- This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Jim talks about his vision of transformation for development, drawing on his personal experience as an activist and an AIDs researcher. He shares why ending poverty is possible in our lifetimes and concludes that the poor will not always be with us.
Jim Yong Kim, M.D., Ph.D. is the President of the World Bank Group. Soon after he became president in July 2012, the organization established two goals: ending extreme poverty
by 2030 and boosting shared prosperity for the bottom 40 percent of the population in developing countries. Kim’s career has been focused on health, education, and delivering services to the poor. Before joining the World Bank, he served as Presi- dent of Dartmouth College and held professorships at Harvard Medical School and the Harvard School of Public Health. From 2003-2005, as Director of the World Health Organization’s HIV/AIDS Department, he led the “3 by 5” initiative, the first-ev- er global goal for AIDS treatment, which helped to expand AIDS treatment in developing countries. In 1987, Kim co-founded Partners In Health, a non-profit medical organization now working in poor communities on four continents. Trained as
a physician and an anthropologist, he has received several awards, including a MacArthur “Genius” Fellowship, and rec- ognitions such as one of America’s “25 Best Leaders” by U.S. News & World Report, and in 2006 TIME magazine named him as one of its “100 Most Influential People in the World.”

What an amazing presentation. Very inspiring and result oriented.
I love the idea about roads, this could brings more outcomes than giving each poorest household cash and treatment. Infrastructure can make the poorest to be accessible and could bring more than you can imagine. Some illness can be cured by being accessed to infrastructure and education. Thank you for nice idea and awareness about changing the world to be the better place.

I think the poorest people would benefit more from skills transfer rather than just treatment.
He, along with Dr Paul Farmer, put in place the facilities for locals to attain jobs, be trained in healthcare and for children to be educated in Haiti. He agrees with you. But treating the poorest is just as important as that. They go hand-in-hand I'd say.

+Halsdas Yes it is easy to imagine that this were true, the World Bank being analogous to the Iron Bank of Braavos, where primarily decisions are made based on return of investments. However, I would encourage you to look beyond the cynicism of others and more into your own actions. What can you do to put yourself in a position where you can make a difference in the world?

If you hope you don’t want to be misunderstood, you are advised to show respect for hard-working people like Mr. Kim, by not writing “but simultaniously being aware that he is just a prety flower fed by a pile of sleazy manuer”, which misleads people and spoils your true intention.
