    I believe its called a "perch" in English. that's just what everyone calls the things birds sit on or its used to describe someone "perched" somewhere. like batman is perched on a ledge etc. but your English is great I had no idea English wasn't your birth/native language when I first found your videos.

      Thank you for explaining! I found out about the "perch" word when another subbie commented and used the word in his comment hehe. But now I'm sure ;-) UA-cam is teaching me so much hehe!

      I'm happy to help! English can be weird and a lot of people have trouble with it. even people who spend their whole lives in America speaking only English can't get it right.

    I had a pair of barn owls because someone found them and couldn't take it back to their nest. Here the wildlife authorities used to be trashy and they said they couldn't do something, so I decided to take care of them at 15 years old, my parents helped and supported me, but one of the baby owls died at days, and the other one at months, now watching your vids I can spot my mistakes, I guess I did some things fine using logics, but was sad that they died, I was so sad for that :(

    • @skinbyrdable
      @skinbyrdable  8 років тому +22

      Hey, don't blame yourself. You couldn't possibly know all of this stuff and it's not like you bought an owl without having the knowledge and then it died. You were in this situation because you're a good person and wanted to help the animals. If this were to happen ever again, you would succeed. Please don't blame yourself. I understand that you were sad ofcourse. Much love from Belgium!

    I am watching all of your videos on Lookie. I love owls and have always wanted one but was too afraid I'd hurt it by not knowing the correct way to raise and handle one. But I am getting my owl fix by watching your videos. Keep them coming; we love these teaching videos. Also, "draft" is the correct word in English for cold air blowing in from the outdoors that make us sick. Yes. This is correct; you have it right.

    Hello! Thanks so much for making this video. Some parts made me really nervous, like causing the owl to bleed to death if we accidentally pluck the pin feathers, or breaking its leg if we attach the bracelet wrongly. OMG 😱 I think i'll just watch more of your videos with Lookie, maybe I get myself a bunny instead. I rescued a baby bird before. It slept with me for 3 days. Then I passed it to someone who's very good with bird but it died the next day! I couldn't stop crying...

    • @skinbyrdable
      @skinbyrdable  8 років тому +10

      I'm glad you realize it's not as easy as it seems. If having an owl is really your dream and having owls is legal in your country, then I'm sure there are also falconers in your region and I would suggest you save your money for the education and then you can have your dream. :-) Nothing is impossible. I'll definately keep making more videos as well informative as 'artsy' (aka emotional) ones. Have a super nice day and talk to ya soon ;-)

    Hello, to that tutorial part of putting a blanket/Teddy Bear/Plushie, I would improve it a bit with washing it with specialized chemistry used to wash clothes for babies, and making it absorb your scent (rub your sweat, or something), so it has way higher chances to recognize you as its parent.

    Falconry is the best and oldest training for birds of prey. There is a ton of information and one should research and keep learning about these flying reptiles.

  • @starlightsoiree
    @starlightsoiree 8 років тому +5

    Thank you for the explanation! The only chicks I've ever raised were chickens which are much hardier birds. Thank you for the information , seeing as it gives a basic handle for what you'll need to learn from your falconer. I'd love to get a barn owl, but I'm curious if they're the 'easier' (I know that no animal is 'easy', some are just more difficult to raise than others) birds? I think in another video you said a man bought two snowies without realizing that they're the most difficult owl to raise; what are the more difficult owls to handle? Thank you, and have a good day the both of ya!

    • @skinbyrdable
      @skinbyrdable  8 років тому +7

      Barn owls are the easiest to keep and to handle so if you want a bird of prey, these are the smartest choice for your first owl. The little owl is also not difficult to keep but has a very stubborn character and stays rather shy. So I wouldn't recommend that. Eagle-owls are also not for beginners as they are really big and dangerous. They become as tame as Lookie BUT the difference is: if I make a mistake with Lookie, it's not deadly for me, if you make a mistake in raising an eagle-owl or a mistake as you're flying your eagle-owl, you can get seriously hurt. Hope this helps?

    Is the blanket/teddy bear only needed if it didn't imprint on you and it replaces the mother, is it just to keep them company and content while their alone, or if the owlet imprinted on you it wouldn't need it. if it's the answer's one of the first two, would a plush owl work for a teddy bear?

    • @skinbyrdable
      @skinbyrdable  8 років тому +1

      No it's needed even if it did imprint on you. Lookie imprinted on me and still needed it. A plush owl is great!

    Lookie seemed to go into a defensive pose when you petted her belly and between her legs. I'm guessing owls don't like that, so you need to be very quick as to not disturb them too much? Or was she just trying to reposition herself without falling?
    Edit: and by pet, I mean check if they're full .-.

    • @skinbyrdable
      @skinbyrdable  8 років тому +1

      It's not necessarily that she didn't like it but more that she was very active when I was making the video and she didn't wanna stay on the glove, she wanted to fly around but I cut that out ofcours :-). That's why she was moving so much. You little owl will totally allow you to feel her belly :-)

      Ah, okay. Thanks. I've just always been in love with owls my entire life and felt a bit of a connection, especially with Barn Owls. I want to know as much as I can before I even consider scrounging up enough money to visit a falconer (owler?) to learn more and attempt to befriend one though, so this is really helpful. ^-^

    very informative. someone just brought me a 10 day old owl chick. knowing to feel the belly to see if they are full is SOO helpful. I work with exotic birds and their crop (belly) is higher up on the chest.
    can youtell me what to feed a 10 day old? I gave it chop meat.

    • @skinbyrdable
      @skinbyrdable  7 років тому

      If it's a barn owl, don't give it normal meat. Give it one day old chicks or mice and baby mice and baby rats. Don't give the hair and bones but only the flesh and organs because the 21st days of their lives, they can't make pellets yet.

    I have a few questions and I hope you take the time to answer these.
    1) in the first few weeks, what do you feed your owl? is it still mice and baby chicks but cut into smaller pieces?
    2) when did you start taking your owl outside? how many weeks or months did you wait before taking it out for a walk to the park or something?

    • @skinbyrdable
      @skinbyrdable  8 років тому +1

      Hello there :-)
      1) in the first few weeks: mice and baby chicks BUT I only gave the flesh and no bones because a baby owl can't produce pellets yet. So this means I picked the flesh from the bones.
      2) After about three months (when the owl has ALL of its feathers) you can take it outside for the first time. If you have a yard, you COULD take it outside a little bit earlier but only for a few minutes to play in the grass and only when it's not too windy or cold. So only in summer and stuff... But I'm a safety first person so I waited until she had all of her feathers because I would have DIED if she would have gotten sick and died.
      I hope this answers your questions? Don't hesitate to ask more. ;-) Xoxo

    • @claudineng4835
      @claudineng4835 8 років тому

      Thank you so much for responding quickly!
      I have another question. How often do you feed your owl? Once a day, twice a day, or just when it's hungry? How do you know if your owl is hungry?

    • @skinbyrdable
      @skinbyrdable  8 років тому +1

      I feed it once a day and I give it two chicks a day. If I'm flying her every day then she's on a feeding schedule: 5 days a week she gets two chicks, one day a week one chick and one day a week she doesn't get anything. You should feed your owl when you want to feed it, not when it's hungry because it's hungry when it screeches and if you only feed it when it screeches, you'll reward the screeching and it will screech your ears off in the future every time it thinks of food which is... always. :-) There are two different seasons in which you don't feed your owl the same amount. This is to determine her flying weight. I'll make a video on that soon because I notice it comes up more often when people ask me questions. Stay tuned, I'll make the video in a few days okay? Much love from Belgium :-)

    I found an owl under a tree and I brought it home for it not to be killed by dogs or cats.I have been feeding it chicken wings WITH the bones mushed up. it is the third day at my home and for some reason it doesn't want to stand up. Every time I try to feed it, it sits on the table, rather than standing up like it did the first day I brought it home. when I try to make it stand up it just sits again on the table. The first 2 days I had it, it was very energetic and , at night, it jumped out of the box I have it and started wandering around the house. Now it seems very depressed and tired. send help

    I've been a bird lover for *years* and have done my research every single day. I wanted to get a parrot for a long time. But my parents hate their screech since my whole family prefer a quiet home.
    And ever since I've found owls, I'm thinking of getting one. But I'm afraid that in the future when i get an owl, I won't be able to give it the attention it needs (birds are attention seekers but they're just SOO sweet and always melt my heart)
    Do u have any tips for that?

    • @EBYoungster
      @EBYoungster 3 роки тому

      I'm not a professional but if you can't give your bid the amount of attention they need if recommend getting a pair of possible so they can entertain each other but with two it will be harder to bond and train them than if you had one is still possible though this is for parrots not sure about owls

      Vegan Hippie oh and one more thing what is a good owl for beginners?

    • @skinbyrdable
      @skinbyrdable  8 років тому

      Shiny Moon A barn owl would be perfect. Next to the barn owl I would recommend the Rufous-legged owl and maybe The Little Owl but those are way more shy so you really need to imprint them very well.

    can you save the baby owl from bleeding out if a feather pin broke, or is it inevitable that they will die? or what about other types of birds that are good for beginners besides owls?

    • @skinbyrdable
      @skinbyrdable  8 років тому

      Yes you can, there's a medicin for it but I didn't have it around the house. I guess a parakeet would also be for beginners? Or do you only mean birds of prey? Owls aren't REALLY birds of prey because they don't have crops. But I call them birds of prey to point out that they can still be dangerous and need a lot of care. If you want a bird of prey, owls are the easiest. Especially barn owls, little owls and rufous-legged owls.

      If you haven’t got hemistop (blood stopping powder) in your home, regular wheat flour will do in a pinch! It will make the blood stop at the wound so that more blood will not spurt out.
      Birds have a very small blood volume to begin with, so it’s really important to do this as fast as possible if there’s an actively bleeding wound. Sprinkle the wheat flour onto the wound so it makes the blood clump up and stop new blood from leaking out.
