I Met The Most Interesting Human Beings in Slab City

- Today, we join Rusty Featherstone as he makes his way through Salton City, California to visit the famous Slab City. Originally a military base in World war 2, Slab City became a magnet for retirees, nomadic youths, and artists. One of the first stops is Salvation Mountain, a massive religious art piece cared for by Leonard Knight for over 24 years. He then checks out the hot spring that serves as the communal bath tub and laundromat for many locals. Rusty then finds himself in a beautiful mermaid cove in the desert. Afterwards, we join Rusty for lunch as tries out the delicious local hot dogs, hamburgers and root beer floats. He learns from locals that there may be military gold in the surrounding hills and we get to hear from the perspective of a former real life bottle kid. After listening to the storied pasts of the locals, and getting a glimpse into the life of the people who call Slab City home, Rusty finds that this unique place is far from how some describe it. Rusty finds that Slab City is not lawless, and in fact home to many artistic and kind individuals carving their own paths. The sense of community is strong and supportive to those who choose to live in a creative environment.

does this actually mean something
Production team went crazy on this one. Shoutout Luke for the phenomenal audio selections throughout this piece. The music totally immersed me into the visuals and the juxtaposition of the 4x3 footage with the full frame cam was super cool, like seeing it through the eyes of a resident and the eyes of a visitor. Also the audio quality of all the dialogue was super impressive as it looked like it was pretty windy there. Thanks for a great watch, keep it up!
listening to the pod during work and having a new rusty vid for the lunch break is such a beautiful turn of events
the interview with the older guy at the end is so inspiring. to be driven away from your normal life only to later find your purpose in hosting open mics and bringing social life to a camp of outcasts is just so pure 👏
@domdom9515 builder bill is a gem amongst the rubble for sure
3 year slab snow bird here.
I always love hearing Builder Bills wisdom and insight. I've meet some of the most genuine, caring and giving folks in Slabs. Can't wait to be back in the fall
Rusty's giving Vice vibes. Good music selection too, y'all are killing the game.
do you know what the song at the very beginning of the video is? i can’t remember the name

We had a FANTASTIC time hanging out w Jimmy, Rusty and the fellas talking about our trip from New Hampshire...gotta love Scout the beagle, in the video of our RV. Jiimmy's music by the hot spring was fabulous as we dipped tootsies in the water. Thanks for a great visit guys. Carry on❤
Once again love the vid Rusty, you have a talent for connecting with people of all sorts. Keep up the good work with the series, really great stuff!
I love this series so much, hope it gets the recognition it deserves. Slab city looks like such a cool place to live.
How cool is easily my favorite series that the whole company puts out dude never stop
Rusty you bring the vibes the world needs right now brother. There are plenty of journalists doing this kind of stuff but your combination of humor and chillness is unmatched. I'm not personally attracted to males but you up there with Austin Butler on my hot list

Another one coming out in 45 min 🫂

Great video!
Genuinely informational. Your content continues to improve. Rusty and Will keep me from taking a ride on the Sewer slide.
so cool to watch this. i spent 18 hours or so out at Slab, East Jesus and Salvation Mountain 7 years ago. We camped a half mile or so away cuz we were a little spooked by an interaction we had with someone out there. But yeah it’s a special place. Didn’t have the grill running then but we did get to see an open mic night at the Range. it was summer so it was especially sleepy. my friend went back in winter time and apparently it was hoppin!
Can I ask what the Interaction was that spooked you? Would love to go visit
@@JammySaxon91 some guy came over and sat next to my friend and I and was friendly enough, but started asking a lot of questions about where we were staying that night, and then invited us to come camp and with him and his crew for the night just outside of Slab because “there’s lots of dangerous folks in here but we can keep you safe in our spot, we have dogs” and was pretty resistant to us declining his invitation. He had weird looking fingers.
thats about it, I wouldn’t be worried about going back, but I’d probably stick to our original campsite away from Slab. You should definitely go!
This was insanely good dude
“More flies, the better food” one of my favorite quotes of the decade
Riot intro is fire
Beautiful video.
So this is where Rusty’s been
Not everyone needs to be an intellectual. That needs to be an embraced mentality for a lot of the gen pop.
Next time stop by the Slab City Soup Kitchen… the story continues ❤
Between this docushort/review series and the 60 in 60's, this man is becoming the backbone of FB
Cooking in a hot spring for 3 days is INSANE
Best series on UA-cam is back, let’s go‼️‼️‼️
that was beautiful
Riot being the opening score secures Rusty’s spot as chillest white dude
I love Rusty's face at 11:15 when the old bloke mentions his run ins with the police
I watched this vids title change at least three times in the last hour, whichever one of you is overthinking it, you got it 👍its good, this is good lol
This is life at its finest…
this was dope
My man is so fucking hungover/probably still drunk/day drinking in the beginning of this video, rocking it. Also the person adding the music literally has my playlists and record collection at their house lol. It's all my favorite music, even weird obscure shit.
Interesting video
I Love this
That old hippie goin on about the military gold sounds like the one from the Vice piece
this was the quickest 14 mins of my life
There is no direct relationship between good food and flies. :)
yay!
Come to Friday Beers for Angus and Cullagh, stay for Rusty.

Christopher McCandless spent some time here, from the book/movie INTO THE WILD
Can we get a list of all the music in this episode?!
These people need to start digging under the slabs and create cool closed off basements
I’m slabbed - post rowdy requiem fear and loathing hangover
U should hit Leavenworth, WA you would VIBE
Solar ovens, solar dish cookers, hyperadobe earth ships, subterranean structures for coolness, underground cisters, rain catchment systems. That is what these people need and what they should be doing......earth air tubes = free airconditioning $$$$$
Somebody give Earl his credit
You can also argue that the outside world is a big refugee camp for people who cant do well here.
Sick vif
Anyone know the song that starts at 10:26. So good great vid boys

Big rusty guy
do we have a music list? obviously heard the Earl Sweatshirt snippet at the beginning but I’d love to have a list of the tracks used!
Rusty, you should head to Tijuana next
