This man gave me the most unbelievable gift when it comes to Human Nature. Fantastic interview.
I’m so happy that those chain of events happened bcz I absolutely love human nature and the story behind it
I'm happy you enjoyed the interview. Thanks!
Such a perfect, beautiful song.
@@nef.spring honestly
Human Nature is beyond beautiful composed. Enjoy. Thank you, Steve Porcaro. I consider Human Nature to be one of the most beautiful songs. Here's a marvelous jazzy version of it. Enjoy and keep creating beauty. ua-cam.com/video/3oxjjPcjibo/v-deo.html
Human Nature is one of the greatest Modern Jazz/ R&B songs ever recorded.
Agreed!
I totally agree
💯 True
kawasaki whip two, I totally agree with you, indeed Human Nature is one the greatest songs ever recorded. Have a great day and enjoy. ua-cam.com/video/3oxjjPcjibo/v-deo.html
Factual
Wow he wrote human nature and Africa? This guy is a musical genius!
No. David Paich wrote Africa, not Steve.
His brother, Jeff Porcaro, and David Paich actually wrote "Africa". But, Steve and David crafted a LOT of Toto IV, together.
@@RaincloudmusicTFS6 Thanks for the info

Yes David Paich wrote Africa and Rosanna.Steve was the synth and keyboard player for Toto. His solo on Africa is amazing and he dated Rosanna Arquette at the time which inspired the song Rosanna....
By far, for me, the greatest ballad that MJ ever recorded. It's just hypnotizing!
Lady of my life
Hypnotizing it is! Thank you for your comment. Have a beautiful day. ua-cam.com/video/3oxjjPcjibo/v-deo.html
I can’t help it
I prefer man in the mirror
Human Nature by Michael Jackson has truly stood the test of time to the point that musicians from other musical genres created their own versions of the iconic song. It has to be one of the grandest of compliments for Steve Porcaro.
MJ loved that song Human Nature and love too sing it. Mjj forever.
Yeah, and the credit for it being on Thriller goes to MICHAEL🤴🏽 Jackson because He insisted that it be on the album.

As a child I went to sleep to human nature every single night I get my lil radio pop in the tape n drift away to the Melodies the synth n MJs voice of course MR Steve u sir r a musical genius n thank you for this song
One of MJ's absolute best. Also Miles Davis did his beautiful version. A classic. All because it was left on a cassette in haste. Who would of thought?
It's beyond stellar, drumsNstuff79. Heavenly music. Celestial. Divine. I'm always glad when other talented musicians are interpreting Human Nature like this one here: ua-cam.com/video/3oxjjPcjibo/v-deo.html
Steve is so humble. He has done so much in the music industry. He can write great songs. He is a a synthesist of synthesists. Yet he doesn't draw attention to himself. His famous brothers and father largely overshadow him, but don't be fooled, he is amazing in his own right.
I'm eternally grateful to Mr. Steve Porcaro for writing this song that I've felt was written just for me ever since I've been alive. Human Nature just speaks to my soul and am so grateful for him sharing his genius and gifts with the world. Michael was the perfect person to execute this song. From my heart, thank you so much!
Human Nature is one of my faves👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Mine too, philosophia. It is celestial, stellar and interstellar music of the highest spheres. Magnificent song. Recently I found this version which I like tremendously. Enjoy. ua-cam.com/video/3oxjjPcjibo/v-deo.html
Lol these comments are in shambles. To the ppl arguing in comments, MJ wrote the majority of his hits. There are plenty of his early demos on UA-cam, some of them are him beatboxing every instrument way before Quincy or anyone else heard them - absurdly impressive stuff. BUT he often enlisted producers and experienced instrumentalists to manifest and perfect those concepts for songs into polished and complete recordings. Other than that, Michael sang plenty of songs from other songwriters throughout his career. So he did both. It’s not an either or argument. And it’s not that deep. ❤️
Except Rod Temperton. :-)
@@creativesource3514 what do you mean? I comment says, “MJ sang plenty of songs from other songwriters.”
@@thefreshlab He is genius performer. He is an ok song writer and definitely wrote a few good ones. But I like the songs he sang written by others.
@@creativesource3514 so you don’t like Don’t Stop Til You Get Enough, Beat It, Billie Jean, Smooth Criminal, Dirty Diana, etc? Gooootcha 😏
@@thefreshlab of course I do. I don't like much more past the Bad album. I've seen MJ several times in concert in London. I'm a big fan of course.
But my ears are tuned to his soul funk side. For instance I adore ' Can't Help it' by Stevie Wonder! I adore ' This Place Hotel' which he sang with his brothers. Of course I love the Thriller and Bad album. But I rate Prince far ahead of Jackson as a song writer.
Does this guy do ANY research on the people he interviews ? Steve was very polite. Total class.
Maybe we could ask him about his estrangement with Steve Lukather. WTH happened there?
@@Arturo-sm1tb ?
Everyone should also check out the track he did for Michael called "For All Time"
It is the spiritual successor to Human Nature.
Steve is so humble
He was working on Human nature the same time as his band was working on Africa, two legendary, Iconic songs.

Listening to Steve talk about music and Toto is a breath of fresh air. Listening to Steve Lukather rant about politics and what not is a drag

Thanks so much! I’ll be back early January with a really fun lineup of guests.
Beautiful!!!!!!!
God bless you Sir. Absolutely my favourite MJ song
Thx much
The interviewer did a great job! Almost feels like asking questions that you would ask only in person. Nothing too predictable or soft.
I love his inside scoop. It was honest and you can see the heartbeat of this track!
Man Toto was a force on the thriller album, I know that Steve lukather, the guitarist for toto, came up with the rhythm for Beat it! EVH obviously did the iconic solo.
No MJ already had all the main elements down in the demo.
Beat it was written by MJ. Quincy has said that when making the Thriller album he thought they had to have a rock song in the album and MJ said he had a song he had been working on at his home studio and then he brought in the demo he wrote and that's how Beat it came about.
Yes, but Steve lukather, the guitar player for Toto came up with the rhythm for it. He’s credited on the album for it, if he doesn’t do that the song sounds completely different. Search…..beat it/Steve lukather. There’s an interview with him where he explains it.
@@Andy-kw5nw not exactly. Steve said that Eddie did the solo and then somehow the tape recording was cut and they couldn't put two parts together so they had to re-do the song based based on what they could make up from the material they could use. So what they wrote (2-3 people worked to correct the mistake) was pretty similar to the original but with some changes. Then Q and MJ liked. But Steve wrote part of The girl is mine song.
I gotta hear those demo’s. Awesome stuff fellas.
They are great! You can find them on UA-cam.
Such a legendary story......

Best song MJ ever died, hands down. Give this song writer his due, he delivered us the very best of Jackson.
Nice interview. I never knew the backstory of "Human Nature" before today. I wonder if Steve would remember the original lyrics he wrote before the rewrite?
This was great 👍
Thanks!
one of my favourite cuts on Thriller! Along with Baby be mine and PYT which didn't get the exposure that beat it and Billie Jean did! Steve has written some great tunes! Taking it back and Its a feeling are awesome!
Human Nature is my favorite by far, but PYT and Baby Be Mine are definitely still absolute classics. And I honestly don’t mind that Billie Jean and Beat It became the main hits because in many ways they deserve it. Thanks for checking out my channel!
what’s pyt
I dont care if i ever hear BILLIE JEAN again. Burned out on that track early on. Now PYT and WANNA BE STARTIN SOMETHING never get old always get me going.
Steve Porcaro's The little things is even more amazing if you hear it.
It's funny because as I was young, about 11, I loved that song among the others
//: Human Nature is an awesome peace of work.
it would have been cool had Toto done it, but what an amazing track that was with Michael. And all the great covers over the years, Miles Davis played that a lot in shows. Pretty awesome.
I went and listened to the demo, and yup it’s pretty much the Human Nature we’ve all heard. Seems like a humble guy and what an amazing accomplishment to write a song on Thriller.
I do find the claim that he included the song on the tape by accident a little hard to believe, though!
Your last sentence is inaccurate. That is what everyone would like to hear but that is not at all what he describes here. That should be sufficient and close the 'debate'. At the time, we all used the other side of a cassette when runnning out of them, or reused an already recorded one and put something else on it. Questioning again his honesty and frankness - which he EMPHASIZES in this interview - would not be respectful.
@@fredericlinden how is it inaccurate?

Just a timeless and brilliant pop song that Q created from Steve's inspired rough draft and those perfect lyrics. Great story.
And almost forgot MJ... he made Thriller, the best album of all time, hands down.
Oh this guy cowrote Chicago 1945 with MJ..
And i think he wrote Carousel as well..
Rod Temperton of HeatWave - - The songwriter contributing to Quincy Jones and also the biggest selling Michael Jackson hits.
Michael Jackson wrote most of his own hits.
Michael wrote Don't Stop Til You Get Enough, Billie Jean, Beat It, Wanna Be Starting Something, Bad, The Way You Make Me Feel, Dirty Diana, Black Or White, Who Is It that I can remember. That's quite a few. Temperton wrote a few too, but not the majority
@@batoullamouri3699 incorrect. He wrote the minority of his songs.
@@avace917 Rod wrote the best tracks. He was fierce when he wrote for Heatwave.
@@creativesource3514 false. He wrote 11 songs off of bad, most songs on dangerous, history and invincible. He also wrote Beat it, and Billie Jean, amongst other songs from Thriller and Off The Wall.
There is so much music that was wrote that we will never hear or feel. You can’t imagine. Hell I have some stuff I wrote after dreams that I can’t let go cause I’ll just get scammed

People give Quincy too much credit. A lot of it has to do with Michael Jackson’s musical genius.
The album should have been called "Quincy Jones presents Thriller by mj and Toto". It's a shame Toto did not get appropriate credits.
It should be mj thriller album. If you check credits you’ll see how involve mj was
Legally they can't do that. Toto is a separately entity from their band members. Paich, Porcaro, Lukather, etc. were hired as songwriters and studio musicians.
None of it works without Michael Jackson. Most people know Quincy Jones produced it and some of the guys (not all) from Toto played on it and wrote some songs.
@@rrdream2400 yes, of course. We do know now, because recently it has been talked about it more, in 1980ies not many did know
😂 you don’t burn in the 80’s kid 😝 great Interview!
Yeah, I've been doing this for a couple years and I've definitely had my flubs hahaha. I'm happy you enjoyed it though!
Amazing where song ideas come from....Like Bob Marley's wake up and Live is from a bill board cure for indigestion.
People forget that the album Thriller won’t be successful without MJ’s Beat it and Bille Jean which MJ wrote it. MJ’s songs on the album own every single awards Human nature didn’t get any awards. People think Quincy made Thriller successful it’s all about Michael and without MJ Quincy won’t have the biggest selling album in the history.
Let's enjoy this version of Human Nature, instead of arguing on who did what. Life is too short, let's enjoy every minute of it. Have a great day/evening/night and feel good. ua-cam.com/video/3oxjjPcjibo/v-deo.html
Much respecr....carry the load, bro...been there...😔😚😅
Well of course without Micheal the album wouldn't exist, but don't try to downplay the song and try to extinguish Steve's contribution for not getting an award.who cares about awards?the fact that it's a great song can't be denied award or no award.micheals voice on that song is what makes it great.
Thriller was a team effort. It was a great success because of MJ, Q and very important contributions from great musicians, writers and engineers.
True facts Michael was and will always be the "greatest" ever and nobody will ever change that!
🤩🙌🏽✨️🙆🏽♂️🎵🤍👑💯
Michael Jackson was a intelligent, talented businessman!
nice
He takes 100% credit for writing this song, but there was a CO-WRITER, which always fails to acknowledge...
He gives full credit for the verses rewrite to John Bettis.
Where do I find these Demo’s?
They’re on UA-cam, here’s one. ua-cam.com/video/DtK8UUttIxU/v-deo.html
Not to nit pick, but you don't know that came before Thriller???. 35yrs in production my advice to you is do your Pre-production. I say it Respectfully. That wasn't a good look, "Off the wall" is a classic and help him make Thriller
Thanks for the comment. I’m a big fan of Off The Wall, and I thought at the time he was talking about Michael’s early solo records and got confused for a moment.

@@chasjazzz7842 No problem at all! I appreciate your feedback, it really helps me improve!
I didn't take it that way at all. When he said Michael's 1st solo record I also thought it was when he was a kid, Off The Wall was his first solo record with Quincy Jones.
The real question you forgot to ask was where is that cassette? We need to hear David's songs too! 😇
I know, I'd love to hear them! I'm assuming the label owns them.
@@TheVibeChamber I doubt, if anything it is of no benefit to them except David Paich and everyone like you and me who want to hear what Quincy heard that fateful day.
You got a video mate, keep it up. 😁
this song sounds like toto's and the commodore's songs
Let's not forget John Mayer's performance of this song at Michael Jackson's funeral.
11:06 Nobody needs permission to perform a song written by others as long as the authors are credited (and as long as it doesn't contains real samples from the original).
So it’s basically a Toto song
You are aware that Michael had recorded numerous solo albums on Motown before he recorded with Quincy Jones on Epic/Sony Records?? Quiny Jones met Michael again on "The Wiz", where he was musical director of the soundtrack and movie. He met Michael when he was 12 before then..
This interview seems to worship Thriller which is fine but it baffles me he has no clue about Off The Wall, which many may say is critically a better album. He completed ignored it when Steven said he played synths on Off the Wall. I would have gone crazy about that if I was the interviewer.
Off The Wall is an incredible album and arguably better, I just wasn’t sure what he meant when he said Michael’s first album. You’re totally right though, if I get to talk to him more I will/should discuss that album more.
@@TheVibeChamber Sorry, now I get the misunderstanding. Great interview!
No problem at all! I appreciate the criticism because it helps me gage my future interviews.
@@TheVibeChamber I retract it. I actually misunderstood. Off course you know OTW!
I've seen MJ about 3 times in concert in the 80s and 90s. I was too young to see Destiny/Triump.
What I find most strange is OTW in 79 and 80 was one of the top selling albums yet there is so little footage of him singing those songs in clear HD. He combined them with the Jackson's concerts but there so little of it. Yet the really early Motown stuff is clear as day.
Somebody in the world must have clear footage. It would be amazing to see him do Don't Stop in the dinner suit and see him dance.
I was also too young to go to see Motown 25 where he shot to megastar in one night.
You should do a whole show on Rod Temperton and Heatwave. An incredible story.
Yeah, most of his recordings are from the Bad tour and HIStory.
He was living with David paich? After Toto was huge??
Why??
Probably because of a divorce.....and some people need emotional support during times like that.
How much money did he become for this song on Thriller ?
How can this interviewer get Sooooo much wrong??????
Honestly I’m not sure.
This is a great song. It was never released as a singer.

Toto is one of the most underrated bands on the planet. They have more hits than Pete Rose
He also accidentally invented the moonwalk. He was trying to get gum off his shoe. Michael said " can i borrow that " 😜

what a clever way to smuggle your genious traxx to a producer lol!!! "We run out of Cassettes"i love him.......clever what ??? 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Sonically and lyrically I prefer his demo to the Thriller version. So few words that say so much. Its about that painful realisation that you can't always be there to protect your child when you send them out on their own into the big scary world. All you can do is make platitudes to hopefully soften the pain and make it make sense to them.
The magic is in the way Michael sings it. Only he could bring the magic.
That's it!!!!!
I thought it was MJ that wrote all his song?
Yeah, no biggie, just Quincy Jones asking for some material......whatevs....
The older Steve Porcaro ages the more he looks like the Angry Grandpa
