10 Seconds From Disaster

- This is a twin-motor foamboard plane I built to try some long-duration flights. It would carry up to 30,000 mAh worth of battery (15 aH in each motor nacelle) and I estimate it would fly 1.5 hours, maybe 2 hours. The wing is 90" (three Armin wing sections, 9" chord) and the fuselage was 70" long. Control by APM and Dragonlink. FPV was 1.3GHz. Landing gear was fiberglass helicopter blades and foam wheels. It flew great....for a moment.
The main cause of error was my assumption that the plane was past that light pole, having launched my much-faster Ansley Peace Drone on this identical departure path 50+ times. By this time interval the APD would be well past and above the light poles and ready to circle around and put into a loiter until I could put on my FPV goggles. Too bad this time!
Don't care if u crashed happy to see u in my inbox😄
I have the same problem with these landing light on the runway. lol
Thank Otis you were recording. Makes it all worthwhile.
I challenge you to try it again, I bet you can't :)
Felt that pain in your moment.
Ahhh, sorry mate... Was the lipo ok? I'm guessing that was pretty expensive.... Well I suppose crashing is part of the hobby :(
Ed, I saw that pole jump in front of the plane. Everyone look closer, it moved and jumped back!!!!!!
bummer, its all good shouldnt take much to get back up in the air. looked like it flew very well, until claimed by the pole. thumbs up
Question have you built a ft bloody wonder with a tube fuse and a easy fold wing?
That sucks!
Maybe a consolation would be that your build methods are cheap and quick to get it up and running again. ??
The key concept here is don't fly planes near tall poles ;-D
Learned it the hardway
That was brutal, I've done that in a tree but the plane was ok in my case, when your not use to big airplanes depth perception is a killer..
Hehe... Glad to see I'm not the only one who likes pole dancing. Hope your electronics were all ok.
Hit a pole on take off in my first ever attempt at flying. Took off a bit wobbly, got somewhere close to a pole, then recalled some advice about how hard poles are to actually hit so shrugged it off and kept flying.
Worst. Advice. Ever. CLANG. :-)
Sorry, but I had to laugh. Thanks for sharing with us. I know I've ran into a few things I was sure I was past!
Disasters don't just happen. They're a chain of critical events. Unravel the clues, and count down those final... Seconds From Disaster.
(I'm sorry, I couldn't help myself)
The only way to be assure you will miss an object is to keep sky between your flying machine and the object in question.
I've built 3 of your Photons in the last few weeks.#3 was built because #2 is now firmly embedded in the top of a very tall tree at the edge of the park, a victim of my failed depth "deception". I shall monitor it's slow disintegration over the summer. My remaining 2 are beautiful flyers all the same. Thanks for the great design and good luck with your next flights.
Ouch. This is what I have my goggles half on when I take off planes. Just a quick nudge once airborne and ready to go! Cool plane, I made a fpv twin that carries a lot of batteries (video on my channel) but never flew for an hour! That's nuts. My fpv goggles would die!
I distinctly saw that light cluster lean over slightly ... lol ... but, seriously, there just is not enough visual information in the scene to make the call. I fly a 200mm micro quad in the park, line of sight, not fpv, between the trees. I've been trying to find a cue/clue to not crash into the tree trunks even only a few meters away ... not possible, crash more than 50% of the passes.
Question Ed, I went looking through your videos and don't see a video of this wonderful looking bird. Am I missing it somewhere or did you not do a video on it yet. Is this a New (2015) plane? or something from the past. Good to see ya back here on youtube.
Did the same thing recently with my racing quad (but slow) and not on the maiden (i was actually trying to train my depth perception) and not with a post but with a tree. Fortunately, only two props were damaged but i do get the problem of having thought 'well, this will fit nicely...' and BOOM.
Haven't hit the lightpoles yet. I have flown my Cessna foamy into the scoreboard and my Staggerwing into the bleachers. Something about athletic fields.
Ouch! I hate it when fixed obstacles such as poles and trees jump out and hit one of my planes! It just seems unfair! :)
I look forward to seeing version 2 success.
Sorry Ed, I feel for ya.
I just did that yesterday with my very first maiden of my very first store bought foam airplane. Ran in to overhead wires 3 times, ripped the landing gear off, ran in to the fence at full speed, Hit second base nose first and now the prop won't turn, motor or transfer case is out of wack. But man, did I have a great time.
Who the hell put these lights here lol
More glue, more glue :p
Sorry for your crash though!
No problem just build it back. That's why your way of building everything makes this a great hobby.
Yep, depth perception, happens More often to some of us older Guys, gets worse with age..lol...get Her back up Ed.. After a little tape job that is..lol
OOH a metal tree & we all know trees are magnetic.
More tape and foam board and you will be up in no time.
Kool plane
A couple feet higher and it would have been an awesome near miss!
Bummer you crashed it, but why not fly at an actual R/C field?
woha, shit happen :) Hopefully nobody hurt
Man that's a stinker !
It's almost like had you aimed at the pole then you'd have missed.
That makes me a little chicken as I have only a fraction of your experience.
But you're a real dude to show the bad days as well as the good.
The horizontal estabilizer is positioned to always turn to the right, see... so resulted in a error.
I can't get past the illusion of catywampus tail feathers. Another vote for a build video.
Rotten luck Ed! there's a telegraph pole on my flying field that has similar 'magnetic' properties ;-)
nice one Ed, did that same thing myself at a football field in Denver, my buddy laughed so hard at me. He even caught it on film!
Your great Ed!
ouch, ive done that, depth perception is particularly hard in fading light and i ended up having to scale about 50ft up a 60ft tree, that was a terrifying experience lol
yes those polls come out from nowhere.I have hit many of them.are you going to do a
build video for this plane and also how do you make your landing gear and mounted to the plane.can you do a short video of how you made a 90 inch wing
Damn that sucks:-( I've done the same thing unfortunately.
It was flying, looked like it was flying pretty stable, my condolences.
Hah, I just removed a wing doing that on a telephone guide wire. There's got to be something to blame it on ... sun in my eyes?
If it hasn't happened to you yet, it will. We all cross paths with the depth perception poltergeist. Happy flying!
Hi Ed my greatest fear is breaking a lamp and having to pay not only for it but labor to replace it. Which would be quite dear. Was there any damage to the Lamp?
That sucks! It looked like it was going to fly great.
My flying field has tall poles with large light arrays. They scare the hell out of me but I haven't hit one yet.
Yeah, this all looks very familiar. Sharing your pain brother.
Ouch that hurts first time I wached it look like the wing just broke off without hitting any thing
I feel your plane I mean pain. Done that more than I care to mention.
Flying smaller planes myself totally thought it was well behind the pole as well :/
Whoa! I guess that stuff does happen to everyone.
30 000 m.a. ? Donde cabe tanto? Cual es el peso?
Any updates on this plane? I'm looking to try out a twin motor setup.
At first it looked like it hit the first light, so I agree about the depth perception.
why does do the tail surfaces not look square with the wing?
wow, you can get fined for damaging the poll...
Ow my god.... I hate when these things happen. Sorry man.
Ed, What size motors and propellers did you used on this one?
A similar scenario happened to me and my very first Photon. I wasn't use to the size of the plane and, as you mentioned "depth perception", my depth perception was way off and my Photon was sucked into a rather large bush at full throttle, ha ha ha. Cool looking plane, Ed! Get it repaired and try again. I'd love to see the EA Product video of this plane.
Sad that this happened on the maiden. Would love to see how it flies again when you fix it. Embarrassed to say I have done this multiple times, even with multi-rotos, as I'm sure I'm not alone. Looks like a solid build even with the length given and how thin it is. What do we call this one? Thanks for the vid, Awaiting the new vid soon.
I hit a football upright last month....
I crashed this way 10 times, better luck next time:-)
oneplus.net/dr-1
Unlucky ed, I've had this happen to me in the past. Its a great looking airframe your working on. Keep up the good work!
Bummer! I too have been known to fly into a pole, tree, even a fence now and again, but I'm curious about the plane. How much did that beast weigh? How large were the motors/props? In the video was it carrying full battery payload? So many questions ( : Thanks for posting your videos- I've learned a ton from them!
I fly out of a field that's well lit. I know I have come close to a similar spectacular accident myself. Glad to see your still building. Looking forward to some new videos.
Doh!
I feel better now that I know I'm not alone ...
That hurts ,get taping!
Still a beautiful project. I hope to see soon new video with full flight. good luck 👍
Thats rough! Awesome looking plane though! Hope its fixable!
Ouch!!
I'll wait to see Version 2.0 ... And specs ...
I hate it when that happens!
If your not crashing, your not flying.. I've done the same with an old Playboy but it hooked a wheel and stayed up there. Results were the same in the end after the whole football team took turns at it, at my request.
66tbird1 skimmed over your comment, had to re-read "an old playboy...hooked...a whole football team took turns at it, at my request"
lol, that can be read out of context if one doesn't know what a Oldtimer Playboy is.
Yep, bin there done that, ha ha ha.
I call that "normal" ;) Damn depth perception!
just made my first peace drone but it seems to wobble on the roll axis, any ideas whats going on?
*****
It wobbles going strait.
***** What does reflex have to do with roll?
***** Its had reflex (elevons are parallel to the bottom of the airfoil) since the first flight so thats not it, besides, reflex on this plane is effectivley elevator.
Differential is only relevant when you apply input.
The hinge line is only relevant when you apply input
This is doing it in straight flight, when I leave the sticks alone. As well as when I apply some input.
Im guessing that your not understanding what the plane is doing?
***** You do realise that what you are describing is "elevator up" input don't you? Sounds like its you that needs to read up.
Bummer dude!!!!!!!!!!!!
Happens to the best of us.
Ed I'm having an issue. I'm trying to get in to the rc plane hobby for three reasons. 1: I think it'll be fun once I learn to fly and 2: because as strange as it sounds I'm terrified of flying "in an actual plane" 3: I bought a durafly f4u and crashed it. Fortunatlly only the prop broke. I built a smaller version of your Synapse design which looked ugly and failed do to my lack of aircraft building skills. I have 2 40 amp esc's, 2 turnigy D2826/6 2200kv motors, 5 tss-11mga servos, 6x4 props and some 3300mah 45-90c 3s batts. I would like to build a twin engine pusher but have no idea of a design. Which one of your designs would be suited for this setup I have or is it possible for you to desgn something for my power setup? Please help my f4u is collecting much dust 😢
Great tries, however most people make those mistakes. Try starting with a Cub from horizon hobby, it has SAFE technology, thats what most in the hobby originally learned on. You can find it in your local hobby shop, the best part is the also usually stock parts for it!
Do you think i can build one? Dont have the money to spend.
rasheed gregory I don't want to detract from Ed's incredible creativity in all of the designs he has produced (and his construction techniques and skills are awesome) but as an alternate to help you decide, join up at rcgroups.com and look at this thread www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1281056 ... this shows a really easy to build 'trainer type' plane that can be built very cheaply, and will fly on one of the motors you have ... full plans on the thread, videos of it being flown by Russ40 the designer. Just keep the build really simple as he has, as light as you can, and it will float along at a comfortable pace to get your hand in at flying.
David Clark A good bet would be a Slow stick from horizon hobbies, the last one I bought was 28 dollars with shipping, needs engine, esc and 2 servos and fun to fly.
nice crash
nice shot.
Fun Stuff...
Cool looking plane!
done that before
miss u😣
opps
Been there done that right into a stand of trees with a new $200 plane.
Thats why scratch building is more fun (to me anyway) it usually only costs some foamboard and a prop or 2 unless you really get it wrong.
TheLukey21 that's why I started scratch building. I had a 200 dollar plane once I wrecked in one day.
Henk Hatzmann and if you do like flitetest and make some sort of power pod then you can have multiple planes for not alot of money
TheLukey21
I only have 3 store bought foamies, I build all my other planes out of foam board...I like to experiment...it it flies goody...if not no biggie only $ or 2
David Smith you learn alot more as well, I remember building a low wing hotliner style plane and balancing it right side up (supposed to do it upside down) and the cg was off by a mile and it was just a pile of foam pieces after about 10 seconds but it was funny as hell to watch and all electronics are still working in other things.
