      The design is called a Prandt plane. It is usually very efficient due to low induced drag.

      G'day,
      Buggar !
      You beat me by a week !
      I remember back when the Liggetti Stratos was a "promising" new Ultralight, back in the 1980s..; before (like a lot of one-off Home-Grown Radical Prototype Designs), it crashed and killed it's Designer/Builder/Pilot...
      That used to happen a fair bit, back during the Golden Age (1976-84), when 2-Seat Ultralights were illegal, and everybody had to teach themself how to levitate..., as I recall it ; but we were all chock-full of Biggles-Fantasies back then, so it was an integral part of the "Death or Glory" side of the reasons for wanting to go flying with Lawnmower Engines....(!).
      If you Title-Search YT for ; "The 8Hp, 1975, Red-Baron Skycraft Scout ; World's 1st Legal Minimum Aircraft." ...., you can see the particular Aeroplane which begat that Golden Age ....(it taught me how to fly when I was 17, in 1978, when I was it's 3rd owner & the last person to have flown in it..., today it hangs in a Transport Museum because I didn't crash it...[!]).
      But, yeah, Vale...., Charles Liggetti, RIP....
      Such is Life,
      Have a good one...
      ;-p
      Ciao !

    Thanks, Ed, for taking the time, both with this contest and with all your videos. EA is largely responsible for getting me back into the hobby after many years away. For anyone who is thinkin' about getting into it, or those just getting started who haven't already, I highly recommend that you check out Ed's site and channel here on youtube. Great, great stuff. Anyway, was great to see some incredible ideas in the submissions for this contest. I definitely like the Pitcheron and the futuristic bi-plane, but the hovercraft plane was also right on target for the spirit of the contest, as is Mr Cuervo's mast-mount goodness. Clever. Good stuff throughout the video!

    Sir, I am nothing but impressed with so many aspects of your UA-cam presentations. You are an amazing teacher with your tremoundous articulation of speach and design concepts with engineering facts to back them. You have a natural ability to speak and present things very concisely so that things are very well understood. What's even more important, is that you do not overstate things making it boring or quite un-entertaining for your audience. As far as your design concepts, I have to say that they are the most amazing ones on UA-cam. I am a professional jet pilot as well as mechanical engineer. I exercise both these disciplines on a regular basis to make a living. Even with my experience as a pilot and mechanical expertise, I will gladly admit that I am constantly learning from you. Whatever you're doing to continue teaching this hobby, please know that I am one of your biggest fans and I encourage you to keep up the great effort! Regards, GF

    Looking forward to watch a video about the blown wing concept of yours. Quite interesting. I wonder if it has been done in the past in the rc world. A couple of interesting examples in the "real" world would be the US2 amphibian and the Hunting 126. Great job on your part (promoting and building!) congratulations to the participants, very interesting concepts. Very inspiring.

    #1 is most WTF, but not using your particular acronym. If it was keeping to the more common definition it would get the pints for sure.
    Pitcheron one is the one I like, as I thought such a control scheme could be used in a full 90° tilting boom quad-rotor. The support booms for the quad would be winglets, so how it works should be fairly obvious. Vertical flight config would be the usual quad motor power mix, but forward mode mix would be that of the "pitcheron", elevator, and differential power for yaw.

  • @bensteele1080

    first place goes to the first plane in the video second place is the biplane. My reasoning is because the first one flies using a futuristic lift mechanism versus the typical wing. the biplane was second because it was it's just a flying wing with two wings but all the other planes essentially used the same technology we've always used.

    I don't know how anyone can doubt that Mr Bill da pilot's Pitcheron is number one! Unless you pick number 9 (or number 2... or ANY of the others...)
    It was a wise move to state "Judging will be performed by selected members of the scratchbuilding RC community".
    I know that I would hate having to choose just 1... I might, maybe, could, actually, sort-of choose just one but I'd absolutely hate to imply that the others weren't as good - because they all show great great ideas... actually implemented.
    Hoorah to all of them and a hearty thumbs up too!

  • @grinninggoat5369

    Aircraft #1, by Mr. Cuervo, was a copy of one of several designs patented by Charles De Rouge of France between the late 1920's and 1940's. He called them elytroplanes, after the greek word elytro, the stabilizing fore wings on some types of flying insects.
    The particular model in the video built by Mr Cuervo was almost an exact copy of De Rouge's 1937 model except the model had ailerons on the wing instead of having steerable 90 degree outward half-rudders on each of the wingtips of the original manned aircraft thus, the model would not get the benefits (if any) of what De Rouge proposed to be a benefit of that particular elytroplane design which he claimed was "self-righting" in nose dives and "self-coordinating" in turns.
    In some other designs, De Rouge did away with the articulated rudders and made the tall boom flaps unsynchronized yet controllable in their opening and closing in relation to each other. In his earliest flying version, the boom for the flaps was nothing more than flaps atop a round thin pole. In other types of De Rouge's elytroplanes, he did away with forward flaps on an aft boom and placed a canard like aileron wing high above and forward of the cockpit almost vertical of the prop.
    Anyways, food for further experimenting if anyone was curious of the design.

    • @johnfredrick5448
      @johnfredrick5448 8 років тому

      Admittedly, I hesitated to submit it for this contest because it does not visually look like anything terribly unusual, other than the dual h-stabs. Whether or not it was fit for this contest depends on your interpretation of the criteria. Weird, innovative, or technological does not necessarily have to mean visually different. Most of the obvious criteria are met, in that it is built using EA methods, including multiples of the fuselage and Armin wing, and it flies exactly at it was designed and intended to fly (slow and exceptionally stable), demonstrating the required takeoffs and landings (and many more additional since the entry video was made). Between the dual h-stabs and the tail gear mounting, and its assembly/disassembly, it includes design characteristics that are reasonably unusual or "weird".
      That said, I did not at all expect my 2nd ever foamboard scratchbuild to win any contests, but not expecting to win should never prevent one from competing, and so i put it in. As an entry, it is included in the video (unfortunately linked to the original out-of-focus video i shared with Ed unofficially some time ago, rather than the much better overview and flight videos officially submitted for the contest, but no biggie). Regardless, participation in this has yielded a number of firsts for me, so I don't care whether I come in first or last. It was a win in terms of experience and a great, great learning experience in many ways.
      And finally, regarding some of the other entries, the creativity of people never ceases to amaze me. Well played by those who actually went with the visually weird and futuristic, and to those who pulled out old tricks in entirely new ways. I'm not at all ashamed to say that I thoroughly enjoyed getting my nether regions handed to me in this contest. =)

      I'd love to see a full build video, I thought it was a real nice plane which flies beautifully with some features I may try putting in to my future builds. May not have been the weirdest but it was my favourite of the bunch

    • @johnfredrick5448
      @johnfredrick5448 8 років тому

      Thank you. The videos sent in for this were actually my first foray into making and posting videos on youtube. Unfortunately, I didn't actually get the camera out till it was already built, so i don't have footage from the build process. There is an overview video on my channel though, if you haven't already seen it, along with the flight video from which the clips were pulled (his link is to an older video, as mentioned, when my camera focus wasn't working right). You could probably get a decent feel for how it was actually built from that overview video. I will say one thing though. While it worked out for the short term, I don't recommend attempting 1" folded tube fuselage for the tail booms. They were a PAIN to put together and really don't have the structural integrity to handle hard landings. I've since reinforced both of them with craft sticks and its much better now, but I'd definitely go with something a little more rigid and resilient for those, or maybe build them a little differently, if i had to build it again. ;)

    Thank you sir for the inspiration, after two attempts (thanks to your instructions) i finally got one build and here is the second fly (maiden flight was rough but as you will see in the link it still needs some adjustments) the wind was 8-10mph. Length 30 inches / wing span 36 inch with 1inch surface control.
    again thank you for the instructional videos
