Lukather (and Toto) were definitely the unsung heros of rock n roll. People ask "Who's Toto?" Then you start singing Rosanna or Hold the Line and they are like "Oh that's Toto?!! Lukather is one of my top 3 favorite guitarist along with Jimmy Page and Eddie Van Halen. I never realized what an incredible guitarist he was until I tried to start learning some of his licks.
Met him very briefly in DC about two weeks ago. He seemed surprised my gf and I recognized him. Umm, you're Steve Lukather, bro lol. Granted we only talked to him for like 90 seconds, but he seemed like a really nice dude.
I thought that was a great tune. I'm not even sure I knew it was a Toto tune at the time and I even lived in LA at the time. In North Hollywood, in Steve's old hood.
@@eccrawford7759 I played in a band with a bass player who was in a band with Michael McDonald way back when and he said one night a club owner told the other band members that they should not let that keyboard player sing...
@@ghostownaproach yeah I was a BIG Doobie Brothers fan in the 70's (In fact they were my very first concert when they opened for 3 Dog Night), but when McDonald joined them, that was the end of the Doobies for me. He totally ruined their sound. Ironically I saw the Doobies a year ago with Johnston and Simmons and they sounded amazingly good for how old they are. Few bands can pull off sounding as good as they were in their prime, but to my surprise they put on a great show.
I have been fortunate meet and chat with Luke several times, once was planned at a Toto meet and greet. The other two were totally by chance in and around elevators in the hotels we were staying at. It kinda blew my mind when my wife and I stepped into the elevator and there's Luke. He was very nice, when I mentioned to him I really enjoyed them performing Better World live. That was a nice way to start the morning.
Thank you Joe, for posting this video of Luke! I think he is terrific!! Love his singing and of course his playing. To me, not a better musician out there. Please post more with Luke!!
I thank my lucky stars that i was a teen and in my 20's during the 70's - 80's! So much talent and great musicians, writers, back up vocals, keyboards was so awesome too.
Modern social media trends make MTV look harmless in regards to pushing superficial music and art. It has some amazing upsides, but like everything else in life there's two sides to every coin.... Love this channel, love the interviews, and it's wonderful to see the less visible parts of music history get highlighted like this.
Mr Joe, if I ever get my wheels rolling south out of Kentucky, I know where I'll be stopping to visit..Steve is a great guitarist. Also when Mtv started I was still a kid, but I knew that Mtv was suppressive of the real rock raw edge that I like. Some bands became elevator music. Thanks
One of the most underrated bands of all time. Toto's music videos...made in the late 70's....( Hydra, St. George and the dragon, All us boys, Good bye Elenor) were long before MTV. Unfortunately people like simple, easy to digest " music" ( if you can call it that😞) Toto's music will stand the test of time!
One of the most talented guys to ever make music. Like a one man Holland Dozier Holland, he's on everything and he made anything he played on better! How weird is it that he would connect with so many other savant level players and find a magic sound of their own in Toto? They don't make them like this anymore. You have to have zero distractions as a kid to get to his level in your youth. No cable, no video games, just writing and playing all the time.
Luke is so humble. He under-rates everything he does. Case in point, his autobiography (The Gospel According to Luke) that took ages for him to even do, and only then when someone told him he had to release one. And it's a killer read. Now he's bringing out The New Testament. Haha! I hope he will bring out more though, he could fill many books.
I been Investigating he did... and so did Todd Rundgren. Steve played on The completion backwards principal album....song was... (Talk to you later). Thanx for your response
@On the 1 SL is a co-writer on Talk to Ya Later and plays guitar and bass on it. There are quite a few articles on this. I read some interview with him where he said that some of the band members were annoyed that Fee Waybill, David Foster and SL whipped it out so quickly that they didn’t get to have a say in it. And that’s how SL ended up playing bass as well as guitar. He was pulled in to the project by Foster. I love that song and his performance! Also I believe he co-wrote and performed on She’s a Beauty
i think MTV help to expose talented artists with great music ,and help to exposed untalented and overated artists, because 14 yr old teens that are their fans ,dont know too much about music , they just like them cause those artists are young and cute..
I WANT MY MTV IN STEREO !!!!!! 1981 - 1996 ? The first 15 years , THEN stupid REAlity shows ruined it. Sorry Steve, a TOTO video wasn't played during Day 1 . MTV Video # 4 - The Who you better you bet
At 1:32 I have to say that I HATED GEORGY PORGY! For obvious reasons.... And that song came out when I was in Elementary school too and those kids were relentless.. Thank God Toto redeemed themselves with Hold The Line shortly after that... Also the PTSD's caused by Georgy Porgy have gotten better with the help of my therapist... Lol.. Just kidding, It was pretty bad but not therapy bad

You could talk to Mr. Lukather weekly or daily, the stories are priceless. Thank you!!
Met Steve once. He is very good to fans . As long as you are respectful he has a lot of time for people.
He really is a down to earth guy. EZ to talk to, my only mistake, was to ask "could we jam sometime?"
@@howardjohny Well all the elite players are busy but money talks so offer them $1000 for an hour and you can have your jam.

"I'll Be Over You" by Steve is my favorite Toto song. Great voice, lyrics, guitar, and I related to its sentiment. Still have the 45.
I thought that was a great tune. I'm not even sure I knew it was a Toto tune at the time and I even lived in LA at the time. In North Hollywood, in Steve's old hood.
I liked that song a lot until Michael McDonald started singing the backing vocals towards the end.

Toto should be inducted in the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame too.

One of the most insightful, honest and articulate (and hilarious!) musicians on the planet.

Any Lukather is good Lukather. Thanks for the post
So much respect and recognition needs to go to these guys.

To me 99 is the girl from Get Smart. And Hungate’s bass solo is my favorite bass solo of all time. So musical and beautifull.
Luke cracks me up! He's such a great guy! Thanks for another video!
Best comment I've ever heard Joe, Elvis never did get old. And people love him today probably more so.

Make Believe is one of my favorites, should have got more air play. I mean come on, some songs they played constantly back then were terrible.

The statement may have been better as "after Elvis had been rode hard and put away wet by drug abuse, people still went to see him".
now he has to do it twice....
It was all good until the Patsy Cline comment. Ouch.
