    LET'S PLAY!
    Kids learn almost ALL skills through PLAY!!
    Did you know that kids never combine two words in speech before they learn to combine two objects in play?! This is the brain recognizing the ability to combine two different concepts!
    Research shows us that kids have to be exposed to a concept on average 30 times before a new synapse is formed to retain that skill, UNLESS it's acquired during PLAY, which only takes 10 exposures!
    How are your child's play skills?
    Do they play only ALONE? (take a toy away from adult and sit and play) that's not good! Get in there parents & therapists!
    Does your child let you COMBINE toys together? (i.e. plays with blocks and makes a tower but then lets a car knock it down? If not, PROMPT this skills! Very Important for childhood development! Do it quickly, and HELP them do it, and REWARD their attempt & even their ability to tolerate this!
    Does your child use objects and toys for their intended purpose? (do they stir with the spoon?) If not, SHOW THEM!
    Does your child use objects to do silly things? (like fly the car instead of drive it) If not, SHOW them!
    Does your child CHANGE UP their play routines? OR do they stim by just rolling the car back and forth, staring at the wheels, or only play with their same toy over & over again, or line toys up on a table or window sill, or by doing the same activity in the same way/order each time? If so, we have to break this routine by adding in a SLIGHT addition or taking out something! Add in a SENSORY activity such as a tunnel (amzn.to/2RGAjch), play dough, or by adding a new toy into the mix and using it appropriately! Chances are, your child won't like this, HOWEVER, when they are "stuck" in the stimming phase, they are blocking their ability to accept, process and retain NEW information, hence the ability to LEARN. Stimming is simply fulfilling a sensory input need. So what do we do?! We break it up and throw in new toys, routines and activities that will help them to recognize, process and retain NEW information used from PLAY! Your child may not like it at first, much like we don't like new things at first, but that's okay! Hang in there! Keep trying, offering & playing! Acceptance takes time & experience for ALL of us!
    Does your child model what you do with toys? (if you fly the car, will they fly the car?) This is an important imitation skill! Did you know that a child will imitate gestures and play routines BEFORE they will imitate words?! This is why PLAY and imitation with toys is a key factor and sign in a child's Speech/Language Development! See how HERE:

    Thank you for saying out loud that playing is exhausting for the parent! I feel seen ☺️ I’ve been incorporating this kind of play with my 18 month old (only saying 1 word currently) for the last week, and I’ve already seen such a huge difference in his attitude. He seems so much happier now! It’s exhausting but worth it!

    Thank you so much for starting this channel! I just recently found you and your tips are so helpful. My little one is almost 3 and still cries when I take her to speech. However, now we have a better time at home playing. I had no idea how much enthusiasm and energy is required to help someone with speech delay. Thanks again!

      Khristine Ocampo I would recommend looking up “teach me to talk” podcast on your phone, UA-cam or online by Laura Mize, SLP & look at her list of “Pre-Linguistic Skills” I believe there are 11 or 12, she has very parent friendly content that provides clear starting point for identifying where a child is at in speech/ language development!

    Any book recommendations for parents trying to cope and make sense of their childs speech disorder? I try my best with my daughter but sometimes I just feel like crying cause I don't think I'm making a difference. Her speech problems cause her to have extremely big episodes of crying and screaming because no one understands her

    • @TheSpeechScoop
      @TheSpeechScoop  4 роки тому

      For her I would recommend a book that is repetitive, so she gets multiple repetitions of the words over and over again in the book and helps with predictability and that way she can use a little bit more time and energy on motor planning for her speech, book like “polar bear polar bear what do you hear?” Or “brown bear Brown bear what do you see?” Where only one or two words changes each time and you can still work on a variety of skills with that! I plan to make a book video here soon! Thank you for the suggestion & hope this helps!
