That's a pretty good haul. You guys need to come have a cumbrian holiday. We can go to all 3 of the CEX stores In the whole county. You know the Workington one always be giving up the goodies :)
If you didn't hear some guys in Italy (where 505 games is based) found a load of copies of Rule of Rose still in unopened boxes, been selling them on Ebay, prices are crashing guess people have been trading them in to CEX before they catch on and reduce the price. How many did they find is the question, if it was a few hundred prices might stabilize, a thousand prices will likely drop.
@DanTheGamesMan it's crazy but these things do still happen, even here in the UK. There was a guy in my local paper in in cornwall that bought a warehouse space and it was full of brand new n64 games. Over 15000 games I believe the article said.
I bought Rule of Rose from Italy today. Hesitated on the buy button due to the cost for ONE GAME, but the FOMO was too strong in the end. Price is ticking up on the listing I bought from and looks like they’ve done at least 735 of them so far. Reckon we’re looking at 1k total, but who knows…
Looking forward to see videos of CEX stores outside the UK. AFAIK there are CEX stores Spain, Portugal, Mexico, Malaysia, The Netherlands, Australia, India and Italy. Curious what they offer and how items are priced compared to the UK. And yes, I'm from the Netherlands. Most stores are quite well managed but in the last few years quite a lot of stores closed due to enourmous rent increases or mismanaged stores. From the initial 22 stores I believe there are only 10 left.

@@Squato sounds like they’re getting around then even if there is some issues, what are the stores like? Are they similar to ones I’ve visited here in the U.K.? Do they offer retro games as I know some in Europe do not….
@@DanTheGamesMan The stores have been around for a while, at least 10+ years. They have been interesting to see develop, change, and grow over the years. Same for other such stores. When they started, they did offer things like cd's and the like, but those went out yonks ago. I think they only did that to test the waters for the market, and because others in the same space also used to carry that stuff. When it comes to retro stuff, on the otherhand, nah, they never really went for anything that was older than the Original Xbox/PS2/Gamecube, beyond the odd PC game they largely have no idea how to handle. Saying that, there are times people have gone into the stores to trade in much older things. they refuse them, but the staff have been able to offer to buy on the side. I know a few staff who scored some nice N64 and Gameboy things, simply because the main store doesn't carry those items. I mean, in their early years, they have have dabbled, but it didn't stick and they largely had nothing to do with that. Mostly left it for the other brands out there that wanted to be in that market, most of whom do not exist like they used to. So I am not saying they may not have, but I don't recall them having done anything with that. What I do know is that they largely went into the market with no clue what they would be expecting here in the early years. Which meant they largely kept things at a base rate for everything to be sold at, hence it was VERY possible to walk in and find games nowdays viewed as holy grails going for $20 or less. They did get smart on that, but not before a lot of workers at the time cottened on they could bump up their own collections that way on the cheap. Many insane stories from staff at the time whom hit the dream early of getting the full set collections for some systems (more so Gamecube). Nowdays, it is a bit different in this case. You have staff working out if it is worth trading in what they have for the money, or selling it elsewhere. I know some whom took their high value stuff there, because the returns from CEX was much better than ebay. Same ones would also hold off on taking the really high value ones there, because things like Rule of Rose are just much better sold on ebay over there. Simply because it had been so long since a copy came in that the values online went up higher than the staff who set the prices had had a chance to fix up. Also, as an aside, made it hard to grab some items when they would be traded in. Since people would have alerts for key items, and those often sold within minutes of going live on the site (helps they used to offer free postage for orders over $50). Think this is less the case nowdays, but does still happen. Otherwise, when it comes to the stores. Quality can be mixed, and depends on the staff. Good stores make sure they put out good quality stuff and not bad crap. Some even will refuse trades if it is stock that doesn't carry AUS ratings on the cover (even if from PAL areas) in case the disc or content can't be accessed in Australia as it is from another market (a point if the online store has been dead for years). But generally speaking, yeah, it is easy to trick them into buying your more unwanted crap and trading for something that is more wanted. Something I will admit that I have done a few times, but not as bad as others whom got to trade in cracked discs with the stores as the staff allowed those. Otherwise, unlike in the UK, they aren't the default as they might be when it comes to pricing and costs. Sure, some do in fact use them as a baseline when making finds elsewhere. But their reach is too small for the most part to have hit that point. Saying that, I do use the app to work out if buying something in an op shop or elsewhere is worth it, but not always as there are finds they have no clue on. Might change, can't say. Reality is that where people do take their stuff to sell is to Facebook Marketplace, or the groups for that stuff. Tends to be snapped up quick smart. You do get lucky in the op shops, but not always, and some of the stores have gotten smart on what is worth it nowdays. What I can say is that yeah, there are rivals out there to them in the market for where people sell old games. When it comes to current gen, EB is the biggest player. Otherwise Cashies (Cash Converters) is one of the main players, but not as many stores do sales anymore, as they largely have moved into payday loans in a lot of places (could be cheap finds for retro stuff if you get to them). If not them, then other hock/pawn shops are the best bet, at least from the ones that still exist. There is a few other businesses that focus in on this, but most of them moved away from retro largely years ago before the price jump and now are filled with gamer crap (which EB has dominated anyway, with JB HiFi following suit). You do, will, and can find retro game stores around the place in different markets. Some are old and have interesting stories to tell in their own right. Gamesmen is one of the main ones in this space, as they have been at it for decades and are somewhat seen as worth a visit for one wanting to explore that side of Australian retail gaming history. Hope this answers things for ya!
