Hi, my name is Merrill Kazanjian. New York City is an amazing place to go metal detecting. We have lots of parks, colonial history and great beaches for beach detecting. I have gone to all five boroughs of New York City To Metal Detect and beyond. I also currently own 16 metal detectors. I want to have the best and I want to help you choose the best as well. I was a Garrett dealer for many years and started getting concerned about what they were offering to the public, I didn't want them to go down the path of Whites and Tesoro so I called them and explained my concerns. They had just come out with the Apex and I said to them why didn't you make it water proof, the competition is blowing you away in price and features. They told me "The company is exactly where we want to be" that's the kind of logic that will get you in trouble. They need to pay more attention to the competition.

The Notka Simplex is SUPERIOR to any Garrett product. This is what they are doing. Some of the big channels on youtube (Using the Garrett Detectors).....Are fake channels. They by views....likes....subscribers. I honestly think Garrett does it for them. (I am sure you know who I am talking about)......you will see a guy using a Garrett Detector get 80 k views in 4 days on a video...and you look at the comments and they have less than 300. It took me a while to figure it out.....only because I also have a channel. What Garrett is doing is buying fake views for channels.....some of the big ones on here...so they can market and sell their detectors. I doubt these guys making these videos even use a Garrett detector when they are not making videos. I have an Apex.....and the Simplex just blows it away.

Great review, I agree, I’ve used it for about 7 months and I don’t regret using it at all. I think it gets a rep as a newbie machine by those who paid for a more expensive older machine. It’s more than a newbie machine. My favorite part is the accuracy of the pinpoint. Have a great week, and merry Christmas!

Having ruminated on this video over the last five hours, I have some additional thoughts.
The price is affordable enough that the machine is almost disposable. A person could buy if for finding that item they dropped in the yard, or for a one-off weekend. I would hope those machines then get distributed into the hands of potential new hobbyists.
It is inexpensive enough that one could purchase one of these for a ute and provide a positive impression of the hobby rather than the disappointing experience of the toy models.
Your review of the machine is perhaps enough for me to go down into my mother's basement, find the circa 1975 Treasure Hawk (which is the last metal detector I used in about 1980), throw it into a dumpster, buy this machine, and actually use it instead of only watching metal detecting porn.

Learn and Use your detector to the fullest and it will surprise you.. Over all if I only could buy one detector to start with I would go with the 540.. Salt water beach hunting is what I like..

@@tomelner when I recently figured it out it's like this... When you find a deep SILVER or Cooper it'll have almost if not all depth bars maxed out... It's the highest of tones and it sounds imo like a violin high pitch and it's REALLY neat actually... And your numbers will be mid 80s and up.... These signals aren't easy to find so be patient. I've noticed you'll dig lots of false positives my max sensitivity and really tiny targets can also do this. I swear this machine impresses me more I learn about it. 2ft coppers is insane! My last Copper was almost arm deep. Crazy. My oldest to date as well.

there must have been a conversation when they developed the simplex+..."it has to be as good as, or better than, the atpro"...I waited to buy a water machine until after the apex was released, hoping it would be a water machine....I still wish that garrett said, "our new detector needs to be better than the simplex"...you also didn't talk ergonomics...the simplex is hands down more comfortable to swing...the best thing I've done that helped me to become a good detectorist was buying the best headphones I could and listen and stop watching those vid numbers...small clean edged singals...dig it....for the most, part vid numbers tell you what not to dig, not what to dig....especially on deep targets

Another quality detector is quest x10 which I've been swinging for a couple months now,. I have the 9"by 13" magic coil on it. You can run this around higher EMI areas with high gain,,this machine gets super depth, can smack a quarter at 10" really well, dime and copper at 9" well,,and even deeper if you learn to decipher it well. This machine is 199.00 and has pretty much same features as simplex. But I went for this one cause it DOES run very stable over 90% of the time,,it runs on 8 khz but goes deep on coins. The only thing that I have not figured out yet is real world target separation which I have not paid much attention to yet,,but in old coins it's already paid for itself. I mainly search for deep coins in residential older home areas where emi is usually troublesome. I think the x10 is a sleeper.

Truly appreciate that Barry! I own both the 600 and 800. There is very little difference to be honest. There is an extra frequency on the 800, Bluetooth headphones and you could configure recovery speed, iron bias and such on a scale from 1-8 rather than 1-3 on the 600. I own both and in terms of detecting capability, there is very little difference. If you buy through Kellyco use my code NYC at checkout and you will get 10% off.

I agree BUT!..The simplex will actually get you deeper with better vdi if once you hit a target you sweep over it at a medium speed, yes it will respond with quicker swings but if you want to hit a target deeper with better vdi then trust me, a slower steady level swing side to side over the target once you get a signal.

Blame Merrill... I now have a Simplex - my first detector, since mid August because of Merrill's channel and Simplex reviews!
I am learning all the time but basically, I am out often (now winter here) and even down at the beach, I have had success. The key is LISTENING to your machine - and not setting the sensitivity too high for starters. Flick between the modes to establish if the signal is repeatable...
Most of all, I blame Merrill for countless hours of FUN!! And yes, someday I also want to own an 800.
I have had loads of fun making videos... and in my way also sharing my learnings!
One BIG learning - the interaction between the Simplex and the Nokta Pointer... took me a while to realise just how they interfere with each other - ie, yes, you mute the Simplex but I physically have to place my detector at least three meters away when using the pin-pointer! It could be only my setup because I see others use their pin-pointers right next to their detectors... but hey, maybe there are others out there who have wondered if their pin-pointers are bust?
Sorry for the longwinded comment - in Merrill's defence... he only markets FUN! Thanks!😁😁😁

the reason why garrett says that they are right where they need to be is because they are making more than enough money on their sub-par products and don't have to spend time and energy making new and better products that can compete with the simplex, equinox, etc.

sale for 25 dollars they sold out because their son never used it and they lost the charging cable so me not knowing anything about detecting i took a chance gave them the 25 bucks it was in the box with the blue tooth headphones so i figured atleast i could sell the headphones for 35 bucks then i found the charging cable on Amazon for 22 bucks ... So i know i got a good deal but i got the simplex for a total of 47 dollars with Bluetooth headphones so i hope i will use it i think i will thanks to your vids i live in Massachusetts so close thanks for helping me learn i can't believe they sold it for 25 bucks i wanted to tell them it was worth more but they didn't have the manual or the charging cable i kinda feel guilty but that's how garage sales go nakto macro simplex+ with the Bluetooth headphones for 47 bucks what ya thing

Crazy, im getting back into hunting after a few years away. Traded a guy for a Garrett AT pro the other day. Been hunting my yard with it and having fun. Although it kind of feels like early 2000's tech, ergonomic wise and what not. Dont get me wrong, I LOVE the Garrett Bell Tone, found my first merc with a GTX550. So I was looking into what people are using nowdays with newer tech. I ran across the Simplex, and then ran across this video. LOL. I dont know if its worth it now tbh. I may as well swing the AT Pro. The audio on the Simplex sounds really tinny and plasticy. No?

Ah, the Land Ranger Pro was the Simplex before the Simplex was the Simplex. If they would waterproof the Land Ranger Pro and add iron volume it would be superior to the Simplex. One thing I loved about the Land Ranger pro is the individual VDI notching. First Texas should revise this model immediately.

Hello Merril, I would like your suggestion about what metal detector to buy. I want an all-purpose metal detector for mineralized soil and beach. I am looking for coins and jewelry (gold and silver) mostly. I want very good separation, very fast recovery speed and adjustable threshold if possible. Also, I have low budget, until 400 euros. I was thinking about Vanquish 540 (Multiple), B. H. Time Ranger Pro (19Khz), Simplex (12Khz) and Teknetics Patriot (13Khz). Would you choose one of these or something else and why. Thanks in advance.

Only difference I am seeing so far is picking up a lot of deeper coins with the nox. both great machines. luv your videos. Only had nox for 2 weeks and just learning it. AT pro should be selling maybe a tad higher then simplex or about the same. IMO

I'm New to Simplex,,, around 4:26 you where testing a quarter 8 " deep . simplex was bouncing between 46-70-76--84- 92, ? I don't understand how I'm suppose to tell if it's trash or not by the numbers, when they're all over like that. ?

    • @MetalDetectingNYC

That happens when the coin is on the side. But the thing is, YOU CAN NEVER TELL BY NUMBERS IF IT IS TRASH! The best way is by sound and even that isn’t perfect.

Hey Merrill what I don't see anyone touch on is....
What are the defining operations/settings for entry level like a simplex to intermmediate level to advanced level like the gpz 7000? I've seen soo many vids like this I can pick out discrepancies...like this vid...the ace was on zero mode...it's most sensitive/ deepest setting....the Plex you had on park 1 but later in the vid you say field is the plex's deepest mode, why wasn't the plex set there for the test then if the ace was on its deepest mode for a total un-biased test? Most review vids I've seen leave me with more questions than actual good clear decise thoughts by the posters. Might not be intentional, but I've seen things like this and more in many reviews posted.

I bought the Equinox 800 2 yrs ago after a long research period and love it... I then bought the simplex+ for a backup machine and after using it for a month, I sold it and bought another Equinox 800 for the backup machine... Looking at a ctx 3030 too... But not sure I want to spend that kind of money for a machine that is 5 yrs old when it might be replaced soon with a new model..

The CTX is more like 8 years old. Id go with another Equinox for a backup, or a Vanquish 540 propack if you dont need waterproof, the 540 is like a simplified Equinox, and the propack gets you a 12" and 8" coil.

Get a Nokta Makro Pulsedive pinpointer (you can get just the pinpointer for around $90) and it will connect to the wirless headphones. It is AWESOME, when you turn the pp on the audio automatically switches to the pp and you hear it in your headphones. Then when you switch the pp off the audio goes back to the detector. It is EXCELLENT!!
