    An extraordinary singer/actress speaking honestly and fascinatingly about her art and her approach to what she does. An appreciative word is due to Charles Rose for asking the right questions and turning this filmed interview into a proper conversation ; she seems very comfortable with him.

    I applaud Dessay for giving such in-depth, eloquent and sometimes even brutally honest answers in this interview, even when the interview wasn't really good.* The things she said about opera probably offended some people who work in the industry, but I agree with them; and everybody needs a good-faith stomping on the toes once in a while to keep up the good work.
    *(I think it's not a good interview, because the questions are all quite generic and Charlie Rose sounds as if he's reading them from a list instead of engaging with what she said.)

      I loved her here (in this interview) because, as you said, she was brutally honest (she's french and it means a lot).... I also love that opera wasn't her first love but she try to do her best in order to be recognized and appreciated. Long life for Ms. Dessay!!

    Her life story is interesting. I guess every musician has a story to tell. Mine was hilarious. When I was a child I liked to perform, so we would make theatrical performances for parents in the hood. Then you get on a professional stage and play or sing for your audience. Then someone notices that this kid is very talented and so they either take you or not. I always thought of myself as overly untalented, so was very pessimistic. But to sing and perform at the same time like her is hard. It mainly involves lots of emotions. You can see many opera singers tear up during their performances.

      she had her moments, but it didn't come naturally to her. directors had to really push her to do something with the character rather than just stand and sing. she was known for "emoting" on stage rather than acting - very common in the opera world because from a singers point of view it's like, did you come to hear me sing or watch me act? and if you said both then they'd quip, then go to Broadway - you're at the Operrrra, hun! lol

      No!! Dame Sutherland was an opera DIVA. I really love her on stage and her voice was perfect, but her acting was very limited. It's more gestures and faces than real acting.

      Mgls she’s okay. I think she’s made herself a great reputation. Her voice is out of this world. A lot of people in the US don’t really look for talent just whatever sounds bearable. It’s a shame. I live in the US so I’m familiar with it. Rock used to be #1 genre of music. 30 years later we have mumble rap soo kind of a downgrade lol

    Her interest in making opera ‘more’ didn’t include her vocal technique…

    • @jimbuxton2187
      @jimbuxton2187 9 місяців тому

      False comment. Her technique was perfect. That's why she was always on pitch. She sang too much and too often with her light voice. All opera singers have a vocal crisis. Callas only sang 5 prime years and at about 9 years her voice was in shambles. Desssy sang for 23 years in opera.

      @@jimbuxton2187 Callas already was singing for 10 years in Greece before she become famous abroad so her career wasn't that short

  • @crisha721
    @crisha721 Рік тому +1

    It's funny she shaded Joan Sutherland for "not being an actress" when actually she was an intelligent performer who didn't overact and expressed through her voice reaching to the last seat in the theater, with absolute technical mastery. That's why she lasted till the end in great shape. It makes sense to have seen Dessay end up with vocal nodules and a cut short career as she attempted to follow in the footsteps of Maria Callas. The difference is that Maria Callas was a phenomenon.

    • @jimbuxton2187
