    Fly camping looks epic! Can you imagine what it would be like to get with a group of people and go Fly Camping together. Maybe you set out from one spot, or maybe meet up in the air... then all landing together for a camping trip. I think that would be pretty cool.
    Thanks for the video. Loved the adventure!

    I am a ppg and pg tandem pilot and I am worried for your safety. The chase camera is a serious added danger in thermal conditions. I fly with a chase camera at times, but never in marginal conditions.
    Please don't be offended, I just want to keep everybody safe. I hope you would say the same to me if the situation were reversed.
    People who paraglide in strong thermic conditions like that are ready to take a big collapse, even a full one, at any time. When there are updrafts, there are also downdrafts and sometimes they are stuck to each other. So your wing can end up with one side moving up and the other side moving down, which will collapse any paraglider. That is fine if you are ready to handle it and have enough altitude to fall while the wing re-inflates.
    But if you took a major collapse with the chase camera, it would likely prevent the wing from coming back. I think it probably also makes the wing more prone to collapse in the first place, I'll have to ask a pg designer on that. The motor pushing does ram the wing full of air, so a collapse is less likely than while gliding, but wind shear can overpower that. Also, if a wing under power does collapse, it is far more violent than an unaccelerated wing.
    I am psyched to see you showing how awesome PPG is and I appreciate the effort you must go to in order to get the footage, much less edit it into a movie. You seem like a cool guy, so it would be an extra big bummer if you got killed. Please try to be careful that you don't allow the camera (or the desire for a cool shot) to lure you into compromising your safety. Live to fly another day! And keep making cool movies, people obviously love them.
    I tell everybody who will listen: If you can, take a pg SIV course over water (with a rescue boat! - some people forget that part). Make sure it is a reputable and experienced instructor. It will make you a much safer pilot, give you a better understanding of how wings behave in extreme conditions, and give you a better sense of where the edge of the envelope is.
    Cheers!

    • @SlowerLiving
      @SlowerLiving  5 років тому +12

      Sounds like good advice. For reference the chase came is 5 oz. But I'd hate to take a collapse and have it bind up the wing and get all tangled. I hang it with 5 lbs fishing line so if it does get caught on something it breaks real easy. That being said I think what your saying is possible. I also have a super stable beginner wing and haven't been able to get it to collapse. I would like to find a safer camera angle. Thank You for the incite. Maybe I'll leave out that camera on mid day flights.

    Nice video! Enjoyed the fact that you're trying something new with your paramotor. Hike and fly is becoming popular with paragliders. I've seen many paramotor pilots here on the tube that don't seem to understand thermals and where/how they develop. You however sound like you understand it! So respect. As a paraglider I'd be working those thermals to gain alt, and then glide further to the next one. Maybe you should consider learning/attempting to thermal with you motor. You'd be able save a lot on fuel and as the thermal rises it widens and weakens then you could push further. Just my 2 cent worth..

    Who needs pepper spray when you've got a sidearm

    • @gregghicks7640
      @gregghicks7640 4 роки тому

      It looks like a Ruger LC9 because I have one exactly like it. I can say it is useless against a bear and only marginal against a wolf with hollow points. I had the neighbors pitbull come after me while walking my dog in my yard. I shot the dog and the bullet, Federal HST 9mm, didn't penetrate past the shoulder blade on a broad side hit. The dog catcher for my county said if I was going to use it again he would suggest ball ammo instead of jacketed hollow points. I hope that Scott Wohlgemuth reads this and changes to a longer barrel pistol for backcountry or a higher power cartridge if bear and wolves are really an issue. Alaskan people recommend a minimum of a .44 magnum cartridge for a pistol. With that said I hope he takes the advice of using non hollow point bullets if you shoot a bear with a 9mm... or a wolf for that matter.

    • @gliderfs621
      @gliderfs621 4 роки тому

      Ruger Alaskan really looks cool. I hope I'll can buy one, one day in the future. It's hard to buy a sidearm due to anti gun laws. But buying a good hunting rifle or shotgun is way easier, thanks for the good hunting culture here in France. At least, we are free to buy all non metal cartridge black powder guns. I think I'll start there with a 1858. 😁

    • @jakeb3157
      @jakeb3157 4 роки тому +1

      Bear spray is statistically more effective at stopping a bear charge than guns are. My understanding is that it's actually better to to have bear spray as your first line of defense and a gun as a back up as strange as that may sound.

      They are good motors. Every motor has pros and cons. The cons are they are heavy and no tourque compensation which you may need if you get a small aerobatic wing. Harness is a little busy too and they bruise your bicep on takeoff.

      Thanks Scott. I would like to purchase one sometime. Just not in the budget now. I’m in Indiana. Just researching what I can. Thank you.

    "I'll just sleep in here!" Then pans to the sign that clearly reads, "No Camping" :D

    So I've been watching para-motor videos lately, thinking about someday getting into it. As I watched this video, I'm thinking 'wow this sure is nice looking country'. Then at about 1:55 I realize I already live there - about 10 miles away.
