THE STRANGE HISTORY OF SAOSIN

  • I talk about how Saosin changed the post-hardcore game with their EP "Translating The Name" and their debut self-titled album.
    - Why Saosin's version of post-hardcore/screamo caught on and inspired bands like From First To Last, Scary Kids Scaring Kids, and Drop Dead Gorgeous among many, many others
    - How Anthony Green's vocals and charisma were key (and how he compares to Cove Reber), along with the addition of Justin Shekoski on guitar and Alex Rodriguez on drums
    - How Beau Burchell came up with his vision of combining 90s emo like Mineral and Sunny Day Real Estate with fast, chaotic drums and metalcore riffs
    - Why bands like Finch, From Autumn To Ashes, or A Static Lullaby were earlier but didn't catch on like Saosin did
    - Why they deserve more credit for being early to vlogging (SaoTV) and social media (Friendster) thanks to Chris Sorenson

I know this is an old comment but that stuff happened SO long ago with the whole"beef", I don't see how everyone isn't already aware of what happened. A quick Google search will fill in most of the blanks for you if you don't. Also, the bands (and members) have apologized/made up & even performed together since the beef. I think Circa Survive's success can be attributed to Anthony's connection with the audience, music, lyrics, etc. (along with the rest of the band being wildly talented). He really is a special type of frontman. Got to meet them in Cleveland earlier this month, awesome guys.
Definitely check out the new album with Anthony back if you haven't already. It's a great mixture of his vocal maturity with Circa and amazing Beau riffs.

Ryndan Riley I agree a bit with you, he struggles a mad ton, more than a lot of vocalists I’ve seen, some may even go as far to say that he’s completely lost it recently, although he performs there new album pretty much on point, just can’t really do the same for their past stuff. In a way, I could say that(even this is a stretch) that his voice itself may be replaceable and the least special in the band, but he’s definitely still the most irreplaceable frontman/presence a band could have. There’s just something about him, especially if your their in front of him, even if he’s yelling lines he used to sing so angelically, there’s just this immediate and intimate connection that most of us fans keep coming back for. He’s truly a powerful person. Being backed by the most amazing bands.

Everyone in this band except for Anthony is insanely under-rated at their respective instrument. Alex is a brilliant drummer who I wish people outside the scene would talk about more often. Justin is a shredder, Beau’s riffs are super tight and heavy, and Chris is a solid bassist who provides the right foundation for the other 3 to build on, but also lays in a short fill that elevates a melody or highlights a chord change perfectly, plus he and Beau a good backing vocalists.

Just wanted to emphasize how much Saosin are the reason any of the bands after exist, be it Pierce the Veil, Dance Gavin Dance, Sleeping With Sirens or Hail the Sun. Without Translating the Name, none of it happens! And as a drummer, I'm so glad you made the connection about the busy screamo drumming. I hadn't consciously made that connection but you're so right! They're the reason that risecore bands like Sleeping With Sirens, Woe Is Me, and Hands Like Houses still have that crazy over the top too-many-notes drumming style 😂 and even all these "swancore" bands as they're called, though a good chunk of them could be names Saosincore! Hail The Sun sound like a carbon copy of them sometimes, and then bands like Makari and In Angles are heavily indebted to both Saosin and Circa Survive. The influence here is nye immeasurable! Bro, THANK YOU!!! THANK YOU so much for making this video, I will watch it over and over... I just love Saosin SO much, particularly TTN and their eponymous full-length. I remember the first time I heard TTN, someone had it on in the background while they were doing stuff and I was just passing through the room doing laundry, and the sound of Saosin stopped me in my tracks, I felt like this was the sound I'd been waiting my whole life to hear... Downloaded the new album (which at the time was Saosin) pronto and have been truly in love with it ever since. I don't listen to that early stuff often as I've given it hundreds of listens, and now I save it for when I really need it, when I'm upset and need comfort I stick on Saosin or Iowa by SlipKnoT. Saosin the album ranks up there for me as one of the greatest albums of all time; it's not easy to get Saosin stuff in Australia, but I've got the album, the special edition of the album, the LP, the Come Close DVD, and a for radio release of Sleepers (also heaps of stickers, a big-ass poster and a zip-through hoodie). Thanks for making this video and putting my love for this EP in better words than I could ever compose man. Translating the Name was such a fucking game changer, and seriously perfected the entire concept of melody amidst chaos IMO. Seven Years will continue to be my go to favorite track for years to come lol. This channel is the best.

I think Thrice - Illusion of Safety was a more influencial album for the genre and was released before Translating the Name

I really liked both Anthony and Cove for different reasons.

I personally enjoy Anthony's rough vocals on the track Translating The Name. When he sings too flat or too sharp in some places it adds an eerie and emotional edge that many artists in heavy music lack. The only other singer who does that, that I can currently think of, is Chino Moreno of Deftones. On songs like Minerva, Good Morning Beautiful, Lhabia and MX your can hear him bending in and out of key creating a satisfyingly dark atmosphere with his voice. That's why I was instantly hooked when I listened to Saosin's EP for the first time just a few days ago. Not to mention the vocal effects, harmonies and just the fact that Anthony is just an amazing vocalist in general.

Anthony's screams on "Seven Years" is literally the greatest screaming voice I've heard in all of post hardcore.

I think they had a pretty unique sound and they originally released alls well thats ends well in 2001. sure that version was pretty awful but the sound was there.
