't freeze and split open in the winter

I think Kristof Irwin might take issue with Brent's claims that tankless units are more efficient than and deliver hot water faster than units with a tank.
First, there's no such thing as a heat pump tankless water heater, so you're never getting a tankless unit with CoP >1.
Second, the delivery time is all in the lines. For the most part, the choice of unit will have no impact on delivery time, but many tankless units are incompatible with recirculating loops, so there's less potential to improve delivery time via recirc.

13:07 that floor tile irritates my OCD - not the use of square, hex, and round, but that the pattern isn't uniform - ie; the xoxo pattern in the end squares have been rotated 90°, and there are 3 _and a half_ hex patterns in the center. 🤪

Why would you build houses that look dated.... I can tell you, you're only attracting buyers that don't have the means to buy these houses anyway.
