- Bigger tires? Maybe a lift? How about a bumper and winch? The list goes on and on and they're all related to the one question that I get asked all the time, especially from people who are new to Jeeps. "What is the very first mod I should do?" Fortunately, Jeep JL Wranglers are without question, the most capable off road vehicle that money can buy and right out of the box. And, if you have something like a Rubicon, there really isn't anything more you'd need to get out on the trail and have a good time. But, what if you've got something basic like Pippi, our bone stock 2-Door JL Wrangler Sport? Well, my answer would be, the essentials! That was the very first mod we made to the JLU when first bought her. Found mine on market place for $100. I couldn’t get there fast enough. Now she wears 35s and a 3.5 lift. Next is bumpers and winch. Eddie Cindy and Ripley thank you for providing one of the best channels on UA-cam. You couldn’t ask for a better channel.

Definitely agree on the rock sliders, that was the first major mod I did. Got them used, but perfect, off Craigslist for $250 for my Gladiator. Even my wife agreed on them, but mostly because the rocker area looked unfinished on the Sport model. Not only does it clean up the look but that area is now well protected. Glad we agree!
Love the look of them on my Rubicon. It’s a must have for the Sport and Sahara in my opinion. It finished off the look of the body.

I just got a 19 JLU rubicon 2.0t. Already has 35s. First thing I was going to do is rock sliders and lower body armor 😂 thanks for confirming my notion 🇺🇸💪🏼
Before we bought our new 1999 base model wrangler (4 cylinder engine, manual transmission 14x5.5-inch steel wheels, 205/75-15 tires, no air conditioning) we had used Isuzu Troopers for picnic and camping trips to hundreds of locations far from paved roads in Utah and surrounding states.
1: Tow hooks. We specified that the dealer install tow hooks (two front, one rear) before we took delivery.
2: Tires. The next day (and without consulting me), my wife traded the 205 tires for (5) tires size 235/75-15.
3: Tow strap. Our Isuzu Troopers had tow loups - not tow hooks - so we had been accustomed to carrying a tow strap with hooks attached to the strap. That strap was difficult to use with the Wrangler tow hooks so we got a strap that had loups on the ends of the strap.
4. Grab handles. A pair of side grab handles to install on the forward parts of the standard Wrangler “Sports Bars” (i.e. between the roll bar and the windshield). The grab handles made getting into and out of the Wrangler much easier, especially for my wife (who is short) when she rode in the right front passenger seat - and for me when my wife (often) drove with considerable verve.
5: Sway bar disconnect. We never disconnected the front sway bar but I fabricated a disconnect for the rear sway bar. I had to crawl under the Wrangler to disconnect or reconnect it but it took less than a minute to do either. We tried to plan our off-pavement trips for when no rain was forecast but, on those rare occasions when the roads were wet when we got back to pavement, I sometimes drove on the paved roads without first reconnecting the sway bar - never farther than to the next town and I never exceeded the posted speed when the sway bar was disconnected.
6: 12-volt tire pump. To allow airing tires down to 15 lbs. when leaving pavement and airing up again when returning to pavement.
7: Polyurethane bushings. We thought the Wrangler suspension was remarkably good (for a vehicle with “solid axles” front and rear) but our son gave us a complete set of polyurethane suspension bushings. I briefly considered trying to install them myself but quickly decided to have them professionally installed. They didn’t make a huge difference but we both liked the feel of “truck” suspensions better than “car” suspensions and the polyurethane bushings made the suspension more “truck-like”.
8: Roof rack: Ours was a Smittybilt. It attached to the body of the Wrangler (not to the optional hard top) so I think a soft top could have been lowered and put back up with the rack installed. The hard top maybe could have been removed with the rack in place.
9: Edelbrock IAS (Inertia Active System) shock absorbers. From the time I started reading about vehicle use off pavement, I had read that many people recommended “tightening” adjustable shock absorbers for use off pavement and then adjusting them back to their “soft” setting “for a better ride” on pavement. That NEVER made sense to me. It seemed to me that it would be better for the shock absorbers to be “tightened” for use on pavement (for better handling) and returned to their “soft” setting to allow better compliance off pavement. When I read that Edelbrock made shocks that did that automatically, I started saving my money. After getting the Edlebrocks, we found that the ride was as good (maybe slightly better) on the rocks without airing down than what it had been with standard shocks and airing down! Edelbrock shocks are probably not worth the money for people who only drive off pavement once or twice a year. But our schedule permitted us (for a few years) to drive off pavement a couple of days once or twice a month from April to October. Not only better control on rocky roads but a HUGE time savings if you explore off pavement as often as we did back then. Edelbrock IAS shocks were not available in the U.S. for a while but I see they are being advertised now. Don’t yet know for which vehicles.
10: BFG All-Terrain tires. After driving them for a while we decided they had better traction than the other brands we had used on our Isuzu Troopers and on the Wrangler but the more noticeable advantage of the BFGs was that they allowed more precise placement of the Wrangler on the right side of narrow paved mountain roads - VERY helpful when meeting oncoming traffic!

Rock Sliders were one of my first mods for my JLU, even though I had the stock Rubicon sliders, I added a pair of ACE Engineering Rock Sliders for added protection, which also doubles as a step stool to get into my Jeep 👍🏻
I'm on a budget so I'm only doing mods that are essential for the places I want to go. Ironically I did add Rubicon rock rails for appearance as much as anything. I think mods depend on what you want to do with the vehicle. For me I added tires and springs/shocks off of a Rubicon. I will suggest for anyone driving off of pavement the first mod should be front mud flaps. My tires throw a lot of rocks up on the doors and the front part of the rear fenders.

Living in south Florida, the first mod on any vehicle should be window tint 🥵. Saves the interior and saves you from having miserable days in the vehicle. Plus, it looks awesome 😎
Was the very first thing I did on my 19 JLU sport. Found take offs never scratched or off road, two pair for $40 a pop.
Nice score and they are a LOT cheaper for a 4-door. 2-door owners treat them like gold.

I bought a new F250 STX crew cab 4x4 recently. My mods were floor mats, line x bed liner, rear inner fender liners, seat covers, window tint and ceramic coated the paint. My next mod was a Rtic cooler with an American flag wrap for trips. Of course a new dog bed for the back seat for my GSD.
If that was my Jeep I would go with rock guards, window tint, seat covers, ceramic coat, a dog bed for your dog and a cooler.
Love those rocker guards. I put a set of Rubi take-offs on my JLU Sport S for pretty cheap. Good thing too, because they find the rocks all the time!

I really expected something different out of this video based on the title. I must admit… it may have not been the sexiest “first” upgrade… but it was an extremely practical one. It pleasantly surprised me and I can’t argue with your reasoning.

02 2-Door TJ here. First mod was to dump the side steps and install rock sliders. Back then the simple solution was to bolt on angle iron to the tub, no connections to the frame. Poison Spider made some stronger ones that were higher grade steel and went up higher on the tub with cool plasma cut logos but were expensive.
Your "factory" sliders replacements stick way too far out and down low and connecting them to the frame is bad Ju-Ju. They also look kinda soft and maybe can't take a big rock hit without distorting. The tub is meant to be isolated from from the frame on flexible pucks and bolting on the tub with a rock slider and into the frame which flexes is gonna cause problems.
Or maybe I'm wrong and newer JLs are built different so it's OK to go with a box section slider but you're paying big time concerning clearances. Of course no handy step to get into the Jeep is a hassle but I say maybe if you can't get into your Jeep unaided you may have a problem.

I think that the best way to describe this kind of mods to keep the Jeep pretty stock is "reversible mods", because you can comeback to the completly factory configuration without leaving any kind of signs from the mods (like drill holes and stuff like that)💪💪

Rock sliders, skid plates and more capable tires are absolutely the best first mods to a stock Jeep. With those three, you can test how capable your rig is stock, then buy suspension and other mods like winch bumpers to enhance your capability.

My first mod on my JTR was rock sliders, even though I already had the Rubicon rock-rails, because they doubled as a step for my wife and my son. Went with Ace Engineering rock sliders, since they allowed me to also keep the rubi-rails, but without losing any ground clearance.
I can’t wait to see more off-road videos showing the capabilities of Pippi!

Stockish is my favorite. I kept my 2006 TJ Rubicon stock and my JT Sport will be kept stock ish. 32s, steel bumpers, winch, and a few other little things. I’m jealous of your half doors!

Nice video doing the smart basics. My list for our 2020 4-door Willys is: Fox 2.0 shocks (already installed), Nitto or Toyo (Ridge Grappler or MT's) 255/80-17 (33" x 10" pizza cutter) tires keeping the stock (17" x 7") wheels and no lift. Eaton TruTrac front/rear (should I regear from 3.52 to 3.73 for the 1" tire size height increase and 5 lbs of extra weight per corner... I don't know yet). Stubby aluminum front bumper with steel plate for a winch. The Willys package came with the rock sliders, transfer case skid plate and fuel tank skid plate. Interior: I've already installed a HAM radio (Icom ID-5100) and I travel/off-road/camp with a Garmin inReach mini. Looking forward to more with the Pippi Project. Cheers! Pete - KI7LIL

I started my 2dr JLR the same way. It’s my everyday driver and only vehicle, but since I wheel it too I went with protection as my first priority. Heavier duty rock skids, under body skids plates, and front and rear diff skids. Oh let’s not forget the evaporator skid! Now I just hope one day those half doors become available soon. Love those doors! Wish it were an option in 2019!
Can't say that I'm a fan of aftermarket skid plates but we all have our own idea of what's needed. That said, I wish the half doors were an option back in 2018. I'd have them on my JLUR and JT if they were.
I learned the hard way about rock sliders. I bought some that were very expensive but definitely not rated for rocks. Now my sliders are welded to the frame.
That's always the best way to go.

For my current JKU and my previous KJ, the rock rails and aftermarket engine/front end skid plates were some of the first modifications I did.
To add onto that thought, a CB radio or some form of communication equipment may also be a good choice for a first modification.

I took delivery of my ordered 2021 JLUR about 2 months ago. First mod was ARB twin compressor with Grimm Off Road brackets. Then, thanks to your videos, I put in fender welting on all 4 corners. I put clear protection tape on all the hinges and thresholds, and seat covers in front (i get dirty at work). I have a JL Tazer I have yet to install. I think those are a pretty good start. Thanks for the vids, I enjoy them greatly!

I guess I feel lucky with my wife's JT. I got the JT Rubicon rock rails for $150 almost new. And they helped install them.
Awesome! JLUR and JT rails are definitely more abundant and way more affordable. 2-doors are slim pickins and the owners tend to treat them like gold. LOL

Was going to say when I saw the video title, for the Wrangler it's a no-brainer to go after the OE parts that were included on higher trim package models that others have removed to upgrade. They're usually cheap and fairly plentiful. Also for the Wranglers, the body design makes rockers tuck up nicely. On other vehicles sometimes rocker armor ends up sticking down far below, basically guaranteeing a hit, when perhaps the vehicle would have just cleared if they hadn't been there. The Wrangler doesn't have that problem to the same extent.

Good choice for a first mod! I think the first mods should be the cheapest mods you can find that you didn’t get when you first got your vehicle. I actually found the perfect Jeep for me: a ‘20 Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon with the entertainment and tow package - pretty much the lowest cost Unlimited Rubicon on the lot. I got the Mopar all-weather mats later and slowly swapped out my exterior bulbs for LEDs. I still need to swap out my plastic bumpers!

Skid plates!
We've always found our factory skid plates to do their job and well.
Did anybody else keep rewinding the end… when he kept looking from each side of the tree was the most adorable thing ever! Great vid. My rubi 4xe came with all that so I started with a lift and rims and tires. Great work guys!

1st and so far only mod we did on Jake was the spider web shade. The 2 seat version since we live in an aprtmwnt have no place to stow the the rear hard top.
1. Decorative seat covers
2. 24" chrome wheels
3. Angry birds grill covering.

I need to laugh at myself. I got jeep and all terrain tires. I searched the easy roads, but they are not easy. That Tulsa divide was scary. The scenic Red Rock was scary as well. I feel ridiculous.
LOL - no need to feel ridiculous. Off roading should always feel a little scary. It's what keeps you thinking straight and helps to make smarter decisions.

Ended up eventually with 31's.... re geared rear diff. Warn brush guard/winch. 1.8 four cylinder motor. Weber carb.. headers... custom steel rear bumper. Rancho Suspension... Mid 80's,,, I miss that truck,,,,

I don’t know if it’s considered an actual mod or not but for anyone wanting to go out off roading in any vehicle, not just a Jeep, everything off road related first begins and starts with the tires! The proper tires will give you the best traction needed, as well as the best sidewall protection. For what I do I prefer BF Goodrich All Terrain TKO’s and now TKO II’s in 10 ply. They have always worked very well for me with a majority of stuff that I like to do.
Next is ground clearance and suspension. For rock crawling and/or slower speed off roading where you will need your vehicle to clear obstacles, ground clearance is #2 combined with proper under vehicle protection like skid plates and rock sliders, then followed by suspension as #3. However, for faster styles of off roading where higher speeds are more of a reality such as Baja style racing and so on, then suspension is #2 followed by having better ground clearance and everything previously said that goes along with it as #3.
After that is making sure your vehicle has enough power, horsepower, torque and gearing to do what you need it to do for whatever kind of off roading that it is that you are wanting to do.
The last 3 things but which are both as equally important as the previously mentioned ones are having proper recovery gear and tools such as a winch, Hi Lift jack and tools that can let you do an off trail/temporary bush repair job to get you through the area where you are off roading at and back to your home and/or home base to then have a permanent fix, repair and/or part/component replacement done to get your vehicle back to pre-broken/damaged part condition prior to your last outing and then next, proper off road lighting for once it gets dark and the sun sets.
For those things I prefer Warn Winches. My most recent one is a Warn Zeon 12-S winch. I prefer to go slightly overkill with my winches because I may not always be recovering just myself, but someone else too, and/or instead.
For tools I encourage people to use anything that is considered high quality tools. And then for lights I prefer KC Hilites. In my opinion, they make the very best off road lights around. Their quality is top notch and their customer service is second to none, and is the very best that there is out there hands down!

Clearly, we all have our own idea of what should be first. New and better tires are great to have but for how I'd like to use my Jeep, I don't see how they would protect my rocker panels.

I think it totally depends on where you live and the task you are going to ask from a vehicle. For me it was lights. I know ppl say lockers before lights. Well I’ve use my lights every night. So I say install what you need first.

Here in the salt belt I wish I would have put anti-seize on the big underbody bolts. They all snapped off when I removed them later.

FWIW..I have jk jeep with a maximum lift..upgrade shocks..and front diff..beefed up..running 37..with a slight rim offset..well i decided to put on smaller tires and rims..probably 37 be OK for winter..but tires are about 630 each. 4 plus spare..so got smaller steel rims...I like 37s but feel save em for spring summer
I’m okay with leaving my new 2022 Willys JLU stock. I don’t street my drag bike and I don’t drag my street bike. I don’t pull my farm tractor and I don’t farm my pulling tractor. I don’t off-road my daily driver and I don’t daily drive my off-roader. So, I’ll leave it the way I bought it, with factory rock rails.
