    When you have the car off and turn the key to the run position (car is still off and the fuel pump primes), does the fuel pressure increase to ~40psi? Does it stay at ~40psi for 10min?

  • @chrisfix
    @chrisfix  12 років тому +7

    It is just one O-ring and you can clearly see it at 5:06 ... I would replace the O-ring because it is a cheap part and failure of this part could catch your car on fire... For now if you take the O-ring off, soak it with a little motor oil, then put it back on, it might hold for a little (to get to the parts store)... But leaking fuel is very bad so get a new O-ring asap!

    This morning I started mine up and for a split second I realized it wasn’t the same amount of cranks and it was really boggy… Drove it down the street, drove it back and parked it in the driveway. 20 minutes later I go to start it up and it’s just cranking now… No start, I was thinking maybe bad injectors but this looks easy enough to swap out…
    My question is, why/how did you know it needed to be changed? What were the symptoms? Mine has been running great, so much that the last time I drove it I pushed the hell out of it on an empty freeway and it did great…

I'm fairly certain it's not the fuel pump because I really don't want to drop the tank. (More hope than anything else).

    I'm planning on replacing this device. It already has stains on it and it looks like its leaking. I already done plugs, wires, rebuilt injectors, optispark and powdered coated the intake. On a 17 plus year old vehicle...this should be replaced as a general principle. Why? Because the car could catch fire over a $40.00 part. Once the part gets exposed to gasoline, it doesn't matter if the car has 55 or 200k miles.

    It can be a number of things... I would check a few things to get an idea of where your problem is... Check the fuel pressure with a fuel pressure gauge ($20 online). It should read around 40psi when you just turn the key to the run position and it should not bleed down. You should also check the wires. Run the car at night in the dark and take a spray bottle with water and spray near the exhaust manifolds. If you see sparks, you need new wires. That should be a good start. Report back!

    Well if you are going to change the wires, change the plugs too (I have a video on how to do that on the Vette). Is it missing when you put a load on it? Like if you are cruising along and then step on the gas hard, does it stumble? If so, it might be the optispark

    If there is a recall then the dealership has to honor it... Just go and tell them that you have a recall that hasnt been fixed... It could be the reason it shakes (missing due to limited fuel at the injectors) and it could smell like fuel due to the regulator as well...

  • @chrisfix
    @chrisfix  11 років тому +3

    It is definitely not a valve. All that thing does is hold the fuel lines in place. It is a clamp you screw down to hold the fuel lines.

  • @chrisfix
    @chrisfix  11 років тому +2

    I dont know the exact name but it is a fuel line holder. It holds the fuel lines right before it goes into the fuel rail... Maybe ask the people on the corvetteforum. Show them the video and give them the time. I am sure someone will know. Good luck and let me know if you find out!

    Chris, You are still helping us out with this video you did 10 years ago. These things develop odd leaks. Mine was leaking maybe 3 times over 3 months. I would smell fuel in the car for maybe 5 minutes and then go away. I thought it was a plugged vent line. Just checked the Fuel Pressure Regulator before checking the vent lines. Started the engine no leak. Pulled the vacuum line and it leaked bad on the non-vacuum side of the diaphragm. Thank you Chris.

  • @chrisfix
    @chrisfix  11 років тому

    One thing that comes to mind is that your injectors are leaking. This would cause the gas to leak into your cylinders and any blow-by at all would cause an excess amount of fuel to go into your oil. Plus, this would cause carbon build up on the plugs. When you start the Vette, if you tap the gas to rev it up quickly, does the exhaust make a popping sound? Leaking injectors can be caused by a damaged fuel pressure regulator, but I think it is more important to check to see if they are leaking.

    Thanks for taking the time to do this. I have a 94 Caprice wagon with the LT1 engine, and the factory manual is useless for helping this changeout. I had a wee bit more difficulty was well because the shoulder bolt/nut holding it on was frozen solid, so I wound up cutting it off! Replaced it with a makeshift 1/4-20 bolt and 3 nuts to make up the support of the shoulder bolt. Works great, !!!

    If we dont have a fuel pressure gauge, can we just disconnect the fuel pump relay and try to start car to release the pressure?

    • @blazeglitch
      @blazeglitch 6 років тому

      Terrance Williams pull the pump out while the car is running an it will stall an shut off. Let it crank a a few times an no pressure.

    i learned from your vlog that a vacuum leak leads to high fuel pressure, so if i check my spark plugs and they are clean, it means it doesnt run rich, which means fuel pressure not high which means no vacuum leak?

    What T wrench sizes are used to hold fuel lines and fuel pressure regulator????? Most from that era are upside down and have much harder access, and it's easy to see how hard they are to break lose. Once rounded out then views are going to have real problems. Always show tool sizes. Everyone knows the battery bolt size.

    • @chrisfix
      @chrisfix  2 роки тому

      I don’t remember off the top of my head for the corvette but that’s why I started to include sizes in my later videos!

    • @ronkosanovich6450
      @ronkosanovich6450 2 роки тому

      They really should be added to your video, as they're very important on hidden access on many vehicles. I haven't seen any mention in shop manuals. I'm pretty sure the fuel pressure regulator is a T30, but the fuel line bracket is only a guess. You see how hard they are attached in your video. Anyone with that corvette should be able to check the size, expecially since the bracket bolt is up on top.

      bracket is T25 and FPR hold bolt is T30. Both can be very stubborn to removed.

    Great video. Only vid that showed the clamp on both fuel lines had to be removed to remove the regulator. But I think the vid could've been even better if you showed, not only verbally, the sequence of connecting all fuel line/nozzles together and buttoned up. But thank you for these great vids, regardless.

      Chrisfix, the two parts clamp are held tight by one 6 point star bolt. The problem I have is the star bolt is upside down against the engine. I have to disconnect the fuel lines to get the regulator out. Is there an alternative way.

    Hi Chris, I have a 2001 Ford Taurus and it has the check engine light on. The fuel gauge does not work, it always shows "E" (Empty) and the fuel light is always on. OBD2 scanner and gave me a P0460 which is flex fuel sensor module. The part number is YF1Z-14A069-AA. I found a video which says that the flex fuel sensor is behind the radio. Do I need to disconnect the negative terminal of the battery to do any electrical work as this? Also do you know how this needs to be done? Thank you.

    • @chrisfix
      @chrisfix  9 років тому

      Steve Smith Yes, always disconnect the negative terminal when you work on electrical components to be safe (especially under the dash). I do not know the specific process for your Ford Taurus to replace the sensor (I never did it). You might consider getting a service manual which will walk you though it all.

    i saw that there has been a recall on the make and model of my car for the regulator but the tags are expired and you make it look soo easy on the video. the recall stated that the regulator was installed during manufacturing without a ring and clamp. where i see the regulator at there is most definately something leaking because it looks like dirty oil running down and also does this problem cause the car to shake violently while in reverse or drive and smell like gas?

  • @mike39648
    @mike39648 11 років тому

    I don't have a leak coming from my vent tube but I have alot of carbon build up on my new platinum plugs and my oil dip stick smells more like gas than fresh oil. My car starts fine, runs for 5 mins, then sputters and dies. After 15 mins it does the same thing. The symptoms I named earlier, would that be from a bad regulator?

    I have a 2002 Yukon 5.3 with an intermittent hard start mostly when its cold it will take like 3-4 seconds longer of cranking for it to start. It idles and runs perfectly just every so often it takes a little longer to start. It has a newer fuel pump around a year old or so. I did notice that I am getting a strange noise from the FPR similar to this video: ua-cam.com/video/R1bgiJVoNOc/v-deo.html I Also pulled the vacuum line to see if it was leaking but did not see any fuel coming out of it. I am tempted to buy a new FPR but don't want to spend 50 if it isn't the issue. Anyone have any similar experiences or advice?
    Thanks
