Thank you so much. Most of the stabs were made with either an Elektron Digitone (for the glassy fm stabs on Curious Substance), Ableton Wavetable (for tracks like Sister City) or Ableton Analog (Nightscape). The effect chains were various eurorack delays or Ableton Echo (Echo is so amazing), maybe a phaser or a chorus in Ableton or in eurorack and of course a reverb. The reverb I used the most was surprisingly the vanilla Ableton reverb. It really excels at make those huuuuuuuge, dark spaces like in Sister City. There were no send fx for any stab, all chains were in the track. This allowed me to play the reverbs, delays and fx like instruments. I would record a number of takes and then piece together the best results. Of course there were compressors on the instruments and sometimes a spectral compressor for taming really unruly levels. I also played around with the placement of the fx in the chain to find interesting sounds. I love talking about this stuff so please let me know if you have any other questions.

I’ve experimented with various LFOs, mapping them to envelope amount, filter cutoffs, and bandpass filters, but I can’t seem to get the modulation right for natural movement. Also, how do you approach writing patterns for different stab layers? Do you start with a single stab sound design and pattern, then modify it for the other syncopated layers?
