I wonder if the 100 song limit was a carrier demand. It's easy to forget that, at least in the US, companies like Verizon used to have the power to dictate terms to the device manufacturers. They would simply refuse to sell your phone if you didn't comply, and since (even now) most people in North America buy phones from their carrier, this meant you really had no market. The carriers used to make a ton of money on walled garden stores (look up the Jamster commercials if you're too young to remember this) and didn't want to make it easy for the end user to put their own stuff on their phones. The excellent book "Losing the Signal" talks about this.
A mate of mine had the ROKR. The best thing about it was the tight vibration tuning. it just felt futuristic. Even today, you can feel the difference between a high end phone and a cheapy by the way they tune the vibration motor.

Motorola’s decline has been something to watch. I worked next door to a massive Motorola office before covid. I went back for the first time in 2 years and the Motorola office has been completely flattened, wiped off the face of the earth. I know they still work on commercial and business stuff but for the average consumer they simply don’t exist anymore.
They’re still quite present in the phone space, their low to mid end phones are fairly competitive for the price. It’s not a famous brand anymore, but saying they don’t exist for the average consumer is a bit much when Moto smartphones have solid sales.
@@photonicpizza1466 Yup I have one. Moto G Stylus (2021) despite wifi and 4G LTE (when I'm out usually) cutting out from time to time (the latter being resolved by restarting the phone), it's not too bad. I agree with what you said about moto not existing for the avg consumer being a bit much.

Apple and Motorola (and IBM) worked together back with the first Power Macintoshes, and even managed to make a Mac powerful enough to be classified as a supercomputer by the US Government (which resulted in the Power Mac G4 being banned from sale to certain countries), yet 6 years later they release a phone from last year with only 100 songs and crappy controls. Motorola, what the hell happened?
As someone that loves my PowerPC Macs, god I hate Motorola's phones. They still suck, I'm typing this on a Moto G Play right now that's weaker than an LG V20 from 6 years ago.
The division of Motorola that made the processors was spun-off into a separate company around the same time as the phone came out. You could pretty much make a documentary miniseries of Motorola’s downhill spiral.

I had one of these as a kid! It had amazing *stereo* loudspeakers and a really nice cable. The 100 track limit on iTunes was a bummer. I remember that with 100 tracks, it took a lot of time to launch iTunes, and I remember being annoyed that it was so easy to accidentally hit the music button and have to wait for it to load. I really wish you managed to play something over the loudspeakers! Mine came with a pretty fun soccer game and a The Sims-like life simulation, the latter was the first game I played that had this mechanic where it tracks the system time to advance the in-game time, which was a brand new concept at the time for this form factor. Really cool stuff! I actually stopped using it because I bought the iPod Nano, so I guess Motorola's CEO was right haha

I remember when this was brand new. I already then thought it was a failed attempt; I always had the theory that Jobs did that on purpose to weaken Motorola (one of the biggest players in mobile phones back then) in anticipation of the iPhone. Apple had been working on that at this point already, so I thought it kind of fit the narrative, as conspiracy-ish as it may sound.
In a video from fellow tech UA-camr Snazzy Labs about the Rokr, he said that support for the phone on iTunes was dropped early on, while even the first iPod is still supported in iTunes on Mac Computers. (btw you two should definitely collaborate at some point)
Funnily enough, the Razr you showed at the beginning is actually the Razr v3i, which also had iTunes (the i in v3i is for iTunes, if you couldn’t guess) and came out a couple of months after the Rokr.

The fact that the preloaded game on there was a Worms knock off is actually mind boggling to me. That’s such a complicated game for just a phone from the early 2000s. I would’ve expected breakout or something
The Nano was my favorite iPod second to the 4-button iPod only (which I modded heavily!). Had rockbox firmware and played Doom on that thing on the way to school. Love both. And only both. Imagine if this phone was the new apple/Motorola flagship Collab? Imagine if it was any good? Imagine where the tech scene would be at right now?
You should check out Sony Ericsson K800 or K850 to see what the higer end of "dumb-phones" were like. The vibrant selection of J2ME games that I downloaded over the 2.5G connection on these through the multiple app stores I had installed predated the apple app store by a long, long while.
I believe the reason why it came out so terribly is because even though Motorola was a big company at the time and made amazing phones, they were going into unknown territory without having little to any experience prior to this. The idea to have music on a phone is genius, but not if it is a detriment to the phone software and hardware itself.
@@drewzero1 exactly. This product was over hyped but underworked. As it is shown in the video, it had major problems like how slow it was, how it would say "no sim" and how it would sometimes brick itself out of nowhere. 11:49 that's why Steve Jobs basically shit on it at the keynote. The iPhone was well into it's development and he knew he was about to blow all phones out of the water.

I had the Motorola SLVR (pronounced "sliver") back in 06-07. It was the candy bar phone version of the RAZR. And I specifically bought it because it had iTunes on it. I could tell, way back in 2005, that at some point in time the folks from Cupertino were going to merge phones and iPods. I saw my fellow college students walk around campus with an iPod in one hand and a cell phone in the other. I still have that phone in a box in the basement... somewhere. If I find it I'll ship it to you Mr. Dank Pod.
A mate had the beefier Razr (the V3x I believe it was) that had a selfie camera on the hinge and its regular camera was 2MP vs. the regular V3's VGA one. At the time I wanted one of those but could never find it.
I had one of those back in the day. Aside from the improved sensor it also had a macro mode (via a little physical slider near the selfie cam) that worked surprisingly well, as well as an LED "flash" (it didn't actually flash-you just toggled it on and off in the camera app). Unlike the original RAZR that thing was able to take heaps of abuse, and since it had a microSD card you could take more than 15 photos before you ran out of storage. I don't recall seeing it available through any major carriers in the US (though I know the V3xx was), but I was able to buy an unlocked handset through Newegg.
One thing you gotta love is the bit where the Motorola article up and if you pause it and read it, it actually says ‘people aren’t gonna want a device that JUST listens to music!’ And I mean he was dead on the money, he just executed it very poorly
I remember thinking, it would be so cool if you could put on 2 bluetooth earpieces and play music through them both. Little did I know that years later the AirPods would be announced haha!
Whilst the phone itself was ... well shit. Slow, clunky (also, that model 1:15 is not the first in line), barely any memory. It was an innovator. Also, the speakers. The design involved in making the speakers of that phone is... out of this world. It doesn't even need a phone vibrator motor, the speakers were used to vibrate the phone. Technologically speaking, it was the future.
If you're interested in some other funky stuff that Motorola has done, take a look at the Iridium system. It has a pretty wild history and some really interesting technology behind it.
I used to have one of these, it was the cheapest phone I could find with an external SD card. I used the iTunes feature a few times but gave up because of how bad it was. The crappy non Apple music player on the phone somehow better and supported much more than 100 songs. ITunes also locked you into the USB 1.1 transfer speed, it was literally faster listen to an album than it was the copy it to the phone. I used to take the card out and save music directly to that. Thaks for the walk down memory lane. I'd like to say I was nostalgic for it, but the ROKR really wasn't a good phone. The Walkman phones on the other hand....
I like how Steve Jobs was so deadpan on the keynote like "heres something we made i guess"
I'm sure they were already working on the actual iPhone behind the scenes at this time, so he REALLY didn't give a shit.

It might not have been what they really thought. We've had all manner of nonsense quotes from execs who *have* to defend their product, even if its made a mis-step.
Ones that would come to mind would be like Sony trying to say the PS3 6-Axis didn't have rumble/force feedback because it was a "Last generation technology"
Here in Brazil the Mini USB type B cable is still to this day called "V3" because of this phone.
A mate of mine had the ROKR. The best thing about it was the tight vibration tuning. it just felt futuristic.
Even today, you can feel the difference between a high end phone and a cheapy by the way they tune the vibration motor.
I loved this phone when it was new. There were all kinds of modding communities for it where you could crank up the speakers on the phone. It had great speakers for the time.
The old days of using those like hex editing programs to change things on Motorola's. I used to "hack" razrs for people in school
I've yet to hear a phone since that has equalled that punchiness to it's bass.
Not only the stereo speakers were awesome (I'd bet they still sound better than most modern smartphones), they also had RGB LEDs built-in. It was truly amazing.

Just want to say that I appreciate the commitment to the moto nugg. Over 5 months is a hell of a long time to stick with a video idea, and while it didn't end up working like you wanted, it ended up being a great video. Definitely worth it 👍
I love how dank always says “Can you believe no one bought this!?” even though someone clearly bought it otherwise he wouldn’t have had it 🤣
That "Worms Knockoff" was on the Razr too, I remember my sister and I playing it on long road trips sometimes.
Also, you'll find certain versions of iTunes stop supporting devices, even though they say they don't, I still need to run old versions of iTunes to be able to use ipod touches properly
Motorola not only invented mobile phones, but also produced 68000 processors for old Macs and multiple game consoles like the Sega Mega Drive!
Random fact: It was also in radar consoles that the U.S. military uses like the SPA-25G.
Very handy processor in general.
Early and mid 80s ProCo Rat pedals used LM308 chips from Motorola
They also co-designed and -produced the PowerPC G4 for Macs, together with IBM (the Apple, IBM, Motorola [AIM] Alliance).
@@MacPhantom weird you mentioned the g4 but not g3 or g5 lol
I liked their idea of Moto Z series, where they released base phone with upgraded hardware but you could expand it through expansions. Personally loved True Zoom for it's... optical zoom.
Albeit they kept it for themselves so noone else would make other or better expansions....
Wonder if Lord Pod of Dank will ever cover the Apple Newton at some point.
Impressive for its time (still had plenty of issues though) and it’d be interesting to see what he’d have to say about it.
Impressive for it's time if you didn't know about the IBM Simon and immediately lost all it's credibility when US Robotics started selling the Pilot (Aka Franklin Planner) in 96, just about 2 years later.
There's Apple for ya
If I still had my old MP120 I'd have totally thrown it over to him. I had a PCMCIA card with a guide for Apple sales employees to understand the Macintosh line.

I had an e398 at one point. The thing i remember most was the loudspeaker was pretty great. Compared to everything else it was actually loud and sounded like it had a sub in it.
And it might have been stereo.
Yep, I had and still have an e398. Probably the phone with the best sounding speakers I've had. Probably still works, though the rubberized parts of the phone started becoming sticky like 2 years ago and I haven't touched it since. Also the charger port functions in only a specific angle so it's hard to charge, battery doesn't hold much either. But I remember I brought it to school in like 2012-2013 and we listened to music on it with some of my friends back then, somehow it worked fine with a 4GB SD card even though it's not supported.

Revisiting this video and when the footage of Steve Jobs showing the ROKR and being “enthusiastic” about it came up, I was reminded of a quote from the Walter Issacson penned Biography on Jobs (hefty but great read, BTW).
“I’m sick of dealing with these stupid companies like Motorola.”
-“Papa” Steve Jobs

The ROKR was a really good phone. I like how they connected the vibration motor to the audio to vibrate when playing music. Motorola also had a different model that does have this feature, I think it was the V220 I think

it's quite funny how the nano was presented in the same keynote, like, it was doomed from the start LOL
When ego, drugs, and apathy come together in a very special way, magic happens. A magic called garbage.
I don't think Motorola is the one to blame
I had this phone, still have it! I had the black one though (Motorola E398) and they did a collab with Black Eyed Peas with that model. that's why there were already presaved BEP ringtones on this one. Man, I loved this phone. I felt so cool with this tiny phone. The coolest part was the speakers on the side - they had colorful lights built in. So whenever you played music, or someone texted/called you, it would start to flash those colorful lights around like you were in a disco or something. Steve’s reaction:
iTunes phone: “Here’s… uhm, a new phone Motorola made or whatever…
iPod Nano: “Behold! Our thinnest iPod ever!”
You should definitely do more videos on classic phones. Nokia has some very strange nuggets, especially in their fashion lines.
When it comes to his junk automotive vlogs to tech reviews to humour... Those are the main reasons why I watch this channel... He's a real funny yet motivating guy who appreciates his fans. 🙏
0:13, that's not a nugget, that's a whole chicken breast
In a video from fellow tech UA-camr Snazzy Labs about the Rokr, he said that support for the phone on iTunes was dropped early on, while even the first iPod is still supported in iTunes on Mac Computers. (btw you two should definitely collaborate at some point)

Should take a look at the Samsung Juke. I loved that weird swivel open design. felt very sci-fi.
You should check out Sony Ericsson K800 or K850 to see what the higer end of "dumb-phones" were like.
The vibrant selection of J2ME games that I downloaded over the 2.5G connection on these through the multiple app stores I had installed predated the apple app store by a long, long while.
I was a Sony Ericsson fan as a teen, had like 5 different ones, the walkman ones were sweet
I believe the reason why it came out so terribly is because even though Motorola was a big company at the time and made amazing phones, they were going into unknown territory without having little to any experience prior to this. The idea to have music on a phone is genius, but not if it is a detriment to the phone software and hardware itself.
It's almost like big companies make the worst stuff!
@@drewzero1 exactly. This product was over hyped but underworked. As it is shown in the video, it had major problems like how slow it was, how it would say "no sim" and how it would sometimes brick itself out of nowhere. There is a reason why the ipod nano smashed this thing, with the black spots and all.
2:56 So this is where Apple got their modern day business model from.

Dank Pod.
I owned one of these back in the day. What a nostalgia trip.
Same here :’)

I used the iTunes feature a few times but gave up because of how bad it was. The crappy non Apple music player on the phone somehow better and supported much more than 100 songs.
