Dude learned to drum by playing along with Led Zeppelin songs with pieces of tree branches he used for drum sticks and playing outside because of how loud the drums were.
Ohh thata why Dave's drumming is so good. He was in a Punk band. I'll tell you what, all the best drummers I've met in high school were always drummers in a Punk band. Yeah the guitars riffs are simple but the drumming is always crazy.
At age 16 and had already developed perfect timing, over the top power and the ability to play just the right fills for the song. Which is to say he was already showing how he was going to be known as one of the best drummers ever in rock history.

I'm digging the Ampeg bass amp, and when the cord falls out of the guitarist's guitar! Is this a school? A church? Somebody's living room? This is the real deal of local hardcore shows in the 80s! That was my world!
He was clearly the star of the band without having to front it. Sorry for the others but they were more like a backing band for him. And this has nothing to do with what he accomplished after this.
AHEM EXCUSE ME, DAVE WAS NOT THE SINGER FOR THE SMASHING PUMPKINS THAT WAS CHRIS ROCK!!! DAVE SUNG FOR THE BAND CALLED BAD BRAINZ AND PLAYED GUITAR FOR THEM TOO! NOT TO MENTION HIS VOCAL AND GUITAR WORK ON THE QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE ALBUM CALLED KYUSS!!! Oh yeah he also was the bassist for some lame ass band called Nirvania?
Fun times, I remember being part of the Revolution Summer back in 85'. To my surprise in 91', I saw a band that went famous with a familiar drummer behind the kit.... Dave has been both a pioneer of "emo-core" and a famous grunge force!
DC was one of, if it not the hardest punk scenes in America. It's not a surprise they chose the fastest drummers. Check bands like Void, Jerry's Kids or the F.U.s and you see really tight drumming.
Max Hall dude I've played shows all over LA. From backyards to bars. From 2013-2016. Shit is a bit lame compared to this video. How the documentary Los Punks on Netflix views the scene is different compared to those actually in it.
Max Hall yeah yeah maybe a handful of bands are good. But most of them are just drunk idiots that made a band two days before the backyard show that was also set up two days before, then moved location the day of the gig twice and end up with no one there cause no one knows exactly where the gig is at.
I remember days like that back when I was in high school and college playing shows with so much energy like that! For me it was back in 1996 to 2004 and damn were those the best years of my life playing in bands at small live venues. My first band and show was a late 90's Hardcore band called Prosper and we had that fast energy, but it would then break down into heavy fucking slow pit moshing paces. Oh man the fuckin great memories. I just don't see any local bands or any teenagers or young 20's playing rock or anything that has a crowd getting into as much as the bands themselves, which to me is very sad. Punk, Hardcore, or even Heavy Rock needs to get a come back man!!!
Dave if you see this you need to come back to the outer banks NC bro and you are and will always be a beast on the drums man.. dude playing drums better at 15/16 then most people will ever be even compared to the talent today that's getting paid big bucks 😂 you are the best and beast of the beats my friend and we miss you around here man come do a show here
It’s almost unbelievable that this footage exists
0:09 Drummer from Nirvana meets singer from Foo Fighters for the first time
I can't believe for a second I went, "what, where's the drummer?..." 😂
"its dave grohl!!! haha"
Not first time
Dave Grohl didn't become a beast. He was born a beast.
that's the word that comes to mind when i see him drum. "beast".
any idea does he have a gym regime?
And that is a true testament to the power of coffee and being blessed with an incredible internal metronome.
Dude learned to drum by playing along with Led Zeppelin songs with pieces of tree branches he used for drum sticks and playing outside because of how loud the drums were.

haha oh no we was all over the place! but at least in time haha
I am not a big Nirvana fan but I could definitely say he was the best drummer from my generation.
er .... NOT
Haha! Good one bro
He's quite messy here. His technique is good but definitely not perfect
In this video Dave has been playing for around two years and he is only 16. This man is a god.
Wow
Dude, it's a harcore punk band... you don't need any talent to be in one of those!
@@Metal-Possum some biggest bullshit I heard
@Metal-Possum the way hes playing drums, yea he pretty good for 16
@Metal-Possum actual he does a gallop/blast beat has some nice fills hes a great drummer
It's crazy to think that dave grohl was an amazing drummer at that age
Damn he always had that unmistakable Grohl touch.
short reminder that he is only 15 or 16 in this video
Yea its not that big of a deal, I can do everything he can and more and I’m 15

I love his sticker covered drums! So young, so spazzy, so fast! I love this.. I see young bands play like this today. All energy and speed.

Dam he is a born bad ass. He beats the sht out of those drums. Self taught . Awesome video . Thanks
Dave says: "HI MOM!" (2:29)
And proceeds to play a kick ass drum line
Incredible footage, thanks to some kid who was smart enough to bring a video camera! Or this wouldn't exist. That's when life was real.
that was dave
I think he says "Hey mom" once
theres a reason the camera is on dave alot of the time holy shit i would be in awe watching my friend play like that
Even back then his timing is flawless. Tempo for the most part is in sync. And you can hear the kick drum !! Just a God even in his younger years
Either the tempo,is flawed or it's not. You,can't have it both ways.
young grohl on drums. Absolutly amazing!!!
Who is here because he/she has read Dave Grohl's "The Storyteller"?
that's why I LOVE UA-cam...
Me too! Awesome book! Currently pg 84, I can’t put it down!
Reading about this right now in his biography! Daaaaaaaaaave
Same that's how I got here
Chiara Fattore I didn't know he had a biography.
I need to go to the bookstore
Same dude
Such a young man with the best timing on his kit. 🥁👏
Dude was always a monster on the kit.
He was one of those kids whose future confirmed success.. so gifted
Damn ! He had serious timing instincts then .......
You hear things that came later with Nirvana and Foos. His playing was already developed. Amazing.
That's kinda duh?!
Dave only took up drums because the previous drummer sucked.
Such a monster on the kit. Fucking awesome.
we all played that way in 1980s punk pock days , no big deal
Well, clearly it was a big deal cause look where he is now. Dude was a monster on the kit.

Playing because it is what he was born to do! This is amazing footage!
This boy was born to rock.
Awesome! This scene reminds me of my days working for Gussound, working with a dude named Jim (RIP) at DC Space in the late 80s.
He is that beast at that young age. Man, he was born for it.
This is absolutely brilliant footage of a young Dave Grohl who would go on to be an icon and a legend in music.
Who?
...?
Such a beast at such an early age
I’m not going to tolerate some hardcore snob insulting Dave Grohl ever again...
They are just jealous and without actual songwriting talent. Anyone can play fast power chord songs.
He was clearly the star of the band without having to front it.
Sorry for the others but they were more like a backing band for him.
And this has nothing to do with what he accomplished after this.
This is the same location as the Dain Brammage show a few years later. Dave also played drums in that band!
This was 5 years before he joined to Nirvana.
what a force! totally loooove :)
Legend.
I was there , they were bad ass!
Bro what was the song called that they were playing it sounds fucking awesome Dave was a beast he still is!🤘🤘
