      G-emperor Flame akira toriyama actually tried a number of poses when he was alone in order to decide the best pose for the Kamehameha. After much contemplation, he could not decide on a name for his "Kame" attack, so he asked his wife, who came up with the name.She told Akira that it would be easy to remember the name of the attack if he used the name of the cultural Hawaiian king named Kamehameha

    The volcanic eruption seemed a bit too convenient so I did some research. Apparently yes, there was a "unusually explosive eruption" that occured in 1790. Not only is the ash layer still very much present, but there are footprints in it, some dating from around that period (based on radiocarbon dating). It was once believed that the footprints were from surviving warriors, though a survey in 2008 concluded that most of the footprints were from either women or children. Also the rebellious army was apparently on or very near the summit when the eruption happened. That's one rather unique way to loose an army, having the mountain you are walking across erupt under your feet.

    • @Thraim.
      @Thraim. 7 років тому +175

      History is full of "too convenient" stories that would get a playwright fired if he tried to put them into his works.
      Life *is* stranger than fiction.

    • @chadoftoons
      @chadoftoons 7 років тому +8

      If you're going to attempt to correct someone, you should do your homework first. The volcanic ash itself wasn't what was tested, but rather organic material that was trapped by the ash and turned to charcoal.

    • @Seruvius
      @Seruvius 7 років тому +12

      +AdalRoderick
      Very true. There are so many examples in history where small quirks of situation or order of events have huge consequences. On the other hand many such quirks happen all the time and have no effect on history, so a law of large numbers alone dictates that sometimes a "convenient" occurence will have some major effect
      +Toney Smith
      well the person answering you and your reply to them appear both to have been removed, as I just saw the notifications for a message but nothing here. Strange. Either way, my understanding is that yes radiometric is the general term for dating a substance based on nuclear impurities, of which radiocarbon is one form. I believe radiocarbon dating was used as it was not the ash itself that was dated but various organic material buried within the layers of ash. This particular volcano has apparently had many eruptions over the years and hence layers of different age.

      @00101001000000110011 7 років тому +69

      that's not the origin of the word "mana", singular. Mana was a word used by Jews before Christ in one example. i think there are even older uses of the word than that.

    • @davidmaxwell4696
      @davidmaxwell4696 7 років тому +105

      The word mana occurs in a variety of languages. I'm honestly not sure which one went on to influence the current usage of the word, you can make a pretty good case for most of them. I'm pretty partial to the Hawaiian origin myself though lol

    • @geraldgrenier8132
      @geraldgrenier8132 7 років тому +132

      "Mana" as used in this video is Polynesian. the Jewish word you're referring to is "Manna" and referes to god given food, no a type of spiritual power.

    • @greenlink875

      THIS. History classes, especially in the US, tend to ignore much of the world outside of Europe and North America. What i know about the Ottoman Empire, the late Roman Empire, pre-colonial Africa, and Polynesia, I know from EH.

      Most definitely
      I live in Australia and we really only look at European history and usually history that has something to do with the UK or the US (although we did do a great unit on the unification of Germany and another on the Meiji Restoration in Japan).
      I've only just found this channel and love how it shines light on smaller histories around the world, especially in the non-European pacific and the Middle East.

      Poetic Pariah It would probably look a bit like total war shogun 2 if you ask me. All clans have the same troops but each clan has certain specializations. The only problem I see with this is the size. The Hawaiian islands aren't exactly the largest so it could cause some problems gameplay wise. Also navel combats would most likely play a larger roll in it.

      There seem to be different "levels" of Hawaiian... Not in an obviously bad way though.
      There are people who look native Hawaiian and get treated a bit differently, because people are just naturally a bit racist.
      There are folks who grew up with "native Hawaiian culture". A lot of that is actually a relatively recent 'revival' version of traditions though.
      There are non-natives who have lived for a generation or more on the islands, many of who are part of ethnic/cultural communities based on their ancestral homeland but also distinctly a "Hawaiian" version.
      And there are people who's families came from someplace else who grew up here.
      Interestingly, to me since I'm one of them... Folks who have lived in Hawaii for even a few years are considered Hawaiian in some contexts. It isn't just the legal thing. Especially on the Big Island, a lot of people come and go quickly when their imaginations (based on media and being a tourist) are confronted by the reality of actually living here. Once you've been here long enough to sort-of prove that isn't you, people start treating you a bit differently.

    Akira Toriyama actually tried a number of poses when he was alone in order to decide the best pose for the Kamehameha. After much contemplation, he could not decide on a name for his "Kame" attack, so he asked his wife (Nachi Mikami), who came up with the name.[13] She told Akira that it would be easy to remember the name of the attack if he used the name of the cultural Hawaiian king named Kamehameha (lit. "the very lonely one" or "the one set apart" in Hawaiian language).

    This will probably get lost in the comments, but I'm here to tell a cool story about the king that relates to my family. Long ago one of my ancestors went on a Mormon mission (when the Mormon church first began) to Hawaii to preach "the truth" and whatnot. He came across the descendants of king K and taught them "the truth" and as a gift for sealing their family "forever" they gave him the staff used by kamehameha to my great great... grandfather and it was passed down to my great grandfather who donated it (along with the journals of my ancestor who got it) to (I think, don't quote me on this) the BYU Hawaii campus to be on display for all to see. Which means I've touched the hands of someone who has touched the staff.
    TL;DR: great something grandpa got kamehamehas staff as a gift for giving the family Mormonism and my great grandpa donated it to BYU (I think)

    I only just learned that they were called that, I've always known it as The Land Wars.

      Naman Hegde Actually, he did name it after the king. Yes, kame means turtle in Japanese, but Toriyama couldn't think of anything catchy to name the move that had 'kame' in it. So he asked his wife and told him about King Kamehameha. He talked about it in an interview waaay back when.

      This might shock you, but the native Hawaiians didn't speak Japanese.

    Kamehemeha's father had obviously not read Lear, splitting up the kingdom between his family.

      Watcher Zero It was his uncle, not father. I think he secretly wanted the prophecy fullfilled but at the same time could not dishonor his eldest son, heir to the kingdom. Hawaiians were religious and honored their gods. Its possible he wanted honored both and chose to let fate decide.

      Yeah, he likely did it on purpose. There was precedent where the same thing happened with the legendary king Umialiloa centuries before, which Kalaniʻōpuʻu would have known well. Kamehameha was highly regarded by Kalaniʻōpuʻu, probably moreso than Kīwalaʻō, his son, who accounts show as being a bit of a detached and weak ruler.
