- huge thanks again to my Patrons! I hope I got all your names right... your numbers nearly tripled since the posting of the first Patreon-backed video and I am VERY thankful and infinitely humbled by your incredible support.
today's thumbnail graciously done by Lark! he actually did it ages ago and I only now got around to finishing the edit on this video...
yes I know the "mince meat" thing is referencing O'Neil's catchphrase and yes I did edit the music to specifically play the start of the riff after every edit to drive the viewer the maximum amount of insane

ok NERD if you actually wanna see Metal Slug gameplay here you go, I played basically all of the main series games, including doing a couple with Lark!
Playlist of full VODs for Metal Slugs 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, X, and XX: ua-cam.com/video/7Ct6w2AfUQE/v-deo.html
My other main channel Metal Slug video which is a condensed look at my plays of the first 3 games: ua-cam.com/video/uD35f9HUW9s/v-deo.html
I think this series is an often overlooked classic so it would warm my heart greatly to spread the love of it to others. The first few (and best in my opinion) games are on Steam so give 'em a try!
Goated series
Will the other ones get their own dedicated video like the first three?
I'm gonna assume your not going to play metal slug tactics, but then again I'm pretty sure nobody will play metal slug tactic when it comes out.
Do you play 3D one ???🤔🤔
It’s NEO GEO hours
I love the idea that they got tired drawing tanks and stuff for the concept art so they just started drawing a random anime girl for a bit
I'm not saying I'm ok with all 345 images, but I DO understand where they're comin from
I mean you should be able to give us some insight into what happened here, what with you being the sister of the game's producer and all
@@jamesdessent5984 I'm too evil
It's done to boost morale
"woah cool tanks haha!"
"anime girls..okay"
"disturbing hellish image"
"haha look at that picture of that zombie man!"

I guarantee the training lady wasn't originally in the game, but someone drew so much art of her they said "fuck it" and put her in.
Sophia(?) I believe was her name. Is the Training Room Lady from the home ports of Metal Slug 1 (specifically the first one as home ports of the Metal Slug games usually would have a Combat School with a different Instructor.)
She originally intended to catch female fans to the franchise... yeah we can kinda see how that turned when there was a lot of concept art of her.
The Combat School bit was supposed to be some sort of Visual Novel bit where you eventually date her, you can sorta see in the final product. Instead you just "impress" her with your Metal Slug skill (playing through various truncated version of the stages or playing a stage under a certain restriction.).
In some games, I forget whoch, but when you get the highest rank in Combat School you get awarded "Green Demon Mode" which what is supposed to be the concept art for when Marco looked like a Green Demon, which when you play, Green Demon Mode in Combat School, you have to play through the entire game in a single life with infinite grenades(? [sic, can anyone clarify the stipulation of the challenge?]).
@@dracmeister Yeah, Sophia Greenville is her fullname. There's also another one similar, Cynthia Hartrett, which has the visual dating story mode in MS7 like you mentioned. I guess they finally implemented it. Man I love Metal Slug too much.
It is posible that some of it is fan art and the developer put on there 🤔🤔🤔🤔???
@@memesfromdeepspace1075 highly unlikely.
A lot of these works date back around the release of the first game/the game they feature in. Notable exception only being Metal Slug 4's first boss (Brave Guerrier) and a very early(?) design of Jupiter King (Metal Slug 3, mission 3 boss) both in home port of Metal Slug 1 for the Playstation.
they really had their intern Just scan their entire archive lmao
The Xenoblade 2 art book that comes with the special edition has a note from the editor, saying that the book was meant to be 200 pages long and they thought that was too much before starting but that once they were deep in, it felt like it wasn't enough
This intern did not have that restriction, and we're all suffering the consequences
This intern would be me on my medication, doing whatever it takes to fill the time extremely efficiently, albeit ineffectively. There was probably even more art, but the shift was over
I frankly love this for the sake of, like, fan archival shit. a lot of art books end up getting heavily curated so that they’re orderly and presentable. The way this mass of images is presented like an amateur image set and just includes everything is. It’s certainly strange but I love how much it must have been able to feed metal slug fans ykwim
Absolutely, I'm not a HUGE MS fan but I know there are games for which stuff like this would make me geek out
Is he looking through concept art? If he is then these images are way different because the developers were doing lots of experiments with stories and art styles. Like you said sometimes these galleries are too curated and that results in only inclusion of concept art that resembles the final version or whatever won’t make the developers look bad/weird.
@@protocetid yeah idk why he was portraying this as bad. I love seeing concept art in games. 350 images? Sign me in!
@@alexfc679 The sheer quantity is a delight for game history preservationists, the only downside is how disorganized it is. There are expensive collector’s books we wish had this amount of concept art so we could solve some mysteries that have puzzled us for decades.
@@alexfc679 oh and I almost missed that elh avatar!
You know your Designers are good when throughout development your concept artists start randomly seizing, their eyes glaze over and then they alternate between drawing anime women and gargoyles from hell
drawing tanks and guns and metal and nothing else for 50 hours a week does shit to your brain man
crazy how one minute you're looking at beautifully intricate art and diagrams and then you see GIGANECK man and goblins
and then damn near tits-out porn all of a sudden, i mean, im not complaining but like, have SOME consistency.
Most of the time spent developing this game was digitalizing the concept art to put it all into the art gallery.
this video is only 9 minutes long but it feels like a lifetime
He put the music BACK IN
Your first mistake was not paying attention to the fact that the slide counter has 3 digits
Ok, the patreon supporter screen was integrated PERFECTLY
the image numbers he used were of the weapons, which is oddly fitting
I think this is gonna be a reocurring bit since he did something similar in the Little Inferno video
@@clowdyglasses he said his plan was to have them in a slightly cheesy/creative but still legible way, i think
You can't even call it lazy, way too much work went into compiling this. I wonder if there's any metal slug concept art that ISN'T in here
I think only Metal Slug 7 as it wasnt produced by then.
I fucking adore that you made the page numbers change as you went through the Patreon supporters... Do not think that went unnoticed
7:41 someone has to draw tarma as jerma now
Goes to show how many artists with their own styles and takes on the franchise worked on it. Wish it were better organized and more user friendly.
Specifically the music.
The problem really is that they just dumped the art gallery from the previous games without organizing it this time, which is why the "Welcome to the Gallery" and "The End" title cards are out of order.
fun fact: the super vehicle we all know and love was indeed planned to be a sort of mecha like the ones seen in 1:29, 1:36, 1:54 but the idea was scrapped bc the devs believed that it would detract from metal slug's intended genre being ww2 dieselpunk (mecha belonging more to the realm of sci fi).
We got a LITTLE close with some designs like SVW-001 (slug gunner) and I guess it (1:36) almost looks a bit like crablops from MS7/XX which came from the future so I guess they sorta included it in some twisted fashion
@@potato1341 yeah the Slug gunner is pretty much the only thing that's anywhere close to those concept art.
Born too late to explore the world, Born too early to explore the universe, Born at the right time for Metal Slug Concept art Gallery
Might be mandela effecting here but I heard that metal slug was supposed to be super gritty / dark in early concept which is where all the weird demon and existential horror stuff is from like (6:24)
"gritty and existential" as if that isn't the goofiest fuckin image you've ever seen in your life
Yeah, the first two games (especially the first one) had an actual backstory that never gets mentioned, iirc the two male characters where blackmailed into doing all those suicide missions for the regular army (aka the "good guys"), and in the case they either couldn't complete the mission or refused to, then the female characters would come in to execute them and complete it, after the 1st game the game's tone became more wacky.
@@Corruptor612 i’ll ask for a source on this.
I think that image in particular might be a joke since it seems to be a reference to an HR Giger painting.
What's he reading
This is a top tier grayfruit video
Honestly, you can tell the artists had a lot of fun while drawing these (sometimes TOO much fun), and I can appreciate that.
"Nobody like you, Anybody hate you." Funniest broken English phrase I've eve4 heard.
the cut to black between the image changes is maddening and hilarious at the same time
4:38 Wow! Tyler1 in Metal Slug 6!
Lmao

This really Slugged Metallically! Great job, keep it up!
Godbless the psychos at SNK/NAZCA, so much overkill in this gallery.
pixel art peaked with these games
Every art gallery needs to have a 20 second loop and 400 pages

I would enjoy museums more
3:14 This gives eerily similar vibes to "Ain't Get It, Ain't Real, Cube"
2:32 women want her fish fear her
I can assure you, it's not just women
Most of the time these galleries don't have enough stuff in them.
The art alone scares me on how good these guys were, but the details on the animations had me completely shook to this day. Good stuff all around
6:23 me when mom make me do math homwork
I think the art gallery has so many images and so many "Welcome to the Gallery" and "The End" title cards because the one for this game pulled images from previous Metal Slugs galleries, but they just dumped all the images without organizing for each game. lol
6:11 These goblin-like artworks resemble the Super Devil Mode from the Combat School in the original game running on the Neo Geo console, Marco doesn't have wings nor breathes fire out of his mouth but it's 100% in the game as a bonus feature that makes your arsenal quite OP.
I think that, aside of MS Anthology, this has every gallery until 7.
"This looks kind of sloppy put together"
Bro you're talking about a franchise that has been reduced to plinko games

I saw the bit in the stream, the whole segment peaked at that officer staring at the book
4:39 woah, it’s tyler1!
They really just uploaded the entire art folder into the game huh
I did not own this game as a kid, but I know if I did, I would totally spend an afternoon trying to look through every image in the gallery, p*ssing off all the people in my home, and that would become a core memory of my childhood.
Aww hell yeah metal slug
I got progressively more giggly throughout the course of this video, I stood no chance
I still remember playing a ported version on my laptop that had all the games, can't remember if it was some special edition or whatever, but there was a gallery option that allowed you to see the stuff shown in the video at your own pace and I won't lie, seeing art of the girls(especially the swimsuit ones) definitely did something to young me.
It must have been Metal Slug Anthology. The only games it misses are Metal Slug 7 and its remake, Metal Slug XX; as those two were made afterwards.
omg so happy that your patreon seems to be a success!! love seeing your content
The art slowly reflected our own psyche and then anime girl
I believe the image at 4:47 is supposed to be Okabe from Power Instinct
Also you have to realize how ballsy SNK had to be to reference the Hadoken as often as they did when they were in direct competition with Capcom for most of the 90s
To be fair it was like a friendly competition, I mean Dan is pretty much a mix of Ryo and Robert, a joke character sure, but he got popular anyway. lol
@@SammEater you mean Ryo?
@@masonhhoffman Yeah, misspelled. lol

It’s been a year since this video, popped up in my recommended again. Cheers to the video that introduced me both to your fantastic streams and the wondrous series that is Metal Slug
they just put everything in it dear lord
4:15 no adams apple haha, totally looks backwards
You know, looking at this concept art a lot of it reminds me of early Dragon Ball. I actually love that they were willing to just toss whatever the artists made when they were bored on here
i think you might be the first person to have ever scrolled through every single one of these pictures
The fucking Ashita no Joe refrence at 4:46 fucking caught me off guard lmao
Definitely stealing some of these for reaction images
2:32 this gives me bad nostalgia for old shitty visual novels. Like it makes me feel bad that I played those. The blurry real life background photo hurts my poor bones.
Instantly one of my favorite videos. Gotta love Metal Slug.
I think the funniest thing about this video is the fact that you chose to make it in the first place.
Fun game to try: match up the pictures with their respective pokedex numbers
170 is the guy pointing a flashlight at himself which just so happens to correspond with Chinchou. That's kinda neat, I guess.
lmao the opening showing the end of Metal Slug 6 and not the rest of the game is like inverse easy mode in that game
instead of cutting off the final mission to mock you for playing on easy, you cut off everything but the ending
METALUG....
When the world needed him. Gray answered
Never thought this would be so literal.
Legitimate love the patron end card stuff. Never thought I'd like that sorta thing, but you make it so fun!
Man, most of this concept art dates back to the 90s , i remember seeing like 80% of this images in the concept art gallery in Metal Slug X.
Thats a lot of art
This is the most schizophrenic in game art gallery ever, and I fuck with it a lot of that art is super cool
I watched this all live it was great and here I am again
This kind of shit is great. A lot of concept art and fun doodles they did too
Gotta love that music
the concept art never ends
I need to watch this stream someday so I can see the whole gallery myself
This is what happens when an artist doesn't want to delete anything but their PC is out of space
This sure is art
Ngl thought this video was gonna be a joke about the game's framerate and I don't know if I should be pleased or disappointed at what it ended up being.
this slug is made of metal
Now this is content
grayfruit my beloved
how does he have such a good memory of it while recording
This is like in Kickstarter funded games when they have to add some in-game thing for every backer and it goes on for like 20 minutes too long.
Yet another reason as to why i love metal slug lol
Some of these are actually terrifying
3:30 was that a Neon Genesis Evangelion reference?
allen has that special unga bunga head
Allen is a simple man, he kills entire armies, laughs, dies, gets home for dinner, goes back out to fight, dies and gets eaten by a whale, goes back home for dinner, goes back out to fight, dies in a plane crash, appears seemingly magically on an alien spaceship miles above earth...

I think one or a few guys really liked drawing tanks and mechs and military stuff while everyone else just wanted to fuck around with the characters and you know what? I respect that
Who would have thought a hand drawn game would have so much artwork...
2:37 Malon from Ocarina of Time
Imagine the meme potential with some of these images.
I actually remember looking thru the art gallery with my friend after we played the first three games and we were sitting there, stoned asf, just looking at the image at 6:13 and losing our minds over how funny it was. It literally has nothing to do with the game AT ALL!!?
Holy shit man I can’t imagine going through all this art high without knowing what you’re getting into
