Of course I enjoyed this, being a Canon P user, but a couple of points: (1) That little rotating red dot in the round window does NOT indicate that your film is advancing… it will spin happily when the lever is advanced, even if there is no film in the camera at all! To be sure your film is advancing correctly, you need to watch the red line in the center of the rewind crank to make sure it is turning. The real purpose of the spinning dot: When it stops spinning during REwinding, you know that the film has come off the spool and it is safe to open the back. It also can be used for making intentional double exposures, by rewinding exactly one full turn of the dot before the second exposure. (2) I saw in the video that you are loading the P by putting the cartridge in the left chamber first, as almost everyone does, but it's much easier if you do it as shown here: Load Your 35mm Film Camera the 1960s Way ua-cam.com/video/GpPEKdJjcEQ/v-deo.html
Yes, that would be fantastic. Ideally a 35mm film camera. In the realm of mechanical watches, companies introduce heritage lines based on their archives all the time. I wish camera manufacturers would do the same.
They made the Canon M6 Mk2 in the same colors and roughly the same size. It's actually "my personal camera" which I take everywhere in my purse with the silver pancake 22mm
Yes, the 1.8 is great as well, and much more compact than the 1.4. Unfortunately, the one that came originally with my P was riddled with fungus and I decided to replace it with the 1.4 when I found a good deal for it.
I love my Canon P and use it with Canon 50mm f/1.8 lens. The only problem I have with Shueido is deciding what color combinations I like the most since they are all beautiful. Great video. Thank you for sharing.
Love the Canon LTM rangefinders. They're great as a Leica alternative and priced very reasonably too. I finally got the chance to buy my dream Canon rangefinder camera, which is the rare Canon 7SZ. With only 4,000 cameras made, the Canon 7SZ was the last LTM rangefinder from Canon and the end of Barnack style cameras utilizing the Leica Thread Mount until the modern Bessa rangefinder. It was the most advance LTM camera made during the time and the finder is the best among all older LTM rangefinders. The bright projected selectable framelines and the crisp rangefinder patch was almost Leica level of experience but without the hefty price.
I bought a Color Skopar 50 f2.5 a few years back, for a reasonable price. It went idle for quite some time, until I came to know the Canon P. Now they're glued to each other and to a Domo lightmeter, like siamese triplets. Excellent review!
I’m happy with the Canon 50/1.4 but I’m still considering buying the Color Skopar because it’s operation seems much more adapted to my shooting style (it has smaller focus throw, in particular). How do you like yours?
@@SimonGarnier it focuses very fast, on account of its short focus throw and finger tab. So fast, actually, that you have to slow down a little as the rangefinder baseline of the Canon P is short, making it a little easy to misjudge your focus point. All in all is my perfect companion, since it's the only model aside from de M3, that fits confortably (exactly) with a domo lightmeter in a chinese semi rigid box originally designed to store lens cleaning products.
Yes ! A robust and beautifully designed camera .... Also the Canon 50mm 1.4 is maybe my favorite lens . When I take out my M3 it is more times than not wearing the Canon 50 lens ...... I doubt my 'P' which I've had for about ten years has ever been CLA'd and it works just perfectly .......
Stunning camera. I had the chance to use one for a couple of months thanks to a kind friend that borrowed his camera to me. The P and a 50mm and you're done, you have it all for a great rangefinder experience. As you stated it's a great starting point for someone that has never used a rf. Beautiful camera and video! I have long thought that the Canon P is the best looking camera ever made. And that 50mm F1.4 lens is just amazing. I love using it for slide film. The mellow contrast is perfect for Ektachrome.

Good evening. After using the SLR'S by first Pracktia, and then after much Saving the money too afford My Cherished Nikon FM2N & F3HP with great prime lenses. I simply could not afford The Leica System. However, I now own 2 Canon P & Canon 7. I use the Original Canon 50mm f/ 1.8 & along with A Jupiter 12 which....Just manages to fit.Great Rangefinder's! And ,a much more affordable entry into The Rangefinder Style. Such a remarkably well made documentary/ video. Many thanks and Kind regards Colyn.
There's so much beauty in the simplicity of this camera. I, like many others, have wanted an old Leica for a while, but am not willing to sell my left arm for one. And probably also like many others, I searched for a cheaper alternative and landed on the Canon P. As a loyal Canon shooter for many years, I was quickly sold on getting one of these. This camera is literally everything that I want from a Leica in a much more affordable package. I even love the fact that it doesn't have a light meter. I feel like I'm training my "Sunny 16" instincts so much more than I ever have, even to the point where a light meter for casual shooting seems unnecessary to me now. I've seen those custom paint jobs, too. Such a tempting reason to get more than one of these! Mine is in immaculate condition, so I want to keep it all original. But the cool repaints are a good option for one that's got some miles on it.
Personally, I think Canon P is the best modern-looking Canon screw mount rangefinders. Canon 7 may be technically better, but I'm not a big fan of the big selenium meter on the top :D
Excellent video! I purchased a Canon P with the 50mm 1.4 last year. This has become my favorite film camera. Certainly the most beautiful camera I own, but also the best feel and handling. Easy to calibrate the rangefinder. The 50 1.4 lens makes beautiful images. One of the best values on the used camera market and you can still find excellent examples (camera and lens) for under $500 US.
Shueido, Cameraworks-uk, Enzo Patagonean are in repaint job and I'm sure there are a lot of more. They have all sorts of different services but I must say shueido is the most expensivest one. Enzo's job on barnack leicas is just stunning... Also Cameraworks Uk was doing other modifications like Hanta Black inner repaint for M leicas (for glare problem etc.). So check for price before deciding since you can get better deals for the same service guys... ;)
I’ve bought repaint camera from SHUEIDO before, I think the price depends on what camera model it is. For their expertise on Canon P and the quality for the paint, I think the price is quite fair to me.
@@hsien-huayu5966 I asked repaint for a IIIF and a VIOOH and they said the body repaint fee and brassing process plus leather skin replacement will be US$1400. and the repaint fee for VIOOH US$500... I literally copied and pasted what they wrote to me.
I just got interested about Canon rangefinders like a week ago or so and am now digging all information and thinking to get one for myself. So what a huge coincidence that this video was posted right now at this time! 🙂I see that basically all cameras for sale online right now are either from Shueido or they're located in Japan, but there are very few for sale in Europe. I guess that these cameras were originally made in a time before European (especially German ...) buyers really got into Japanese cameras.
@@SimonGarnier That’s right. A lot of the US cameras have a red EP stamp on them which was generally the export model sold at the military exchange. My 50/1.4 has that marking.

I remember that when I was young in the early 90’s, I wanted to buy a used Nikon F and during a visit to the U.S. I was overwhelmed about the much lower prices and massive numbers of secondhand F’s on sale literally at any camera shop. But it’s the same story there: in Germany, the original Nikon F went on sale when Germans still were sticking to the domestic camera manufacturers…
I paid £70 for mine, about 10 years ago, (which considering some of the prices I’ve seen the P selling for is a steal), in mint condition, from Japan. I use a Jupiter 2, 35mm f/2.8 lens, I also have a couple of Jupiter 8 50mm f/2 lenses which are very capable. It’s built like a tank, a real solid chunk of metal!
In 1959 US camera magazine ads for the P featured the P/50mm 2.8 as under $200 list price (though you could buy them for less in many large camera stores.)
With genuine Leica rangefinder cameras becoming more out of reach where M6 prices are approaching MP price levels and even a M2 or M3 now costs three to four times as much as you could get them for 15 years ago, attention turns to the Canon P. A Canon P will soon demand what you could get a Leica M2 or M3 for in the past. Insane.
@@Zetaphotography An M6 for $2,500 is incredibly cheap. A clean, CLA-ed M6 easily goes for $3,500 - or more. I am not complaining. I am covered. I already got my M3 and I bought a brand-spanking new MP from Leica (with warranty) in 2020. I just think it's unreasonable to buy a Leica M6 at the prices they're going for, I think people should rather buy an MP new from Leica.
@@weisserth There are ridiculously affordable prices for M3 via Buyee (Yahoo Japan Auction). Not long ago I saw one at about USD750, super good condition and had already been checked. Many things from Japan are much cheaper. The only deciding factor would be the customs cost; depending on which country you’re in, it could either be a blessing or a curse.

The early Cosina Voigtlander Skopar LTM lenses from the 90s are wonderful for the smaller Canon P and L cameras. I have 50/2.5, 35/2.5 and 21/4 and they all have a wonderful look and form factor on these bodies and have modern coatings. The 50/2.5 was the hardest to find in the US and when you do it's often as expensive as the 50/1.5 Nokton. So find a clean Canon 50/1.4 and enjoy it's Planar style rendering. The other Skopars are more common and generally under 400 USD.
I have the 35/2.5 as well (we used it for a few pictures in this video) and I use that lens a lot with my VT Deluxe. I could not find the 50/2.5 at a good price and settled instead for the Canon 50/1.4 for my Canon P. I don't regret it one bit, I love that lense, even though it's not the most ergonomic one.
@@SimonGarnier I like the 50/1.4 quite a lot. I wish it could be rehoused because I find the ergonomics maddening too. Might be time to draw something up for 3D printing!
I just got the 50/1.5 Nokton off FB marketplace, was surprised at the size on my Canon L2, but at the same time, it's lighter than my Canon 50mm LTM 1.8 in all chrome.
@@tomallen6073 The 21 and the 25 seem to have sold well enough to find on the used market. The 28/3.5 is much harder to find. If you find the 21mm with no finder you can do what I did and buy the TTArtisans one. It's very bright and large and only costs about $50 shipped from China.
I love my Canon P as a daily street shooter and a very good travel camera. I have the Canon 50/1.4 ltm but the Canon 35/2 ltm is practically glued to my camera as it's so good for street photography. That said, every time I use the 50/1.4 I'm so impressed with the quality and rendering especially for close-up detail shots. I doubt that my P had ever had a CLA in it's 60+ years, and since it had a few small issues, I invested in a very good quality CLA and the thing now runs like a fine watch. A good CLA to extend the life for many more years and for buttery smooth operation makes a world of difference. Also the original lens hoods help to reduce flare and improve micro contrast. I have the original hood for the 50/1.4 but stopped using it recently. For some reason, it has always annoyed me to see it take so much space in the viewfinder.
@@SimonGarnier Agree that it does create a fair bit of viewfinder blockage but if you can get used to that, it really improves the performance. It's a personal choice of course but yes I know, it's a bit annoying.
@@john_murch I think I enjoy the shooting experience more than the final images to be honest (I sometimes keep exposed film for months in my fridge before thinking of developing it). Anything that gets in the way of that, I tend to eliminate if I can.
I am canon p owner(18 months) , paired with a canon serenar 35mm 2.8 ( an equally beautiful and classical lens , (the Serenar range of lens for the most part look the part )) and a also a Jupiter 135mm ... its a beautiful and quality camera ... it costs £1000 + less than a Leica , its a bargain , that will not be a bargain for long ,, these cameras will get more expensive ... is ridiculous they can be bought for less than £200 .. I also have a doomo light meter , and it works nicely with the camera , really does fit the look and feel .. if you want a really nice rangfinder , you can do much worse than a canon p .. the lens choice is up to you from £30 Russian lenses to £3000 Leica lenses , ... the shiedo company make some beautiful options , I think they are snapping up all the p's ... I am so impressed with my P , am really thinking about getting a vi-l and vi-t too...

Personally, I like the Canon 7 better than the Canon P. I think the Canon P suffers from more hype and popularity right now, inflating prices the camera and making it a worse value. I like that the Canon 7 has switchable frame lines for 35, 50, 85, 100, and 135mm lenses. I think this allows for a much less-cluttered viewfinder when using the camera. I know that the built-in selenium meters on Canon 7 cameras may no longer work, or work accurately, so these may be of limited value. And that the presence of the selenium meter means that the Canon 7 does not have an accessory shoe for mounting other viewfinders or new shoe-mount light meters. But I still think the Canon 7 is the best value Canon rangefinder.
@@shoefantasia1412 I could not care less how "ugly" some people think the Canon 7 looks. In fact, being seen as "ugly" actually works in my favor because it means Canon 7 is cheaper by virtue of being less desirable. I'd rather buy an ugly camera that represents a much better value, than pay more for essentially the same thing with a prettier face. My priority is the bang for the buck, and with that in mind, it'll probably really piss you off that I use cheap Soviet LTM lenses on my ugly Canon 7.
@@shoefantasia1412ugly is very subjective, there's a lot more important factors if your interest is using the camera to take pictures instead of showing off. For that leica is a much better route anyways
Effectively, the Canon 7 becomes almost like a Canon P once the selenium light meter loses too much of its precision over time. I also find that the aesthetic of the P is cleaner without the light meter, but that’s my personal taste.
Not to be that person, but Pentax actually did release a LTM mount lens. It was a special edition of their iconic 43mm f1.9 lens. I think it would look quite fabulous on the P.

Some additional notes on the Canon P: FYI: The large viewfinder magnification on the Canon P makes the 35mm frame lines unusable for photographers wearing glasses as you cannot see them in their entirety, with potentially areas outside the frame lines as well.
Yes, that is very true. It’s hard enough without glasses to seem them all at once. Luckily for me, I mostly shoot with my 50mm lens, so it’s not an issue. And I use my 35mm lens with a VT Deluxe instead.
I shoot with a P, wear glasses, and have learned to cope with it. Just relax, look straight forward, and (key point) keep both eyes open. Thanks to the 1:1 magnification, your brain will superimpose the two views together, and the 35mm frameline will manifest itself at the edge of your peripheral vision. It works (mostly) - if you want to be positioning compositional elements at the exact edge of the frame, you probably shouldn't be shooting an RF camera anyway! If that doesn't work out for you, here's another little-known option: originally, viewing eyepieces for the P were available in five different diopters, and you could change them just by removing the set screw in the black plastic rectangular surround, shifting it sideways a bit, and lifting it off. Inside you'll see that the actual eyepiece is a simple round lens that is trimmed down and cemented inside the black plastic frame. I admit I haven't tried this myself (yet) but if you're willing to splash out a bit of money at your local optician's shop, I'll bet it would be fairly easy to get a custom eyepiece lens made to your exact prescription, so you can use your P (and see the 35mm frame) without using glasses…
I haven't seen your videos for some time cos I am not a subscriber. I ALWAYS find your videos to be of exceptional quality. I am afraid I have given up on film images. One reason is I am really not that good at taking images besides taking analogue images takes even more skills to produce more than adequate good-looking images, whereas digital images are not so much.
The Canonflex was a good camera, but quirky design. The lens mount was super fiddly, and the lenses suffered from mechanical issues which cut the production life short. The Nikon F was superior in every way, the SLR to own! The 1955 and later Canon rangefinders were truly superb. Not to mention innovative with great useful features and hinged back making loading far easier. Build quality is impeccable!
I find my Canon P is easier to hold securely over my Leica MP. Sadly, the swivel tip of the rewinding knob broke off of my Canon P copy. I got mine from Shueido. Beautiful tourquoise blue with brown leatherette.
Sorry to hear that. The rewind crank is beautifully designed but I agree that it feels like the weakest part of the camera overall. I’ll be even more careful now.

Only one thing that stops me from using my beautiful Canon P is that : if you don't look directly into the rangefinder (aka looking in with an angle) you might screw up your focus. It's such a shame because pretty much everything else about this camera is perfect
Weird. I don’t have that issue with mine. Are the RF patches misaligned by any chance? Mine was knocked off vertically for a while but it was an easy fix in the end.
As a long time Canon RF collector, let me add a couple of points. Viewfinder. It looses the complex and costly shifting optics finder common to the prior series of bodies and in the 7/7S. The result is a view cluttered with multiple frame lines, which is off putting. On the other hand, the semi-silvered mirrors in the more complex finder system tend to fade or flake over time, which can dim the basic view and impair the shifting frame lines. Pick your poison. Shutter. The P shares the fairly radically redesigned shutter also used in the 7 and 7S. The problem is that shutter operates under much greater spring pressures than the traditional Leica-type shutter design used by Canon in prior models. The basic operation is very durable, but over time the high speeds slow down to the point where they cannot be restored by normal adjustment. No repair parts are available, and nearly all repairmen will refuse to work in that shutter. The shutters in models VI and earlier are easy/cheap to work on and repair as necessary.
I used to find that the 100mm frame lines were annoying when shooting with my 50mm lens. But then I figured out that I could use them as approximate rule-of-third indicators and, since then, I have used them a lot to help me with my compositions (when the rule-of-third applies, obviously). I also rarely use my 35mm lens with this camera and instead use my VT Deluxe for that. Good to know about the slowing down of the higher speeds. I think that the problem hasn’t manifested with my camera (yet?) but I’ll certainly keep an eye on it now that you said that. Thanks!
@@AnalogInsights I had my CLA done in Japan (see my above comment). Everything can be restored according to spec including the shutter timings (as was done on my Canon P) and this repair business is even able to make custom parts if required. My repair was smooth and painless with good communication via e-mail throughout the repair process. They are ex-Leica trained and authorized technicians, JCH did a behind the scenes video on this business a few years ago, it's really worth a watch.
I have an L which has the gold color rangefinder patch and it’s held up incredibly well. Nearly as bright as my M. But no parallax correction in those models and that has stung me a time or two.

I wear glasses for distances, but close up I don't. Would it still be worth it the get the Canon P? Presently I'm still enjoying my Canon AE-1 and the Program.
Even in the 1970's, M-Series Leicas were way too pricey for this poor college student, so I searched Shutterbug Ads for the Canon P. It was sompletre with clip-on Selenium cell, 50mm f/1.8 Canon and brown case. It hasn't needed a yearly CLA that the M-Series Leicas seem to need, and it barely drew a second glance "on the street." Having saved money buying the Canon P, I spent that on a Canon 28mm f/2.8 and 105mm f/2.5 Nikkor lenses and film, instead.;)
In the 1980s and 90s, I was much into collecting and using Canon RF equipment. I never acquired a P. At the time, it was a lesser model but sold for a relatively high price. After I recovered from the mania, more recently the P was selling for practically nothing. Now with all of the hype, ala this video included, its prices are back up. As a collector, you should have a P. As a user, perhaps not the best choice. Why? The finder. It is the only Canon RF model which crowds its three frame lines into one fixed view, i.e., its view is cluttered and distracting. Not terrible, but far from the best available. It did let Canon sell the body more cheaply, but that cost advantage no longer applies in the used market. The Shutter. For the P, 7 and 7S, Canon introduced a new focal plane shutter made of steel foil. This presented a lot more mass to be moved, so the shutter was redesigned to higher operating tensions than previously. The result is that over time, the operating springs loose strength and the shutter slows. This can be adjusted to a point, but many of these shutters long ago weakened to the point where the high speeds cannot be adjusted to operating specification. I spent a lot of money for a CLA of my 7 with the best guy in the US for this work, and he gave me a table of the true operating speeds and told me to live with it. A true repair requires parts which have not been available for 40 years. So what to do? Consider a VIT or VIL. They use the traditional cloth, Leica-like shutter Cannon used for all models prior to the P. Easy to adjust; easy to repair; better view finder; and these days, not that much price difference.
No, the VI-T and VI-L use metal shutter curtains. The real weakness of the P is its low RF EBL (41mm); so really not usable with. 100/2 or 50/1.2. The 50/1.4 is borderline particularly at close focus distance.

I also have a Canon VT Deluxe which I shoot exclusively with a 35mm lens. I have tried it a few times with my glasses and it was fine. The viewfinder has 3 positions: 35mm, 50mm, and "precision focusing" (roughly 100mm I would say). I believe it has the same viewfinder as the VL/VL2 if you prefer a traditional film advance lever rather than the trigger winder of the VT.
For a 35 guy who wears glasses it is tough to beat a Leica M2. Failing that a V Series Canon (as previously advised) would be your best bet if you dont use a 100, if you do then a VI-L or VI-T.
Nikon was originally just an optics company so the early Canon's used Nikkor lenses. Only after the war did Nikon start to make cameras and Canon lenses.
Whatever you said is very informative and correct except the Taiwanese repainting service because they are rude and not responsive at all, their prices are also super expensive though.

I have a Canon P and love it. The Canon 50mm f/1.4 is a great addition. But I have a Canon 50mm f/1.8 that turns out some gorgeous shots, too.
Yes, the 1.8 is great as well, and much more compact than the 1.4. Unfortunately, the one that came originally with my P was riddled with fungus and I decided to replace it with the 1.4 when I found a good deal for it.
I love my Canon P and use it with Canon 50mm f/1.8 lens. The only problem I have with Shueido is deciding what color combinations I like the most since they are all beautiful. Great video. Thank you for sharing.

Love the Canon LTM rangefinders. They're great as a Leica alternative and priced very reasonably too. I finally got the chance to buy my dream Canon rangefinder camera, which is the rare Canon 7SZ. With only 4,000 cameras made, the Canon 7SZ was the last LTM rangefinder from Canon and the end of Barnack style cameras utilizing the Leica Thread Mount until the modern Bessa rangefinder. It was the most advance LTM camera made during the time and the finder is the best among all older LTM rangefinders. The bright projected selectable framelines and the crisp rangefinder patch was almost Leica level of experience but without the hefty price.
I bought a Color Skopar 50 f2.5 a few years back, for a reasonable price. It went idle for quite some time, until I came to know the Canon P. Now they're glued to each other and to a Domo lightmeter, like siamese triplets. Excellent review!
I’m happy with the Canon 50/1.4 but I’m still considering buying the Color Skopar because it’s operation seems much more adapted to my shooting style (it has smaller focus throw, in particular). How do you like yours?
@@SimonGarnier it focuses very fast, on account of its short focus throw and finger tab. So fast, actually, that you have to slow down a little as the rangefinder baseline of the Canon P is short, making it a little easy to misjudge your focus point. All in all is my perfect companion, since it's the only model aside from de M3, that fits confortably (exactly) with a domo lightmeter in a chinese semi rigid box originally designed to store lens cleaning products.

Yes ! A robust and beautifully designed camera .... Also the Canon 50mm 1.4 is maybe my favorite lens . When I take out my M3 it is more times than not wearing the Canon 50 lens ...... I doubt my 'P' which I've had for about ten years has ever been CLA'd and it works just perfectly .......
I only needed to adjust the rangefinder once. Never had any issue since. The Canon P is a workhorse!

Beautiful camera and video! I have long thought that the Canon P is the best looking camera ever made. And that 50mm F1.4 lens is just amazing. I love using it for slide film. The mellow contrast is perfect for Ektachrome.

I simply could not afford The Leica System. However, I now own 2 Canon P & Canon 7. I use the Original Canon 50mm f/ 1.8 & along with A Jupiter 12 which....Just manages to fit.Great Rangefinder's! There's so much beauty in the simplicity of this camera. I, like many others, have wanted an old Leica for a while, but am not willing to sell my left arm for one. And probably also like many others, I searched for a cheaper alternative and landed on the Canon P. As a loyal Canon shooter for many years, I was quickly sold on getting one of these. This camera is literally everything that I want from a Leica in a much more affordable package. I even love the fact that it doesn't have a light meter. I feel like I'm training my "Sunny 16" instincts so much more than I ever have, even to the point where a light meter for casual shooting seems unnecessary to me now. I've seen those custom paint jobs, too. Such a tempting reason to get more than one of these! Mine is in immaculate condition, so I want to keep it all original. But the cool repaints are a good option for one that's got some miles on it.
Personally, I think Canon P is the best modern-looking Canon screw mount rangefinders. Canon 7 may be technically better, but I'm not a big fan of the big selenium meter on the top :D

Excellent video! I purchased a Canon P with the 50mm 1.4 last year. This has become my favorite film camera. Certainly the most beautiful camera I own, but also the best feel and handling. Easy to calibrate the rangefinder. The 50 1.4 lens makes beautiful images. One of the best values on the used camera market and you can still find excellent examples (camera and lens) for under $500 US.
I agree. I never regretted purchasing that same combo and will probably never part with it voluntarily.
Yeah man can't agree no more. I grabbed mine for 430$ (although the Len is 50 f1.8) but it still turned out great.

Shueido, Cameraworks-uk, Enzo Patagonean are in repaint job and I'm sure there are a lot of more. They have all sorts of different services but I must say shueido is the most expensivest one. Enzo's job on barnack leicas is just stunning... Also Cameraworks Uk was doing other modifications like Hanta Black inner repaint for M leicas (for glare problem etc.). So check for price before deciding since you can get better deals for the same service guys... ;)
I’ve bought repaint camera from SHUEIDO before, I think the price depends on what camera model it is. For their expertise on Canon P and the quality for the paint, I think the price is quite fair to me.

I just got interested about Canon rangefinders like a week ago or so and am now digging all information and thinking to get one for myself. So what a huge coincidence that this video was posted right now at this time! 🙂I see that basically all cameras for sale online right now are either from Shueido or they're located in Japan, but there are very few for sale in Europe. I guess that these cameras were originally made in a time before European (especially German ...) buyers really got into Japanese cameras.
I believe that there is a fair bit of them in the US as well due to the American soldiers based there after WW2.
@@SimonGarnier That’s right. A lot of the US cameras have a red EP stamp on them which was generally the export model sold at the military exchange. My 50/1.4 has that marking.

I remember that when I was young in the early 90’s, I wanted to buy a used Nikon F and during a visit to the U.S. I was overwhelmed about the much lower prices and massive numbers of secondhand F’s on sale literally at any camera shop. But it’s the same story there: in Germany, the original Nikon F went on sale when Germans still were sticking to the domestic camera manufacturers…
I paid £70 for mine, about 10 years ago, (which considering some of the prices I’ve seen the P selling for is a steal), in mint condition, from Japan. I use a Jupiter 2, 35mm f/2.8 lens, I also have a couple of Jupiter 8 50mm f/2 lenses which are very capable.
It’s built like a tank, a real solid chunk of metal!

for the P featured the P/50mm 2.8 as under $200 list price (though you could buy them for less in many large camera stores.)
With genuine Leica rangefinder cameras becoming more out of reach where M6 prices are approaching MP price levels and even a M2 or M3 now costs three to four times as much as you could get them for 15 years ago, attention turns to the Canon P. A Canon P will soon demand what you could get a Leica M2 or M3 for in the past. Insane.
How does an M6 at 2500 reach MA 6000 levels?

I am not complaining. I am covered. I already got my M3 and I bought a brand-spanking new MP from Leica (with warranty) in 2020. I just think it's unreasonable to buy a Leica M6 at the prices they're going for, I think people should rather buy an MP new from Leica.
@@weisserth There are ridiculously affordable prices for M3 via Buyee (Yahoo Japan Auction). Not long ago I saw one at about USD750, super good condition and had already been checked. Many things from Japan are much cheaper. The only deciding factor would be the customs cost; depending on which country you’re in, it could either be a blessing or a curse.

The early Cosina Voigtlander Skopar LTM lenses from the 90s are wonderful for the smaller Canon P and L cameras. I have 50/2.5, 35/2.5 and 21/4 and they all have a wonderful look and form factor on these bodies and have modern coatings. The 50/2.5 was the hardest to find in the US and when you do it's often as expensive as the 50/1.5 Nokton. So find a clean Canon 50/1.4 and enjoy it's Planar style rendering. The other Skopars are more common and generally under 400 USD.
I have the 35/2.5 as well (we used it for a few pictures in this video) and I use that lens a lot with my VT Deluxe. I could not find the 50/2.5 at a good price and settled instead for the Canon 50/1.4 for my Canon P. I don't regret it one bit, I love that lense, even though it's not the most ergonomic one.

I just got the 50/1.5 Nokton off FB marketplace, was surprised at the size on my Canon L2, but at the same time, it's lighter than my Canon 50mm LTM 1.8 in all chrome.

@@tomallen6073 The 21 and the 25 seem to have sold well enough to find on the used market. The 28/3.5 is much harder to find.
If you find the 21mm with no finder you can do what I did and buy the TTArtisans one. It's very bright and large and only costs about $50 shipped from China.
I love my Canon P as a daily street shooter and a very good travel camera. I have the Canon 50/1.4 ltm but the Canon 35/2 ltm is practically glued to my camera as it's so good for street photography. That said, every time I use the 50/1.4 I'm so impressed with the quality and rendering especially for close-up detail shots. I doubt that my P had ever had a CLA in it's 60+ years, and since it had a few small issues, I invested in a very good quality CLA and the thing now runs like a fine watch. A good CLA to extend the life for many more years and for buttery smooth operation makes a world of difference. Also the original lens hoods help to reduce flare and improve micro contrast. I have the original hood for the 50/1.4 but stopped using it recently. For some reason, it has always annoyed me to see it take so much space in the viewfinder.
@@SimonGarnier Agree that it does create a fair bit of viewfinder blockage but if you can get used to that, it really improves the performance. It's a personal choice of course but yes I know, it's a bit annoying.
@@john_murch I think I enjoy the shooting experience more than the final images to be honest (I sometimes keep exposed film for months in my fridge before thinking of developing it). Anything that gets in the way of that, I tend to eliminate if I can.

I am canon p owner(18 months) , paired with a canon serenar 35mm 2.8 ( an equally beautiful and classical lens , (the Serenar range of lens for the most part look the part )) and a also a Jupiter 135mm ... its a beautiful and quality camera ... it costs £1000 + less than a Leica , its a bargain , that will not be a bargain for long ,, these cameras will get more expensive ... is ridiculous they can be bought for less than £200 .. I also have a doomo light meter , and it works nicely with the camera , really does fit the look and feel .. if you want a really nice rangfinder , you can do much worse than a canon p .. the lens choice is up to you from £30 Russian lenses to £3000 Leica lenses , ... the shiedo company make some beautiful options , I think they are snapping up all the p's ... I am so impressed with my P , am really thinking about getting a vi-l and vi-t too...
I have the P and just bought a vi-l. For me, they are the gold standard for Canon RFs.

Personally, I like the Canon 7 better than the Canon P. I think the Canon P suffers from more hype and popularity right now, inflating prices the camera and making it a worse value. I like that the Canon 7 has switchable frame lines for 35, 50, 85, 100, and 135mm lenses. I think this allows for a much less-cluttered viewfinder when using the camera. I know that the built-in selenium meters on Canon 7 cameras may no longer work, or work accurately, so these may be of limited value. And that the presence of the selenium meter means that the Canon 7 does not have an accessory shoe for mounting other viewfinders or new shoe-mount light meters. But I still think the Canon 7 is the best value Canon rangefinder.
But ugly as sín. Get a Canon Accessory Coupler for it; makes it more functional and even uglier! De gustibus non disputandum est.
@@shoefantasia1412 I could not care less how "ugly" some people think the Canon 7 looks. In fact, being seen as "ugly" actually works in my favor because it means Canon 7 is cheaper by virtue of being less desirable. I'd rather buy an ugly camera that represents a much better value, than pay more for essentially the same thing with a prettier face. My priority is the bang for the buck, and with that in mind, it'll probably really piss you off that I use cheap Soviet LTM lenses on my ugly Canon 7.
@@shoefantasia1412ugly is very subjective, there's a lot more important factors if your interest is using the camera to take pictures instead of showing off. For that leica is a much better route anyways

Effectively, the Canon 7 becomes almost like a Canon P once the selenium light meter loses too much of its precision over time. I also find that the aesthetic of the P is cleaner without the light meter, but that’s my personal taste.
I had a 7, sold it, it's heavy, meter didn't really work and the advance was stiff. Love my P, it's perfect.

Some additional notes on the Canon P:
FYI: The large viewfinder magnification on the Canon P makes the 35mm frame lines unusable for photographers wearing glasses as you cannot see them in their entirety, with potentially areas outside the frame lines as well.
Yes, that is very true. It’s hard enough without glasses to seem them all at once. Luckily for me, I mostly shoot with my 50mm lens, so it’s not an issue. And I use my 35mm lens with a VT Deluxe instead.
I also struggle to see the 50mm.... =(
I shoot with a P, wear glasses, and have learned to cope with it. Just relax, look straight forward, and (key point) keep both eyes open. Thanks to the 1:1 magnification, your brain will superimpose the two views together, and the 35mm frameline will manifest itself at the edge of your peripheral vision. It works (mostly) - if you want to be positioning compositional elements at the exact edge of the frame, you probably shouldn't be shooting an RF camera anyway!
If that doesn't work out for you, here's another little-known option: originally, viewing eyepieces for the P were available in five different diopters, and you could change them just by removing the set screw in the black plastic rectangular surround, shifting it sideways a bit, and lifting it off. Inside you'll see that the actual eyepiece is a simple round lens that is trimmed down and cemented inside the black plastic frame. I admit I haven't tried this myself (yet) but if you're willing to splash out a bit of money at your local optician's shop, I'll bet it would be fairly easy to get a custom eyepiece lens made to your exact prescription, so you can use your P (and see the 35mm frame) without using glasses…
I haven't seen your videos for some time cos I am not a subscriber. I ALWAYS find your videos to be of exceptional quality. I am afraid I have given up on film images. One reason is I am really not that good at taking images besides taking analogue images takes even more skills to produce more than adequate good-looking images, whereas digital images are not so much.

The Canonflex was a good camera, but quirky design. The lens mount was super fiddly, and the lenses suffered from mechanical issues which cut the production life short. The Nikon F was superior in every way, the SLR to own! The 1955 and later Canon rangefinders were truly superb. Not to mention innovative with great useful features and hinged back making loading far easier. Build quality is impeccable!
I find my Canon P is easier to hold securely over my Leica MP. Sadly, the swivel tip of the rewinding knob broke off of my Canon P copy. I got mine from Shueido. Beautiful tourquoise blue with brown leatherette.
Sorry to hear that. The rewind crank is beautifully designed but I agree that it feels like the weakest part of the camera overall. I’ll be even more careful now.

Only one thing that stops me from using my beautiful Canon P is that : if you don't look directly into the rangefinder (aka looking in with an angle) you might screw up your focus. It's such a shame because pretty much everything else about this camera is perfect
Weird. I don’t have that issue with mine. Are the RF patches misaligned by any chance? Mine was knocked off vertically for a while but it was an easy fix in the end.

As a long time Canon RF collector, let me add a couple of points. Viewfinder. It looses the complex and costly shifting optics finder common to the prior series of bodies and in the 7/7S. The result is a view cluttered with multiple frame lines, which is off putting. On the other hand, the semi-silvered mirrors in the more complex finder system tend to fade or flake over time, which can dim the basic view and impair the shifting frame lines. Pick your poison. Shutter. The P shares the fairly radically redesigned shutter also used in the 7 and 7S. The problem is that shutter operates under much greater spring pressures than the traditional Leica-type shutter design used by Canon in prior models. The basic operation is very durable, but over time the high speeds slow down to the point where they cannot be restored by normal adjustment. No repair parts are available, and nearly all repairmen will refuse to work in that shutter. The shutters in models VI and earlier are easy/cheap to work on and repair as necessary.

I used to find that the 100mm frame lines were annoying when shooting with my 50mm lens. But then I figured out that I could use them as approximate rule-of-third indicators and, since then, I have used them a lot to help me with my compositions (when the rule-of-third applies, obviously). I also rarely use my 35mm lens with this camera and instead use my VT Deluxe for that.
Good to know about the slowing down of the higher speeds. I think that the problem hasn’t manifested with my camera (yet?) but I’ll certainly keep an eye on it now that you said that. Thanks!
@@AnalogInsights I had my CLA done in Japan (see my above comment). Everything can be restored according to spec including the shutter timings (as was done on my Canon P) and this repair business is even able to make custom parts if required. My repair was smooth and painless with good communication via e-mail throughout the repair process. They are ex-Leica trained and authorized technicians, JCH did a behind the scenes video on this business a few years ago, it's really worth a watch.
I have an L which has the gold color rangefinder patch and it’s held up incredibly well. Nearly as bright as my M. But no parallax correction in those models and that has stung me a time or two.

Probably not necessary. Especially if you are happy with your current setup.
Even in the 1970's, M-Series Leicas were way too pricey for this poor college student, so I searched Shutterbug Ads for the Canon P. It was sompletre with clip-on Selenium cell, 50mm f/1.8 Canon and brown case. It hasn't needed a yearly CLA that the M-Series Leicas seem to need, and it barely drew a second glance "on the street." Having saved money buying the Canon P, I spent that on a Canon 28mm f/2.8 and 105mm f/2.5 Nikkor lenses and film, instead.;)
In the 1980s and 90s, I was much into collecting and using Canon RF equipment. I never acquired a P. At the time, it was a lesser model but sold for a relatively high price. After I recovered from the mania, more recently the P was selling for practically nothing. Now with all of the hype, ala this video included, its prices are back up. As a collector, you should have a P. As a user, perhaps not the best choice. Why? The finder. It is the only Canon RF model which crowds its three frame lines into one fixed view, i.e., its view is cluttered and distracting. Not terrible, but far from the best available. It did let Canon sell the body more cheaply, but that cost advantage no longer applies in the used market. The Shutter. For the P, 7 and 7S, Canon introduced a new focal plane shutter made of steel foil. This presented a lot more mass to be moved, so the shutter was redesigned to higher operating tensions than previously. The result is that over time, the operating springs loose strength and the shutter slows. This can be adjusted to a point, but many of these shutters long ago weakened to the point where the high speeds cannot be adjusted to operating specification. I spent a lot of money for a CLA of my 7 with the best guy in the US for this work, and he gave me a table of the true operating speeds and told me to live with it. A true repair requires parts which have not been available for 40 years. So what to do? Consider a VIT or VIL. They use the traditional cloth, Leica-like shutter Cannon used for all models prior to the P. Easy to adjust; easy to repair; better view finder; and these days, not that much price difference.
No, the VI-T and VI-L use metal shutter curtains. The real weakness of the P is its low RF EBL (41mm); so really not usable with. 100/2 or 50/1.2. The 50/1.4 is borderline particularly at close focus distance.

I also have a Canon VT Deluxe which I shoot exclusively with a 35mm lens. I have tried it a few times with my glasses and it was fine. The viewfinder has 3 positions: 35mm, 50mm, and "precision focusing" (roughly 100mm I would say). I believe it has the same viewfinder as the VL/VL2 if you prefer a traditional film advance lever rather than the trigger winder of the VT.

For a 35 guy who wears glasses it is tough to beat a Leica M2.
Failing that a V Series Canon (as previously advised) would be your best bet if you dont use a 100, if you do then a VI-L or VI-T.
Nikon was originally just an optics company so the early Canon's used Nikkor lenses. Only after the war did Nikon start to make cameras and Canon lenses.
Do you have to blur the faces in Germany when you take "street" photographs?
Yes, to be on the safe side, it is recommendable to do that when publishing images in a fashion as we do here (in Germany).
