- Local Residents of Slab City Tour: I have been to Slab City several times. Mostly to drive thru, take pictures, and leave. Just for a day. Well, I wanted to explore the slabs in more detail, and to my surprise, Psi offered us a local's tour the morning we went for coffee at The Oasis Club. Hopefully this short documentary of our days there paints a better picture of this lovely place in the desert that so many call home.

From wiki: Slab City, also called The Slabs, is an unincorporated, largely snowbird community in the Sonoran Desert located in the Salton Trough in Imperial County, California. Located near the east shore of the Salton Sea, Slab City is 100 miles (161 km) northeast of San Diego and 169 miles (272 km) southeast of Los Angeles. Slab City is used by recreational vehicle owners and squatters from across North America.[1][2] It took its name from concrete slabs that remained from the abandoned World War II Marine Corps barracks of Camp Dunlap.
The area that is now Slab City was the artillery training range[3] for the Camp. It was first settled by a few veterans who had worked at the Marine base. Current residents refer to themselves as Slabbies while tourists are called Normies.[4][5] The two individuals who had the greatest impact in the starting of the current settlement were Leonard Knight who created Salvation Mountain and Charlie Russel who built the first art installations in the area called East Jesus.[6]
Slab City is widespread, roughly 640 acres of public land.[7]
A journalist who visited this area filed this report in October 2019:[8]
"Slab City is part artistic commune, part snowbird getaway, and part refuge for druggies and squatters ... No property taxes, no utilities or other normal civic dues exist here.
She also found a free lending library and The Range, an open-air nightclub with "lights, amplifiers, speakers, and a stage ... Beaten up chairs and couches are scattered around for seating" where talent shows were being held on Saturday nights". There was no sewage or waste disposal being offered, leading to a very large amount of garbage and filth". There is no "food, water, healthcare, law enforcement available here" and the single communal shower serves all residents, up to 4,000 in winter. The so-called Salvation Mountain was a series of painted rocks, stacked three stories high, with bible verses and art work.[9] The settlement also has an internet cafe and a hostel.[10]
The community site is both decommissioned and uncontrolled.[11] Many residents use generators or solar panels to generate electricity. The closest body of civilization with proper law enforcement is approximately four miles (6.4 km) southwest of Slab City in Niland where the residents often go to do basic shopping. As a result, the site is described by its inhabitants and news outlets like Vice News as a miniature de facto enclave of anarchy.
There is one Airbnb accommodation in Slab City, "the Littlest Barn in the Desert ... a tiny house [with bunk beds] hosted by Rodney (Spyder)".[12]
The 2019 report described East Jesus as a "sustainable, habitable, constantly changing art exhibit in Slab City ... there are no utilities, no ties to modern life. Some of the [art] work here is truly fascinating and is made from many different and unusual materials.[13]
Thousands of campers and RV owners, most retired, use the site during the winter months. The "snowbirds" stay only for the winter before migrating north in spring to cooler climates. The temperatures during summer are as high as 120 °F (49 °C); nonetheless, there is a group of around 150 permanent residents who live in "The Slabs" year round. Some of these "Slabbers" derive their living from government programs and have been driven to "The Slabs" by poverty. Others have moved to "The Slabs" to learn how to live off the grid and be left alone. Still others have moved there to stretch their retirement income.[citation needed]
A January 2020 report stated that Slab Ciy was started by "transient, freedom-seeking people" who are now "all living off the grid in trailers, tents, lean-tos, and broken-down school buses in a remote patch of the Sonoran Desert". The report added that the community "has more than a dozen individual neighborhoods ... small camps of people with their own particular rules and culture". In an interview, well-known resident "Spyder" summarized the appeal of Slab City. "In a big city ... they have too many laws ... out here nobody tells me what to do".[14] - Розваги
Hey jax, its Shane, awesome video, sad but true, bad people burned my place down but i will be back because you can't keep a good man down, keep the faith and help your fellow humans out
Hi, Shane, I'm just a viewer of this good documentary, and I'm sorry that your penthouse got burned down. I was so impressed with your creative building skills. I hope you are able to rebuild in the future. I have been watching videos and docs about Slab City for the past two or three years, and I hope to be able to get out there to visit one day. Good luck to you, and I hope any rebuild you do in the future stands for a long time!
Hi Shane, I was in awe of how you built your place. I'm so sorry to hear it was burned down. Wishing you the best, you deserve it!

It was hard to see in the video but i built a fort on the back of my pickup too but I'm at home now,in the house i built in the Adirondacks, riding out the quarantine and thinking building a treehouse but have been doing lots of gardening as well this year. One thing I’ve noticed about that town is there is A LOT of talented people there.
The bike shop guy is rad, I love how hes trying to do better after he said hes done a lot of wrong in his life. Big respect.
This guy in England totally agrees with you, He was one Cool guy …… I could listen to him chat for days, hope he and others have channels …..if they don’t I hope they will start some because they are really interesting people …..they are So Different from ya average 9 to 5 guy ……obviously.

I could not handle that singing with my morning coffee.
I really like all the documentries about, Slab City. The people are all unique and interesting, and I like to hear their stories. It's a hard life in ways, but they managed to go with the flow. I could never survive in the intense heat. God bless these people, especially the peacemakers. And their pets.
For sure , great video. Thanks for the view into another way of life .
This English guy gets what your saying about the heat, especially during most of the year ……I guess it would be like South Florida, I spent 10 weeks there back in 02 ……from November onwards and Wow it was still very hot for this Brit.
I would love to go spend a few months at Slab and then go to the RTR for the Van & RV guys in AZ in January.
I’ll have to check to see what the temperature is like in SC in say November 🤔
I don’t suppose you know if any of these guys in the video have a UA-cam channel??

I am more than impressed with the “Penthouse “, nicest build out there for sure. I’d loved to have seen how it’s all supported up that high. If I was to live out there, I’d definitely want that set up for sure.
Pulling the ladder up at night would be a nice safety feature to have available for sure.
I’m a slab city veteran! I lived there back in the mid 90’s when I was in my early 20’s.. it’s certainly it’s own place that’s for sure!! The Range is definitely new… They use to have swap meets down the Main road there…and I remember Leonard he use to ride his bike to town every day… Glad to see some positive changes though!! God Bless!
That water tower house is the first thing in slab city Ive seen that isn't a rundown pile of trash. It's actually very impressive. Looks like it was built properly, and what's more it's stable enough to support the weight of the building and it's occupants with a foundation thats only about 8 inches wide.
Aaand it burned down.
JAX. We hope you come back out of retirement and start sharing to your adventures once again.. gotta share back that you were a guide for me when I was starting off my skoolie build. You always surround yourself with cool people. I Can;t wait to meet you in person sometime. Keep on inspiring people !!!
My son and his friends (and friend’s Dad) went to see Slab City a couple weeks ago. My son came back absolutely humbled. He still tells me stories of the people he met, how amazing Salvation Mountain is, and how interesting the community is. Before this trip, I had never heard of Slab City. (I have no clue what rock I have been living under.) But the interesting thing is how this community continues to thrive! Amazing!
Lol... the place is gross. Good luck.

The vast majority of people that go to the slabs are snowbirds, who usually live in their RV's or trailers for the winter and head back up north in the spring, since its free to camp there. I visited Slab City for the first time in 2010. I had the opportunity to meet so many incredible people (including Leanord Knight). I also visited EJ for the first time. We were invited to come back and camp in East Jesus. What an incredible experience. This place opened a place in my heart for people. I still make it a point to travel and meet people from all walks of life and I have Slab City to thank for that. Thanks for the video!

I have to admit, I think I’m perfectly suited to Slab City. Who knows. Maybe some day. The art is stunning. How can you not envy this freedom of self? These people intrigue me to no end. I wish them all the best.
Yeah, found out about this place a couple of weeks ago. Though I have to reach retirement in 4 or 9 years in order to swing this kind of lifestyle financially. A lot of these people are or have been broken by life and are living out there to feel authentic, to be, there are less pretenses to live up to. I will definitely come round once I get myself ready.

Well done!! I have trouble with heights, too. That ladder looked a wee bit wobbly.
My fav Songs by Nakhon, Medicine for the People, is what they r playing! Love to c them live one day soon
From watching other videos about slab city, I gather that most residents come and go with the seasons... meaning they have elsewhere to live. For the poorest of the poor in American society, ( like those on SSI, etc.) it would be difficult to live in 2 different places during the year. Having a vehicle is also a must, to get water and other supplies from town. For many elderly and disabled, the temperatures and daily living would be too hard. But there needs to be alternative places from mainstream society where those in extreme poverty can live. Kudos to those who are forming such communities - I feel a need to get away from the city, but can't afford a place in the country, and because of my health issues I can't go off grid.
Great interviews!
I've Been to Slab city twice and have watched many you tube videos of it. Yours is the best I've seen. Thank you.

These people are definitely not main stream. They find like minded people in this place to form a community.
