My wife and I live near a golf course. One of the golfers saw a baby Barn Owl floundering around in the grass. It had a deformed (not broken) leg and spine. We could only guess that it fell (or was pushed) out of a nearby nest. It would have died right there at the golf course if not rescued. Through social media, the golfer contacted my wife and asked if she could care for it until it could fly. So we agreed to take it in. Vets would not treat it because they are not licensed to treat raptors. This owl was a female and we named her Clover. She was so young she still had the white fuzzy feathers. We knew she would have no chance surviving in the wild. We made a home for her here. We fell in love with her and she with us. For the next four months we raised her the best we knew how. We fed her two medium size mice in the morning and two at night. We'd buy 100 frozen mice, thaw them out and warm them up. Clover would absolutely gobble those mice. Her deformed leg had a clenched talon. She could not catch and hold a live mouse with only one functional talon. Plus, her deformed leg always kept her off balance. After about four months, she stopped eating. Two days later she died on my wife's lap. She was barely breathing and finally took her last breath. She became such a part of our lives. She had such a personality. She loved sitting on our lap while we stroked her neck. She never bit us, but she would give us little love nibbles. She loved her life. Our hearts are absolutely broken.

Hello , Thank you for all great advise on how to bond with an Owl ...
Yrs ago someone bought me a Barn owl which had fallen from a bridge
All muddy like a dirty cotton ball I did my best to feed it even though it would hiss n cry
    I fed it very carefully.
He grew up quickly and ended up growing into a beauty , So when I saw it Start to jump n practice
Pouncing on imaginary prey I decided to take it to an Owl refuge 😔
Even though I didn’t want to I had to because I am from the U S and it’s illegal
    To have native birds .
Btw at the owl refuge they told they couldn’t believe how beautiful he was and in such good healthy condition
Your barn owl bought back so many good memories , Thank you

Hi Ms. Vegen, Greeting from Myanmar ! I got an owl, may be teenager, in a street flying away from the crows under the broad day light, hurt hitting against the walls and closed windows of nearby apartments. So I picked up and kept it with me - he had been sick for about 2 days and now recovered from sneezing ! Thanks very much for your very informative videos on owl care !

I am so happy I came across your videos. I am not only being entertained by you and adorable little Lookie but also learning alot. I live in San Francisco, California and it is illegal to own an owl here. I have an owl that I adopted but he lives in the zoo. Unfortunately when I go see him I cannot hold him or pet him etc... but he does respond to me when I am there. His name is Wilbur and he at birth, fell out of a tree and contracted west nile virus. He was rescued by hikers and sent to the San Francisco zoo where they care for him. He was cured of the virus but still has some neurological issues as a result so he cannot be left out in the wild. I wish I had him and could care for him as you do with Lookie. I will watch more of your videos so I can learn more . Thank you for what you are doing in educating all of us. You can see my Wilbur in my picture in his barn at the zoo :)

Hello! My owl came home when he was a week old. I was too scared of him at first (he was rescued, some kids killed his mum and he fell off the nest and my dad saved him) the only bonding thing that I used to do back then was feeding him and giving him water, now Cenizo is 1 year and a half old. He let me pet him and hold him but I don’t feel like we have a strong bond... and I would love to have one. He’s a tropical screech owl and I want to start training him. What do you recommend me? He doesn’t like when people touch his face or his stomach.

thanks for your effort in general telling your story raising your wonderful owl. I wanted to inquire about that owls has to be fed with cut rats or mice or frozen kittens. No way to be raised using plants or so .... because that would be against its nature , am i right ?
and because its true nature is predator right ?

I have a squadron of large white owls which live in a box in the attic. They get into the box via an 8" square hole at the top of the tower part of this old watermill I live in in France. I suppose this was built into the wall as owls are useful as guardians to keep mice under control....don't want mice around a mill with grain being stored after all.
I seem to have a mother and 5 younger owls but I think the mother may have a problem as she breathes so loudly I can hear it at night. Too many Gitanes?
I'll be converting the attic but will make sure the owl box is conserved as I like owls more than I like mice in the house.....and of course, being a Harry Potter fan, it does save on stamps.
Who needs sms when you have owls?

The most practical approach would obviously be accepting loss as part of nature, and that death is natural. Understanding grief is normal, etc.

This 'vegan hippy' certainly knows her owl lore.I'd guess the only way to bond with an owl is, as she said, to have it imprint on you, so get it as a newborn....easier said than done with wild owls. Five of mine are this year's brood, they can fly ok and have no fear of me.
About a month ago I was opening he shutters at night so I could see an electrical storm better, the sky was flashing but with no sound....and as i fiddled with the right side wall catch I heard a 'skeutch' noise and something grabbed and then released my3rd finger on the right hand! An owl had flown round the corner from the West wall where their door is and must have thought the wriggling finger was a mouse or lizard. I could quite easily have toppled out of the window and it's a long drop!
Beautiful things owls, if a tad hooliganistic. The young ones make the most incredible noises, bangs and crashes up their in the attic, like boisterous puppies with feathers and wings. And they are self-feeding, unlike puppies.
May the force be with you, owls.

Hi, so I happen to get a barn owl from a friend, I think it's around 1 month old, and the white fuzz hair's about to be gone, and it's really defensive, I plan to keep it for a few moment then release it in the wild, but I find it hard to feed and calm it down, do you have any tips, because it's really defensive right now, I'm afraid I might stress it out.
I really look forward to any tips and trick, thanks.
Ps. I plan to release it once it's bigger and healthier and ready to make fly.. I hope anyone would help me give some tips.. thanku

    • @rathmiron
      @rathmiron 6 років тому

I don't know if you still have it, but if your goal is to release it to be a wild bird, you shouldn't try to calm it down, you want IT to be afraid of you/humans. Of Course, stress is bad, so keep your interaction with it to a minimum, and keep it as isolated as you can.
