The training curriculum has changed so much it would surprise you. The Army getting so much new equipment in the last 20 years and the struggle to find the perfect way to train a new generation of Soldiers, it changed 3 times while I was there for 4 years😅
Been driving a semi for 4 years. Would love to join the NG and drive an Oshkosh but got medically disqualified for a collapsed lung in high school. Great video.

I’m a 88M, here I am struggling trying to alley dock with my future civilian job FedEx( stick shift truck). Finished my AIT April 2020 so I haven’t practice at all with the 915 in my National Guard unit 😤 16T A58 2020
Unfortunately, backing a trailer is a perishable skill and has minor differences between different trailers especially depending on the trailers length. Practice makes perfect so anytime you're in a truck with a trailer, take a few minutes to find a place safe to back it up and give it 20 minutes of your time to practice backing in
One of the things to keep in mind is that a mirror image is not a true image. It is an angled reflection which each eye sees different. This is called the "parallax effect". The mirror image will always be seen differently then a pair of eye looking directly at the rear of the trailer. Additionally, you have no depth perception with mirror use. The longer the trailer the more the parallax. With some practice you'll learn to compensate for it, but you'll never get rid of it.
Welcome to the Army and the channel! I am finishing editing slowly on videos but whatever you need to see let me know and I can even post a quick vid to help clarify anything. Good luck at AIT, you will do great!
No need for an alley dock for a HET. The M1000 HET Trailer is for hauling heavy equipment. It is not suitable for mating with a dock. The turning radius for the M1070 is like half of a football field. These trucks and trailers are not conducive to tight maneuvering. Motor Pools for these vehicles are generally set up with pull through parking.
Unfortunately, it's not a step-by-step process, it's a skillset. There is no way to say back up 18ft, turn wheel left, back up 10 more ft, straighten wheel, then proceed backwards until complete. The trailer has many variations that effect what happens each time a different operator moves it, how the terrain is where your practicing, if you have the wheel truly straight, etc. You have to know how to react depending how the trailer moves and that's what the video and your instructor's are there for.
The trailers at AIT are 41ft long with 3 rear axles so it'll be slightly different but nothing you won't be able to adjust to with your experience after a few times driving them🙂
Being nervous is a good thing, keeps you focused. Just remember, if you lose sight of the back of the trailer, turn right. Too much angle makes it turn faster so watch the passenger landing leg. Turn toward the trailer to straighten up
We sure do!🙂. If it has wheels, 88M can be trained to drive them. Buses, semi trucks, gun trucks like the JLTV, MATV, MRAP, and HMMWV are all in an 88M's field of operations.
lol, the Army used to have Car Companies made up jeeps, M715's and M880's. The 839th Trans at Ft Bragg was a CAR Company. They drove the XVIII ABN Corps staff around in TMP sedans in garrison and used the tactical vehicles for the field. One platoon of the 839th was airborne qualified. They were assigned to the 774th Trans Bn, then the 7th Trans Bn under the 1st COSCOM until deactivated. Anyone, even grunts and DAT's can drive HMMWV's. No reason to waste a trained motor transport operator on these vehicles.
A calm mind is a focused mind. Control your breathing and don't let negative thoughts control the confidence you approach the task with. Breath smooth and just keep telling yourself all the things the instructors taught you and that the angle controls the trailer. Good luck, troop! Welcome to the corps!
Amazing commitment and initiative to look ahead and seek further education. Troops like you always do much better because you do the research to prepare and gain the confidence from the extra information you collect like tools in a tool bag. The instructor's out there will guide you in all you need just make sure you ask the questions no matter what it is you want clarification on.
