If you are new to the world of DSLRs or mirrorless cameras, you may have tried to take a photo using the built-in flash in a relatively dark situation. Most likely, the resulting image was relatively standard ... subject took a straight-on harsh flash. Flash can do much more for you photography.
I am a fan of going without flash when possible, but sometimes a flash is needed for various reasons ... freeze motion, extremely dark situation, the desire for low ISO, etc. The built-in flash on most entry level cameras is relatively limited but serves a basic purpose. I demo the built-in flash on an entry level camera along with a budget speedlight which can be used to easily bounce flash and capture unique lighting.
This video is geared towards new users with entry level cameras (i.e. Nikon D3300, D3400, Canon T5i, T6i, Sony a6000, a6300, etc.), but may help any user new to flash photography.
The Neewer Speedlite 750 ii for Nikon can be found here: amzn.to/2iYHvK7 - Наука та технологія
I have a Nikon D3100, a cheap Amazon Basics speedlight, cheap diffuser like the one at the end of this vid, a Dynex tripod (almost the same as your old tripod) and a kit lens, and let me tell you, your series has more relevant information for me than anything else I've watched or read. I constantly find myself making notes from your videos and trying everything on my own. Keep it up man! Thank you!
Thanks for a very informative and great tutorial. Been watching many flash tutorials and yours was definitely the best so far.
I was very impress with the way he shows folk how to anything with photography. His instructions are very clear and concise, and simple, step by step unlike most others. It is easy to understand the way he demos and bring you back to the basic. Don't get me wrong, to be good on something , you must understand the basic completely, even when you're good as it , sometimes you still need to go back to the basic to refresh and testing your knowledge. Mr. RealWorld is very consistent on every video he made . Thank you for doing such a great job, you're truly a great teacher.
Thanks for the post/feedback Lam and glad to be of help!:)
I ended up finding this Neewer speedlight flash. I couldn't be happier, thanks for the recommendation!
Thanks for the post/feedback!:) If you get a trigger system, you can shoot the flash off camera which can be lots of fun as well:).
Not very many in detail videos on the Nikon D3400 out there. Your channel has been very helpful on how to use my new camera as I am new to photography and this is my very first DSLR. Much appreciated!
Hello Artem - welcome to the channel and thank you for the post/feedback!:) Glad to be of help and more videos on the way:).
Artem Ast
Thank you for this! I really appreciated your step by step with each modifier - and the TTL explanation!
Thanks for the post/feedback Karen and glad to be of help!:)
This was GREAT information, and now I’m even more excited about my Speedlite that arrived today! Great examples, and appreciate the practical tips. Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge!
Thanks for the post/feedback and glad to be of help!:) You can have a bunch of fun with flashes - take a look a my freezing water vid - ua-cam.com/video/X7BpqczoJ7U/v-deo.html
I've watched a few of your tdy and I must say you're explanation has helped me tremendously and I thank you.
Thanks for the post/feedback and glad to be of help!:)
Such a good video, thank you. Clear and to the point 👍
Brand new to the photography world, and you've just upped my game so much. Thanks boss!
Glad to help/inspire! :)
I love this guy, so glad I found the channel. The demonstrations are crucial for my understanding. Reading, even with diagrams confuse and frustrate me. I can do it, but it's like driving to work in reverse. Much more effective getting my hands dirty. Oh I see!- this little thingy moves this way and causes this to happen....Thank you sir.
LOL - thanks for the feedback and glad to be of help!:) I strive to make photography and technology understandable ... to break it down in simply and easy to understand terms/logic. Once someone begins to grasps basic concepts, creativity will flow:).
Appreciate the advice! Really excellent pro advice.
Popping up the flashlight in the beginning of this video made me laugh.
I’m addicted to your videos. Learning so much about my D3400 thanks to you.
Thanks for the post/feedback Mickey and glad to be of help/inspiration!:) Stay tuned as I have more vids on the way:).
Man, the production value of this video was on point! I really appreciated how you did your opening and closing dialogue, at least to my perception, in one take. That showed me you knew your material well, and it was easy on my eyes without having to see a video that is constantly stuttering from constant retakes. Your source material was excellent and I enjoyed your camera hacks with the tissue and tin foil. In closing, excellent video! PS: Your audio was excellent. In your previous videos, it had either too much bass or too much treble.
Hello Peter - thank you for the post/feedback!:) I have admittedly fought with my audio quality in post processing ... after various tweaks over a handful of different videos, I have started to dial-it-in:). Thanks again for the feedback!:)
Thank you for this video! I was asked to do an indoor wedding reception and panicked because I know what happens to my images in a setting like a dark church rec hall. I bought a flash and this was incredibly helpful to explaining about flash in general and what it can do. Time to practice!!!
Thanks for the post!:) Ahhhh yes, indoor receptions - good times but challenging for photography depending on available light:). The key is to open the aperture and raise the ISO in order to get a fast enough shutter to stop motion.
Not new to flash but I stumbled onto your content and I wanted to say bang up job. I like your content and style. New sub.
thanks for the post/feedback and welcome to the channel!:) i have not posted in almost a year but plan to get back into it:).
I just want you to know have taught me a lot with your videos on the Nikon d3400 thanks for sharing.

Thanks for the post/feedback!:)
You're awesome! This helped me a lot thank you!
After all these years, the tinfoil trick made me change my mind about my pop-up flash. It's not completely useless after all. Thank you!
LOL - i know the feeling:). The pop-up is nice to have in a pinch and a bit of foil or tissue paper can go a long way:).
Great information, thank you!
This is great! You solidified my confidence in using flash for outdoor portraits. I will be purchasing the recommended equipment provided in your videos. Same camera. I subscribed as well. I appreciate this a lot! Great content!!
Glad to be of help Jordan!:)

I wanna thank u AAAALLL the way from sweden for the info about the nikon D3400!
Thanks for the post and welcome from the United States!:)
I bought the godox manual Speedlite. I didn't know anything about ttl until after lol. I like how your video experiments with different materials and angles to show the end results. Very informative and to the point. Thank you
glad to be of help!:) TTL is nice when the flash is attached to the camera. when using off camera flash with triggers, manual mode is the way to go:).
Exactly the information I was looking for. Well delivered and easy to understand. Thank you so much! PS - That couch, though!
LOL - thanks for the post/feedback and glad to be of help Joel!:)

WOW thank you so much, was so frustrated yesterday when taking and indoor photo and the flash didn't seem to do it's job correctly, now i know i can set it to my liking and the toilet paper really works well. Thank you so much!

Thank you! I was looking into purchasing this for my Nikon D3400 love your videos !
Thanks for the post/feedback Carlos and glad to be of help!:)

Excellent video. I learnt a lot about using the flash, direct the light which I had no idea of. Thank you very much.
Hello - thank you for the post/feedback!:) Flash can be used to create some great photos when used in a creative fashion. I plan to create another video showing how to freeze motion with flash using flash triggers and the D3400.
Thanks for all the info you share in your video’s, being new to this hobby your video’s are so helpfull . Fun to learn watching you and you explain extremely wellturing tjis “hard to learn” hobby into an easy going not to expensive hobby.
Thanks for the post/feedback Eric and glad to be of help!:) Many entry level cameras today are fully capable of taking great/awesome shots ... all it take is a bit of knowledge and experience:). Enjoy the ride.

Thanks for the post/feedback Sambor and glad to be of help!:)
Subscribed after checking out a couple of your videos. Great work, great delivery and I like that you don't make snooty videos with $4000 cameras. BTW did you go ahead and make the other videos you talk about in this one? Flash modifiers and all that?
Thanks for the post/feedback and glad to be of help!:) I am not certain I ever created a related video - good idea though:).
i been using the tissue paper trick for a couple years now...I thought I was the only one who did that...great video
Thanks for the post/feedback!:) The tissue is a great trick which works well in a pinch:).
Thanks for the great tips 👍👍
very nice video, thank you !
great presentation
keep up the great work
i shoot with sony, canon and nikon bodies and they are all great cameras that give excellent results, however my sony SLT A mount camera bodies have two major features that lead the pack, first the Electronic viewfinder that allows you to see the finished product before you actually shoot the image which opens the door for many many other features and second is the body stabilization...........i shoot for pleasure....THANKS FOR ALL YOUR HELP, IT WAS VERY NICE OF YOU...
Good video,thanks.
Thank you so much for your video ❤️❤️
Glad to be of help!:) Follow me on Instragram ( instagram.com/realworldpicts ) if you like:). I just started the account and plan to post more picts soon.
I have the nikon d3400 and recently bought myself the voking VK750III TTL camera flash speedlite. I have been using it just on-camera so far but am looking to take my flash off-camera (mainly to light subjects from behind). I was planning to buy the Altura wireless flash trigger for Nikon w/ remote shutter but I am now hearing that the D3400 is not compatible with this. Do you have recommendations on what systems to use for off-camera flash for the d3400? Thank you.
Another great video! I always find myself going back to your channel for training and inspiration. I have a couple questions on the speed light if you have a second. Is is possible to have it as a always on light source with different power settings while doing that? Does it use a bulb or led? Thanks in advance!
Thanks for the post/feedback/question Travis and glad to be of help/inspiration!:) Unfortunately, no ... flash units are created to provide a high intense short burst of light for a very brief amount of time. You might consider something like this - amzn.to/2J4nEct
Best photo to me was the one with the flashgun angled up and behind you.
Hi! I have a d3400 and just bought godox v1N . I am not able to trigger the flash frok my camera . No sure why that is happening. Any suggestions are appreciated. TIA
I had a sigma flash that you couldn't control on the flash, after watching this video bought this flash you recommended, got it for £35.thanksfor your awesome video
Awesome and glad to be of help Andy!:)
1:20 lol I so did that years ago. First time I came around a video that showed this trick. I all so used paper as a diffuser and to lower how bright the flash is even covering half of the flash with paper if flashing directly on the subject as a fill light so I can get the back ground light in the photo.
lol - works well!:)
Thank you , you are the best for beginners
Thanks for the post/feedback and glad to be of help!:)
Awesome vid. Thanks for the tips.
Thanks for the post/feedback!:)
Mark, my wallet loves you :D
I might be getting a package with an identical flash (or two), I just haven't pulled the trigger yet.
It's a neat, and cheap package with remote trigger, cords and diffusers - And it's even cheaper buying it on Amazon compared to local prices for just a single flash by metz, sigma or whatever.
Also found out they make a solid looking "knock off" version of the Kenko Extension tubes, so I'll give those a try as well :D
Can't wait to finally try using a flash but it might also get me to take pictures while inside.
All the lighting I have sucks, so flashes might help - Especially off camera flashes :D
So: Thanks for the unintentional video showcasing what seems to be a great product haha
well i went ahead and bought the flash in the link for The Neewer Speedlite 750 ii for my Nikon D3400 . i appreciate your videos its helping as I am a beginner
Thanks for the post ... i have two of them which i have used over the last couple of years without issue. They seem to work well in my opinion and I plan to stay with them:).
Really thx for this video
2020
Your video helped me alot man
awesome and glad to be of help!:)
Helpful video.👍
I have a t6i and was wondering if altura was a good flash to get?
Great videos. I'm liking my old D3100 again. Greetings from Germany.
Hello Georg - welcome to the channel and thank you for the post (from the US)!:) I have dusted off old cameras before and had lots of fun. After covering many of the basics, I plan to create additional videos venturing out into different areas at different times of the year:).
Great video! Just one point of clarification: when you shot with the Speedlight, you set up the camera on S priority? It happens a lot with me that when I shoot at the Auto setting (on the camera) with the external flash, the built-in flash on top of the camera pops up anyway, and both flashes fire. I guess the S or M setting on the camera should do?
Thanks for the post/feedback/question Paul:). The built-in flash should not activate in full auto mode if you have an external flash connected. If the flash is not on or not fully seated in the shoe, the built-in flash will activate. Shutter, aperture, and/or manual modes will work with an external flash and not activate the built-in flash. If shooting in shutter priority and using an external flash, keep the speed below the max sync speed which is typically around 1/200 of a second.
Wonderful video!
Nice!
awesome, just bought the exactly same flash today and your video same time, tickity boo,
Glad to be of help!:)
This really helped. My first amateur photo gig is coming up this weekend. 🙏
Glad to be of help and good luck!:)
How did it go? 🙂
one of the best video thanks for sharing
Thanks for the post and glad to be of help!:)
Very Helpful!
Glad to be of help!:)
Just got my Neewer 750 ii with the FC-16 trigger strobe today!!! Can’t wait to play with it.
NICE - let me know how you like it!:) Lots of fun can be had with the combination:).
Very nice information 👍
is sb-800 compatible with nikon d3400, if isnt, whats your model of external flash. Im new user of nikod d3400
sir, please make a video for vertical shutter for d3400 i think that is interested too.
As always life gets hectic (major health stuff) when we buy new stuff sometimes. After using this flash for a very short bit, I found I had already forgot more than I knew about it. So I always head on back to RealWorld :-) Nice little refresher and I even busted out the tissue paper and foil I had in my bag from first watching this to follow along with.
Im curious if you ever decided to take further look into this with us as far as S1 goes or S2 and firing the flash with the built in flash if one has no trigger on hand or heaven forbid dead batteries.
On a side note, when the video was over I set a guitar case up against the wall with a very mean shadow of it. Using the flash and messing around, I was able to soften up the image (light) and grt rid of the shadow the case was giving off. A nice walk around the room from different angles made for great learning adventures as well.
As always very much appreciative for you sharing with us. Hope all is well in the great Hoosier State. Take care and we'll catch you on the next one.
P.S. Leaf changes are coming in the Shawnee! :-)
Thanks for the post and hope you doing/feeling well:). I do the same to refresh my own learning as well:). Interesting to play with flash from various angles and intensities.
Thanks for your videos :) Very interesting with a good structure. Greetz from Germany :)
Thanks for the post/feedback Sebastian and welcome from the United States!:)
Great tips- thanks bro
glad to be of help!:)
Are the new external flashes triggered the same as the older ones used on 35mm cameras? I have a slave shoe for my vivitar 283. Will it work on the speed light?
Hmmmm ... great question!:) I do not have any older flash triggers available to test, but I am not overly optimistic:).
Great video thank you
Thanks for the tips.
Glad to be of help!:)
Very good video. Thanks.
Thanks for the post/feedback!:)
Very nice video. Thank you. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Thanks for the post/feedback!:)
Can you please help me about which godox/yongnuo external flush is compatible for nikon D3500 ? I've mentioned godox/yongnuo only because these company's flushes are available in my country.
Hmmmm ... you might consider the YONGNUO YN560 IV
brilliant
thank you great tips using flash and speedlight . and now i have a model that sits still lol
lol
Do I have to fix a certain setting on my d3400 cause when I snap the picture the other built in flash pops up still
If you are using a speedlight, the built-in flash should not pop-up. If it does, ensure the flash is properly seated in the hot shoe:).
When the camera is in manual mode and I set my aperture, iso, and shutter speed to how I want it for lets say an indoor setting....in my viewfinder the exposure compensation is usually underexposed but if I adjust to balance exposure to zero and take the picture with the speedlight it is WAY overexposed. Should I be ignoring the exposure compensation on my camera when using my speedlight and just focus on my preferred settings and the result I get? Thanks
Thanks for the post/question and you are correct!:) When you are in manual mode, the camera is not aware of the flash. Set the camera how you like knowing the flash will fire and compensate for what the camera believes will be underexposed.
Thank you so much for your response. I'll keep watching your informative videos....very helpful!
What do you think about the altura ITTL Flash AP N1001?I can’t do a separate purchase coz the shipping is too costly.I’m not from the state
Thanks for the post/question!:) I have used a variety of products over the years include various ones from Altura. I am currently using flash triggers from the same company and have experienced zero issues. There flash units are solid as well ( amzn.to/2rIHWPp ):).
Dude, you freakin ROCK!! Question, I just purchased the Neewer 750II Speedlite for my D3400, how do I use the light remotely? Like set it kn a shelf or tripod and still use it with my camera??
Glad to be of help!:) If you want to use the flash off camera, you will need a trigger. I have a video that talks about triggers which can be found here - ua-cam.com/video/DvpsqFGAG00/v-deo.html ... I also created a few videos in which use off camera flash that might be of help - ua-cam.com/video/N_dExtbZfu0/v-deo.html
