Finally someone does a deep dive on this band! it's very weird to me how people don't bring them up when talking about 00's "emo/scene" even tho they were up there with The Used and Paramore in terms of popularity.
FFTL was my favorite band for many years and is till up there. It's honestly sad how forgotten they are considering like you said, they were huge. And arguably the sounds they played with ended up being more influential overtime. They deserve way more credit than a lot of other bands get from that era. Same with Aiden, The Chariot, Drop Dead Gorgeous, and Matchbook Romance. Just seems like everyone forgot about the mall goth era when late 2000s scene took over.
@@graymads Absolutely agree. Aiden is another band from that era that's very special to me. Shame that people don't talk about them. I feel like MCR fans would absolutely love them.
Sonny Moore is by far one of my favourite vocalists of this genre. From his slight lisp and the raspiness of his voice to his lyricism in Heroine… I was gutted when he left the band, but I enjoyed seeing FFTL play their self titled album when they opened for Deftones in 2007. Matt fell off the stage and hurt his finger and his guitar got bloody while he strummed until the song ended. Metal af
I was 15 when “note to self” started to blast on Stevens Untitled Rock Show back in the gap. Whenever that shit plays at emo nights at clubs, the pit still goes crazy
One of the best riffs ever written mate. I still remember the first time I've heard that intro riff, I decided to pick up a guitar and write the same music!
I came back to say two members (Derek, drums, and Travis (guitar and unclean vocals) are in the band If I Die first, which is basically FFTL 2.0. FFTL is still active and Matt Good stated they have new music ready. Hoping they do something this year for the 20th anniversary of dear diary. Where it all really started for them.
I can't even put into words how much this band means to me and the good memories i had singing their songs with the people that i've cared the most. An special person for me who passed away years ago used to find himself in Sony's voice and lyrics and everytime i hear FFTL i just feel like i'm a little bit closer to him again. I've think that FFTL is popular in USA but where i'm from is basicly impossible to find someone that knew who their where, so thanks for sharing the band, I hope that UA-cam's algorithm makes it reach more people like it reached me.
Found this band a couple months ago after finding Chiodos, and I’ve been going down the rabbit hole ever since. As a current high schooler who loves modern core shit, it’s been a wild experience going back and listening to where all the stuff started, and even wilder finding out that Sonny was Skrillex lol. Used to listen to dubstep all the time in 6th grade, even shaved half my head like Sonny did. I’d like to say my musical taste came full circle. Great video, looking forward to binging your entire channel🤘
It's probably not integral to the story of how the band started but the reason they were looking for a guitarist and recruited Sonny is because Travis actually broke both of his arms while riding a skateboard and barrelling into a wall. I don't remember where he said it anymore but it was some interview. Then they heard Sonny sing the backing vocals in the studio and decided to put him on vocal. By then most of Dear Diary was written by Matt so yea Sonny's lyrics are Emily and Boxer on that album. Also probably it deserved to be mentioned in this video as well - the show in the very early era of the band with Sonny where he performed with blood running down his face from the broken nose which some guy broke 30mins before FFTL performance and he refused to let it stop him from singing. I think it was Warped tour, the video was on youtube. This injury, which was never properly treated and caused his nose to heal wrong, caused his later vocal issues (due to him being unable to breathe through his nose and only thorugh his mouth, putting strain on his vocal chords) which eventually lead him to leaving the band and even later getting nose surgery after 3 previous vocal surgeries. He also said after the surgery that he never actually learned how to sing properly since his start as the band's vocalist was so quick and there was never time for him to learn any techniques and his screaming was done always in a way that was damaging him further. I want to mention something most people don't know and highlight just how generous and incredibly caring to their fans FFTL always were. In 2008, after the release of self-titled, the band announced tour dates in EU and back then I contacted our local promoter in a futile hope of him trying to secure a date for Prague. He did and the band agreed to become the last addition to a show along with Silverstein. The most amazing part of it is that they did this show for almost no fee at all, simply because they've never been to Prague and wanted to visit. They had the best time here, we hung out with them after the show and they were the nicest guys ever and basically did this show for a city tour and dinner after concert by the promoter. Second thing I want to add is that despite the kickstarter long-winded path with Dead Trees, year-long silence, line-up changes and everything, they committed to delivering that album to everyone who supported it. Even though the lowest support tiers were originally only for digital download only, they shipped the physical copies of the album even to them all over the world. So, thank you for this video, bringing awareness back to them because honestly they were one of the pillars of the emo/post-hardcore scene in the 00's and deserve all the recognition. I still consider them as one of the top favorite bands in my life. Hopefully we will hear from them again at some point.
Back in elementary school, 5th grade to be exact, I had a friend named Darren that introduced me to them. He put one of his headphones in my ear when I asked what he was listening to, lol. I'm 30 now. Thanks, Darren. Wherever you are, I hope you're doing alright, man 🤙🏻
Would you consider doing a video about Senses Fail? I’ve always wanted to see a documentary style video about them as they’re one of my favorite bands ever and one of the best from this scene
@@graymadsThey were working on an EP and we don’t know everything that happened, but something bad happened at Emo Night/before a show and shit fell apart It was presumed to be made up of Make War, Surrender, and Veins, but Veins ended up turning into a collab with Shinigami (at least that is the current theory, since it has a mix between that poppy style of Make War and Surrender as well as some of the instrumental style of Dear Diary.) Even though Sonny is gone, the band (and the members) have been teasing a “Throne To The Wolves Part II” on Twitter, mentioning the prospect of it early last year. FFTL may not be fully laid to rest. It deserves to go out with a bang, as opposed to the 2 singles and 1 collab song we got. Something happened between Sonny and the boys, either he bailed on a show due to his busy schedule or just couldn’t make it work for one reason or another, and the band has been wanting to get a record out for 5 years but is too afraid to get more backlash after Sonny only came back for 2 songs.
As an fftl fan from well over a decade ago I just came across this and I’m in love, you need way more views, I hope this random find pushes more to your channel.
this was such a great and informative video. fftl is such an incredibly underrated band. it’s so nice to see other fans that still dive into the nostalgia of their music and continue to appreciate it.
It's interesting how history works. For those interested, Matt Manning was in a hardcore band called Nor Am I, before he joined FFTL. I was also in that band (as the singer) and I had connections with people who knew FFTL, and brought the band down to that area, where Matt became friends with them while Nor Am I was still a thing. Our drummer had just left to pursue school, and we were looking for a new one, and before I had joined Nor Am I, I tried out for another band called "The Last Try" which consisted of drummer Jake Bundrick (Mayday Parade) and Blake Steiner. I ended up joining Nor Am I instead, and when our drummer departed, we talked to Jake about playin drums for us. He even came to a tryout, but ultimately did not end up playing with us, but in doing that.. the rest of the band (including Matt Manning) got to know both Jake and Blake Steiner.... Of course Matt would end up in FFTL shortly after our band split, and he recruited Blake later. I didn't end up playing in any notable bands after that (sadly) but it's fun to think about sometimes, (and they probably don't even remember it) had I not joined Nor Am I, they likely would have never crossed paths, and this musical history lesson might be very different.
"Heroine is an absolute masterpiece" - absolutely agree. FFTL was one of my favorite bands back then. Still rinse that album to this day. Thanks for making this!
Dude I had no idea about practically any of this! The line up changes, the meaning behind some of the lyrics I’ve been listening to for years! Matt Good’s absolute unwavering tenacity all of those years. erm yeah thank you for making this. Sometimes I feel like I’m the only one who fondly remembers this band and thinks that they really did something innovative and special. As far as I know they were the first to do the helium vocal post hardcore with pop punk sensibilities. It makes sense that one of the members ended up in human abstract that’s also one of my fave bands. I hope Matt is capitalizing on this revival right now 🤔
Heroine is still a top 25 record for me. People only ever talk about Dear Diary, but Heroine is objectively the most diverse and intense record they made. Hell, I still ride for self titled and at least SOME of Throne lol.
I watched the music video for “Ride the Wings of Pestilence” over and over. They had influences of other Warped Core bands but they had that intangible special sauce that set them apart.
such a great retrospective on fftl 🔥 this is the most in depth and thorough of details ive heard of the band and sonny's early career in music in particular. fantastic job! 👏🏻 i was glued to the screen until the very end. 10/10 this makes me want to revist their music now. for some reason i always was more drawn to matt's records than sonnys i never knew why i still dont cuz sonnys voice is one of a kind. maybe cause i always thought matt was such a cutie so that could be one reason lol 😅ummm throne to the wolves was always my personal fav record of the bands. worlds away is also such a classic to me and always pops in my head. imo sonny and matt both have such raw powerful vocals that are just very engaging to listen to.
It wasnt during Warped Tour, It was the 2006 World Championship Tour headlined by Atreyu. Atreyu kicked them off because they were going to try and have Craig sing and that would compromise the whole package. I remember it well.
Still mad years and years later that we were denied experiencing Craig fronting FFTL for a tour. When I finally got to see Atreyu over a decade later, naturally, Alex had just vanished from the band. I hope they felt a little bad about dropping FFTL off the tour after a similar thing happened to them (and they still got to play)
@@xrekozax Alex is the man, genuinely nice person. I cant speak to the rest of the guys. You weren't missing much IMO. Peak Atreyu was victory records era, they were fantastic back then. A fantastic comprehensive overview but man how did you skip over covering their final (as of now) show in NOLA 2019. It’s where they played Surrender live for the first time, and they even whipped out Populace In Two. It was such an amazing show to be at
Man great video, just found you from your reddit post. FFTL was my real entry into the genre decades ago and hearing the tracks from the video brought back so many memories. I can't really get much into their newer rebirthed albums, but Dear Diary will forever be a part of me. I'm still riding the wings of pestilence to this day.
I turned 30 this year, and FFTL became my favorite band when I was 11 years old, fresh into middle school. My music taste has evolved over the years, but I have never stopped listening. Despite how much Surrender, Make War and Gensis are far outside my taste -- I still blast those singles with fervor and sing along. I'm still holding out hope on catching them live one day. 🤞🏻
Goddamn, I genuinely welled up and shed a tear when you said that _Heroine_ was a masterpiece. They'd already been one of my favorite bands since their debut but I vividly remember the first time I'd heard the synths from the title track for _Heroine_ on a Fuse ad and I fucking knew that I needed that album. It's for sure my all-time favorite of theirs with _Throne To The Wolves_ right behind it, criminally underrated and underappreciated, I always loved how much of a cynical middle finger _Throne..._ was, and has aged fucking incredibly. Oh and Derek's drumming went so hard, easily my favorite from that era of the genre/scene. 🖤
@@graymads Lol agreed my guy, you do too, especially after watching your Dir En Grey, MSI, & BMTH vids, still need to go back and comment on Diru & MSI lol
Love them sm they're my childhood band with my all time favorite Worlds Away. If only I was born earlier to experience it longer. And c'mon Dead Trees was and still is a badass album I love them all to be frank
I remember finding these guys in college and I fell in love with their music. Every album never failed to impress. (Throne to the Wolves is my personal favourite.) Now I’m 36 years old and still blasting them out on a daily basis 😂
Wow i found someone who made content about FFTL. Legendary and unknown. It's strange that nobody did this before 'cause this band have really interesting story. TttW is unfairly underrated. Still waiting something new from them. Nice video, keep up the good work! :)
Wow, their self-titled was one of my favorite albums years ago, it's interesting to hear an opinion completly different from mine. English was never my first language, so I was never thinking about lyrics as the biggest part of their music, for me this album is just so catchy from beginning to start, that is addictive.
There used to be a full video of their emo nite set on either owsla or fftl's UA-cam page, and it seems to be gone now. There's a couple reuploads of individual songs, but not the full show. I hope it isn't lost, super important piece of music history
I will never understand what it is about FFTL that stuck around to me through all these years where others left it behind. Theres so many parts where it feels like they caught lightning in a bottle. When I think of the scene back then this is the first band I will always think of. It felt like a movement for my teen angst and kinda shaped me a bit.
I love Sonny's vocals both in FFTL and those in his first electronic music projects to a point that it's insane. If you listen to "Mora" you know what I'm talking about. So versatile as a singer
I actually had to cut it because the UA-cam content ID blocked the video over that song. Most of my channel is demonitized because I use clips but a few songs straight up get you blocked off. Had to cut 3 songs including a 2 minute breakdown of "The Words 'Best Friend' Become Redefined" thanks to it.
I just don’t get why he never mentioned the song “Worlds Away.” It was truly a groundbreaking song that changed the scene musically and showed a new sound that everybody loved.
“Throne to the Wolves is their second best outing, behind Heroine” Finally. That album was so much better than it got credit for. Those first four albums have always been close to my heart. There’s also been no other band I’ve followed as closely, which was a roller coaster for a fan. The abuse they took from fans after Sonny left was horrible, Myspace briefly filled up with stuff like “you guys suck without Sonny”. Every time I think of that I think about how Throne was basically the soundtrack to my life for that year. The Color of Violence was also one of my all-time favorite hardcore records. The surf rock style and humor made it an iconic album for me.
Iremember them on fuse with my latest plague. I didn't get into them that much and kind of forgot about them. In 20212 I found them again and got dead trees. I also have throne to the wolves and from first to last as well.
One armed boxer is such a good song i love the drumming from this band in my opinion it isnt talked about as much as it should be, secrets dont make friends is another really solid drum track
I went to a family reunion around 2004 and saw family members I hadn’t seen in over a decade, or at all. They learned I could play guitar and someone brought one out to ask me for a song. I had just learned minuet so I decided to play that song. All the elderly people and adults loved it. But the one girl my age just looked at me from across the deck judging me. Judging hard. Hahaha
Sucks that matt and his biological father had just reconnected and rekindled their relationship after X amount of years. i.e. "you would bury the hatchet and start again but you threw it all away" also what hit me when my friend matt told me the whole story was "you were so young! x2 your were so dumb! x2" Sorry if some lyrics are off but anyways. Very hard on matt and I could see it.
I saw the Fallout Bout / All American rejects show when it came to Columbus back in the day. From First to Last and October Fall ( another great band ) opened. I had no idea FFTL was opening and I lost it when they came out and the I thought the girl I was dating at the time was definitely gonna leave me cause I was so hype and not many people knew who they even were.
When I was younger, friends of mine used to play these guys songs on their phones, I didn't really think much of it, sounded whiney and such to me at the time but that may be because of how bad the phone speakers were and how bad my concentration is. When I listened to these after I got home a few months later and actually paid attention to the instruments and lyrics I was like... Holy shit bro shit is so good.
I'm so glad I'm not the only one that remembers FFTL. They were my intro to post-hardcore and will always have a special place in my heart

They kicked Alex out, he cant say it but he alludes to the fact that theres legal clauses that wont allow him to exactly tell the truth about it.
just found you on my main page binged al oad of your videos, you have a good style and i like how through your documentary style is. you should have a lot more subs. great content keep it up
Thank you so much!
Absolutely Amazing video, super well done! FFTL is one of my favorite bands of all time and you definitely did their legacy justice with this.
I am glad you liked it! FFTL deserves to be remembered for the legends they were!
Mannn no video could've been better to document FFTL. Thank you for making this!
Had to do the boys some justice. Thanks for watching!
Their debut is my favorite album of all time. I go back to it multiple times a year
Dear Diary is god tier
@@graymads something about that early 2000 emo post hardcore that just hits different. That album and Alexisonfire’s debut are insanely good for their time
I really hope they return. They’ve been dead quiet since Emo night 2019 😢
rightt:( its cuz skrillex is too busy dj-ing lol
@@stephaniemendez2049 yep, and it’s the 20th anniversary for dear diary so I really hope he takes time to stop with the DJ nonsense, like he’s gotta get bored of that at some point. He knows fans want something new so I really hope he can for the fans but also for the band itself.
Sunny is back out of the band they really should have stuck with Spencer sotello He's a phenomenal vocalist, he may not have went back to periphery if they hadn't kicked him out.
Not anymore
@@villagewolf999 yeah I’m highly aware. They stated they will be playing shows, not a tour but shows here and there
EXCELLENT QUALITY DOCUMENTARY
Aesthetic is my favorite album of all time.
Hands fucking Down! Great album.
I'm still riding the wings of pestilence to this day.
thank you! and yea FFTL is the best band from that era.
Those are my two favorite albums too. Good taste.
@@graymads Lol agreed my guy, you do too, especially after watching your Dir En Grey, MSI, & BMTH vids, still need to go back and comment on Diru & MSI lol
Oh my heart ❤
So siick to see a video about this band. Still one of my favorite bands to this day 😼
Love them sm they're my childhood band with my all time favorite Worlds Away. If only I was born earlier to experience it longer. And c'mon Dead Trees was and still is a badass album I love them all to be frank
I remember finding these guys in college and I fell in love with their music. Every album never failed to impress. (Throne to the Wolves is my personal favourite.)
Now I’m 36 years old and still blasting them out on a daily basis 😂
I love the fftl album ive slowly grown to really like every single song
Massive FFTL fan. Really love the video until the end. Those two new songs are NOTHING like the OG Sonny era.
Thank you for making this.
Wow i found someone who made content about FFTL. Legendary and unknown. It's strange that nobody did this before 'cause this band have really interesting story. TttW is unfairly underrated. Still waiting something new from them.
Nice video, keep up the good work! :)
Shout out Chris Lent. Current drum tech for Polyphia
yesss i used to listen to my teenage angst has a bodycounton my CD walkman on repeat lmaoo what a great album. xo
I'd love more music from them. Such a good band. Way ahead of their time in my opinion. I still jam them all the time.
My first concert when I was 14 in 2005, with He Is Legend and Haste The Day. Wish I could go back all the time.
Absolutely amazing
Dead Trees review was the most generic part of the video sadly, love that album. That album is amazing.
I miss MySpace
Degenerate.
Heroine is an album i've listened to more than anything else I've ever purchased. Even tho I probably do like the sound of Dear Diary more.
Update August 2024. They just released a new single. Genesis.
Awesome video! These guys don't get the love they deserve.
subscribed cause they were your top in HS. same bro. FFTL and The Used >.>
checking the sonny video now before I continue this my b
I will never understand what it is about FFTL that stuck around to me through all these years where others left it behind. Theres so many parts where it feels like they caught lightning in a bottle. When I think of the scene back then this is the first band I will always think of. It felt like a movement for my teen angst and kinda shaped me a bit.
Watching Skrillex Origins Story 🔥🔥🔥
It’s hard to believe that this was my favorite band almost 20 years ago.
BMTH new song Lost sounds like what FFTL should be sounding like today. I honestly feel like they wrote it and gave it to BMTH
Thank you for this. I've been listening to FFTL since the beginning. I hope the boys make one last album idc if it's with Matt good or sonny .
I am so glad I saw these guys back in the good ol' days on the Heroine tour! The title track still remains one of my favorite songs of all time!
I love Sonny's vocals both in FFTL and those in his first electronic music projects to a point that it's insane. If you listen to "Mora" you know what I'm talking about. So versatile as a singer
aesthetic EP is the best album from them IMHO
You sir earned a sub for life, cooking something up with Derek and Travis, fingers crossed
yo that sounds amazing! what kind of project?
@@graymads a collab with Cholera Violins, their new goth/post punky band, they are making some incredible stuff
ALSO, you never said a damn word about failure by designer jeans. I think that deserves a shout
@@graymads oh ok fair
I just don’t get why he never mentioned the song “Worlds Away.” It was truly a groundbreaking song that changed the scene musically and showed a new sound that everybody loved.
im not sure about everything else u said but i do love worlds away was sad he didn't let us hear a snippet of it lol :'c
Surrender is an absolute fucking CLASSIC!!!
Love From First To Last! Super underrated IMO. My band Discord Theory is lucky enough to record with Dear Diary producer Lee Dyess 🤘
Great video 🖤
Dead Trees is a badass album and that’s a hill I’m willing to die on.
Absolutely you will not
FFTL was one of the GOATS with ALL their albums, especially throne to the wolves.
This is my fav band
Great video
Iremember them on fuse with my latest plague. I didn't get into them that much and kind of forgot about them. In 20212 I found them again and got dead trees. I also have throne to the wolves and from first to last as well.
Heroine is the best album of that decade. Of that genre.
There's nothing else to say about it.
Their first EP is by far their best release!!! I fkn loveeeeee that EP
Lolololol and "For the Taking" is my favorite track
My all time favorite track on Heroine is the self titled Heroine. Absolutely incredible
One armed boxer is such a good song i love the drumming from this band in my opinion it isnt talked about as much as it should be, secrets dont make friends is another really solid drum track
🤘🤘
my heart your hand my favorit song in ep aesthetic
AESTHETIC IS THE REASON I LOVED THIS GENRE
I still can’t believe this is the same guy who made bangarang wtf
I LOVE Throne to the Wolves, one of the few albums I never get tired of listening front to back… or from first to last ;)
Track called “worlds away” on self titled with Matt (my crush) singing is about sonny leaving!!!!
Hahaha
What's the background song starting at 6:46? I've heard it many times but dang is it driving me loony trying to remember..
The one armed boxer vs the flying guillotine
Sucks that matt and his biological father had just reconnected and rekindled their relationship after X amount of years. i.e. "you would bury the hatchet and start again but you threw it all away" also what hit me when my friend matt told me the whole story was "you were so young! x2 your were so dumb! x2" Sorry if some lyrics are off but anyways. Very hard on matt and I could see it.
FFTL 💗
I was introduced to heavy music in 2010 I lived in the middle of nowhere and listened to metro station lol
