This is the first song I played when I started learning bass. I love them to bits!!! Switchfoot don't need to be mainstream, they're great enough to topple mainstreams!!!
my guess is that there was a time slot that they had to fit the song in (like they have on most late night shows) that's why they took out the solo and salvation line. I'm pretty sure Letterman didn't tell them to take it out because it was religious.
Other than skipping the "Salvation is here" (which is one of the most excellent parts of the song), you've gotta admit that this is an AMAZING performance of theirs!! :)
Such a great performance of an iconic song. They should've never agreed to cut the "salvation is here" part out!! Just seeing this now. So upset. Don't let mainstream control you 😡
Yesterday they played show here in Slovakia...It was sooo amazing and awesome...Looking forward to the next show..... PS: Jon really looks like Kurt Cobain......:o)
@aTreeIsaTree Dude, Switchfoot does acknowledge that. I've met the guys, and seen them play, and they do everything they do to praise God. And remember the part "salvation is here" wasn't added untill they came out with the second version of the song, and following it they added a guitar solo, which is also missing in this performance. My guess is that this the first version they're playing.
The extremely sad thing about it is that they say in the song: "I dare you to lift yourself up off the floor" obviously by leaving the salvation part of this song out they were not lifting themselves off the floor.
@aTreeIsaTree They have been asked to cut that part out on television performances, it also happened at the hard rock live performance so it wouldnt offend anyone.
@MoreLikeMe929 also, jon has always said that their songs could work on two levels. one is the religious aspect of it and other times it could be a song simply about existence or love. switchfoot is great. and them being christian and not being afraid to share that makes me appreciate them even more. now, can we just all agree that they are amazing and appreciate the music?:)
yeah they're only allowed a certain amount of time on these talk shows, unfortunately, so they had to play it fast and cut out the "salvation is here" part.
they did. this is old news. they left theyre record label and created their own. hello hurricane was produced by the same guy who produced their first three albums.
Yeah, it's great.... Well, about not playing the solo, I agree with those who say they had a time limit cause they even play faster, it's much faster than usual...
Actully, when they signed with Sony the big guys said that they couldn't say anything about God or Jesus on stage or in their music, so they had to work around that... but hey, now they've worked back to being independt and release one of their most spiritualy deep albums to date... not to mention all of Jon's solo stuff
@Danz2003 after Jon sings "Where you gonna go, Where you gonna go?" he is supposed to sing a very high "Salvation is here." But he doesn't in this version because Letterman probably didn't want all the Christian-phobes to go nuts over it. Look up the music video for dare you to move and fast forward to 2:50 and listen to the end of the bridge. You'll see what I mean.
frontman's style completely defines early 2000's haha
they didn't choose mainstream, mainstream chose them. i could care less. they are an amazing band.
will always be grateful to have watched them live nearly 15+ years ago
Must’ve been epic
It was and they've aged well
Beatles, then Switchfoot.
We love you Drew!! You are missed.

Now 20 years now and it is 2024 and The Beautiful Letdown is being celebrated!
The extremely sad thing about it is that they say in the song: "I dare you to lift yourself up off the floor" obviously by leaving the salvation part of this song out they were not lifting themselves off the floor.
he's gorgeous.
dam sooooooooo rock!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ahh Lovely performance..The mix wasn't bad (for TV), and the dissonant guitar part @ 2:12 makes my toes curl!!
yep,he is..
Jerome Earl Fontamillas a Filipino American musician. ROCK ON! \m/
this is fuckin sick
@aTreeIsaTree They have been asked to cut that part out on television performances, it also happened at the hard rock live performance so it wouldnt offend anyone.
It's all about the music.
@MoreLikeMe929 also, jon has always said that their songs could work on two levels. one is the religious aspect of it and other times it could be a song simply about existence or love.
switchfoot is great. and them being christian and not being afraid to share that makes me appreciate them even more.

From myself and the scars, I don’t know, how do I lift my self up off the floor
this is Super Tight.
yeah they're only allowed a certain amount of time on these talk shows, unfortunately, so they had to play it fast and cut out the "salvation is here" part.

☮️
up offffaaa the floor i love!!!!
Yeah, it's great.... Well, about not playing the solo, I agree with those who say they had a time limit cause they even play faster, it's much faster than usual...
@Danz2003 Yeah it's a double standard. To be honest tho, I was stoked that they got on Letterman's in the first place!
Actully, when they signed with Sony the big guys said that they couldn't say anything about God or Jesus on stage or in their music, so they had to work around that... but hey, now they've worked back to being independt and release one of their most spiritualy deep albums to date... not to mention all of Jon's solo stuff
DARE YOU TO MOVE ALL SON OF KING
3:09-3:11 made me shiver a little bit.
its faster because There ROCKING IT!! that simple...
@seifukusha If its what I think your refering to. Its actually on the keyboard/organ.
@flylikeagaysex if they have 3 guitars is because they know what they´re doing with the third one :P
@DonTDodson I've heard they've done that other times as well. Dunno why
@Danz2003 after Jon sings "Where you gonna go, Where you gonna go?" he is supposed to sing a very high "Salvation is here." But he doesn't in this version because Letterman probably didn't want all the Christian-phobes to go nuts over it.

the wiggles
It's totally okay. We all make bad judgements sometimes.
This version is a lot faster, pretty good thou
shows like Leno have something like a 3 min limit therefore the band has to rearrange the song to come in under that time or get cut.
i missed "salvation is here"
2022
Why did they not sing salvation is here? thats my favorite part :(
They were probably crunched for time.
@DonTDodson I noticed that too :(
hey man ur'e nice
Yep Tubong Pinas yan
i love it at 3:00
Que bien que suenan los muchachos! Pero por que tres guitarras?
1:38 what is that guitar effect? Its really cool. Boss PS3?
.... and since letterman's show told them to censor it. ;) Trust me, he can hit that note live.
Drummer seems to be rushing
WHATS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE RECORDED VERSION AND LIVE?
FUCK I CANT SEE ANY DIFFERENCE !!!!!!!!!!! rock for love , for peace GO SWITCHFOOT
time travel is real. damn
JON IS SO FRIGGEN CUTE HERE!!! but -gasp- why did they leave out the "Salvation is here" part???
I catch a ride to California on a plane
@aTreeIsaTree Oh please....
is the drummer crying in the background at 3.14?
