What I also think people don't seem to grasp is why he betrayed Cal. Bode and Cal's ideals were pretty much completely aligned until Cal decided he wanted to use Tanalorr for the hidden path which would make it that much more likely for the empire to find. Bode just wanted a safe place away from the empire so he could stop working for Denvik as a spy and raise his daughter in a safe place. He was helping Cal because it would've given him a way out and a safer life for his family and he was willing to let Cal be a part of that. Bode and Cal did become friends and he gave Cal plenty of chances to change his mind about bringing the hidden path but when he wouldn't budge, that's when Bode took it too far. That AND the fact that the force significantly enhances emotional responses, hence why he acted so aggressively in trying to keep his daughter out of the conflict between him and Cal, and also why the Jedi code forbids emotional attachments to friends, families and mentors.
I’ve seen people complain that the way Bode handled his betrayal and the safety of his daughter was far beyond the bounds of reason.
Well, of course it is, it’s supposed to be. The main themes of Anakin’s, Cal’s, and Bode’s arcs is that love can just as easily destroy you as it can save you, so I never quite understood that complaint.

yes, because him and his daughter alone, on an uncharted planet is absolutely safe, there were totally huge amounts of necessary supplies on his one seater fighter to sustain him and his little girl for sustained amounts of time. Then lets think "oh he would have gone out to get those things" okay, he is a wanted man by the ISB and they know his last location was on Koboh, so anytime he goes to get anything, he will be hunted, cant exactly take his daughter along if he desires her safe, so he plans on leaving her alone on that uncharted world with zero living necessities? while he risks being captured or killed by either the ISB/empire, or his newly made enemy jedi that also knows he has to come through koboh before going anywhere else. Bode was a fucking idiot that was going to get his daughter killed because he was a coward, using his wife as a distraction to keep running, just to turn around and surrender and help those that murdered his wife
edit: Remembering his plan to have the ISB dealt with by vader, do you believe vader would not have found out about a missing jedi and his young daughter that is also likely force sensitive during his interrogation of those he held responsible? Do you believe any of those people being interrogated would have felt any loyalty to Bode to not immediately tell them everything they know and give up his files even if they knew death was coming?

@@supervastgut1568 what do you mean? Him and his daughter alone on that planet is totally safe. Nobody else besides dagan, santari and the high republic jedi council knew of tanalorr's existence. Dagan never even brought up if there was any indigenous lifeforms that were dangerous. Even so, it's completely safe from the empire and that's what Bode wanted the most. And never did I defend bode's actions. He acted out of passion and wanted tanalorr all to himself and his daughter and would've done anything to get to that point, including hurting kata if necessary. Idk what you're all bent up about. And Bode DID disappear. Bode Akuna isn't even his real name. He used skills from when he worked in intelligence in the Clone Wars to disappear. As far as the empire knows, he is dead. Denvik knows he is alive but denvik wasn't given any information on Tanalorr. He wouldn't know where Bode holed up even if Vader showed up which wouldn't be likely.

A cool thing to notice on a repeat playthrough is that Bode keeps subtly trying to turn Cal away from Jedi ideals. He gives him a blaster, which the Jedi would frown on, he encourages him to pursue a relationship with Merrin, which the Jedi would frown on. All of this to try to convince (or manipulate, if you will) Cal to stop trying to do the Jedi thing, fighting the Empire and working with the Hidden Path. He really wanted Cal and his family to go to Tanalorr with him and his daughter, and live there peacefully.

Cordova was the only loose end that Bode thought was left. Watch Bode’s expression right when Cordova shows that the Compass is working. He finally realizes he’s gonna have to do it and he’s gonna have to do it now. Cordova was probably the only person smart enough to be able to recreate a compass after having fixed it, which meant that if was truly going to keep Tanalorr secret then Cordova had to be silenced for good. With him dead there shouldn’t have been any other way to get to Tanalorr, but obviously Cal finds the message left by Santari and finds a way using the arrays.
The voice actor for Bode made a comment on a Reddit thread about Bode’s state of mind. Obviously he deluded himself into thinking his intentions are noble until he finally reaches Tanalorr and realizes that he destroyed the last meaningful friendship in his life and for what? A completely abandoned and dead planet or a “kingdom of ashes” as the comment said.
That moment right before he sees Cal and Merrin on Tanalorr where he is looking at the light in the temple you can see the frustration on his face and you can hear it when he yells for Kara. Instead of doing the right thing with his last chance, he completely loses it and winds up doing the only thing a cornered animal will do when they are attacked:lash out with everything regardless of the consequences.
He uses Kara as an excuse for everything he has done, but the last fight really shows why he had been fighting all along: selfishness. The pain of losing his wife was not something he ever wanted to have to go through again ;even if it meant his daughter would never have the chance for a life of freedom and autonomy. He isn’t keeping Kara safe because he is worried about her. He’s keeping her safe because he doesn’t want to feel any guiltier than he already does after being the sole reason that his wife was killed. That’s why when he’s fighting Cal and Merrin, Merrin has to save Kara because he isn’t even cognizant enough to not harm his own daughter while he fights.
TL:DR Bode isn’t protecting Kara for her sake. He’s protecting her so he selfishly doesn’t have to feel any more guilt than he already does.

I also think people miss why Cal willingly embraced the Dark Side for a bit after he lost Cere.
Cal lost both Jaro Tapal and Cere Junda to betrayal. The difference is that Cal didn't have the connection to the clones that he did to Bode.
The clones were soldiers; Cal was their commander. They were friendly and treated him well, but they had a very clear boss/subordinate relationship.
Bode and Cal became close enough that they considered each other brothers and best friends. They had the same goal: protecting their families from the Empire. Bode became part of the crew of the Stinger Mantis and, by association, part of Cal's new family.
To Cal, Bode betrayed their family and caused the death of Cere to serve his own self-interest. A man he thought he knew turned out to be something else, and everything Cal thought he knew was thrown out the window.

I think everyone “saw” the twist coming. I mean what person isn’t skeptical of a new character that we know very little about joining the protagonists journey. However its not a lazy twist by any stretch no matter how many people are sitting here saying “I knew this was going to happen from the beginning”
What I think the game does very very well is let down the players guard a lot over the course of the game. You the player (just like cal) become close to bode and trust him more as the story progresses and you learn about his daughter. The game introduces you and preoccupies your attention with the main villains and throughout Bode is there to help and fight along side you the whole way.
That’s what makes the twist so shocking despise being skeptical of Bode since the beginning. Oh that and making him a former Jedi and being the “Survivor” was just an amazing addition.

You are so caught up with Bodes betrayal (whether you saw it coming or not) just like Cal is in game that when he reveals what he is you’re just completely dumbfounded and blindsided by it. It was absolutely gorgeous storytelling, they just hit you with the one-two punch.
And then later when you catch up with Bode and chase him down in that Imperial facility, and activate the Dark Side for the first time it’s so poetic. Because before Cal was always running from the monsters of the dark side, but now *he* is the monster chasing down someone else. He literally tears through the base screaming Bodes name it’s such a horrific moment when playing as Cal (I mean its badass as hell too, but you’re so caught up in the power of it and wanting to kill Bode as much as Cal does that you don’t realize until after when you see the aftermath for yourself).

All in all, I suspected since Coruscant that Bode was a spy of sorts, but I knew for certain as soon as when he picked up interest after hearing Cal and Greeze discuss Tanallor. As such, after the fight with Dagan, I did have a sneaking suspicion he took his sober and would use it against Cal, but I genuinely never expected him to be a force user at all.

  • @Tyrineal
    @Tyrineal Рік тому +3

I thought his reason for betrayal was very paper thin and seen it coming, especially after Cal left behind Dagan's lightsaber. The fact he was a Jedi however came out of no where that was well hidden. Thought Bode would have been much as a character with some minor tweaks:
    - Keep that fact that he was a Jedi and during Order 66, used his intelligence and espionage training to vanish and went to work for the Empire after Order 66. Have it revealed that Vader would have known he was a Jedi and turned him into a new type of Sith Lord; an undercover Sith Lord to befriend Jedi's and rebel factions. While not as powerful as other Sith Lords give him the unique ability to mask his presence, his intentions and force alignment from Jedi's like Cal who can sense it
    - Remove his Daughter entirely as a character, but keep her around as a talking point from Bode who used it to gain sympathy from Cal and company given there backstory. When Cal catches up to him on Nova Garron have Bode tell him his daughter is fake.
    - Have him reveal his was tasked with Killing Cere and was using Cal to get close to her, with the Empire (Palpatine specifically) not seeing Cal as a threat despite his recent actions against the Empire. Vader however is somewhat intrigued by Cal and thinks he could be a great Inquisitor. Him stumbling across Cordova and seeing how Cal is far stronger then Vader and Palpatine thought and the Jedi Order is actually starting to regain it's footing would have thrown a wrench in his plans and has to wait for new orders. During this wait he actually starts to see Cal as an actual friend. When the new orders come in; find the base, determine it's defensive strength, disable their defenses and let Vader kill Cordova and Cere and capture Cal hoping the loss of his mentors would turn him to the Dark Side. Bode, now having grown to like Cal, and not wanting him to fall to the Dark Side kills Cordova himself to lure Cal far away from Vader's inevitable arrival to save him. Bode would inform Vader that he killed Cordova in self defense; with Cordova "figuring out" his identity and he "killed" Cal himself and secretly plans to run away with the Compass to save himself having betrayed Vader for Cal. Bode also knew that if Cal's friends were there to comfort him, they wouldn't allow him to fall to the Dark Side.
    - Cal, not seeing it that way, pursues him with his friends. Cal wants Bode to give up and to use Tannalor as a safe haven for those who want to run from the Empire and wants to forgive Bode for his betrayal. Bode; hurt Cal didn't see it his way snaps and attacks, saying he gave up everything for Cal, with Cal being forced to kill Bode

    • @sacb0y
      @sacb0y Рік тому +1

I think what you're missing is Bode is also a theme of the games story. Much of the story is a contrast to Cal. How the strong desire for things can lead to the dark side. Cal gets blinded by wanting to take down the empire much like dagans obsession, he also values his new family which even one of their death at the hands of bodes betrayal pushes him to the dark side which is similar to bode and his daughter.
And in the end, cal gets to help someone who lost their family like he did find their way.
I think the story is centered around cal gaining wisdom and perspective and relearning why jedi believed what they did. And ultimately having to make the right decisions to not repeat the orders mistakes that lead to their downfall.

But him working as a deep undercover operative and being a force user himself were definitely surprises I don't think any of us could have seen coming. Really put an exclamation point on the title of the sequel being about a survivor. Mid way through the game he starts to become disagreeable 2nd guessing a lot of your decisions. Now he's not as bad as some who will always make any idea out to be a bad idea and not come up with any solutions on their own. You can kind of pick up on these kinds of things in writing all the time. A side character may think you are being a conspiracy theorist or that you are losing your mind or that some flaw with the main character makes them the bad guy in some way you can usually bet they are the type of characters to double cross. Not all of these are examples Bode shows but enough was present right from the beginning. From the time Cal learned of the planet, he said it would be a great place for anyone to hide from the empire, not just exclusively jedi. After his daughter was saved from the empire, why does he continue? He was even offered the chance to give up and be forgiven, granting him and Kata the refuge that was supposedly his motivation, in the final confrontation.

ngl, its heartbreaking that bode SO DESPERATELY wants to not betray cal. a lot of the secret force echoes are him talking about convincing cal or giving him more chances. when he told kata that cal was his best friend he definitely wasnt lying. thats just how...blinded he ALSO got by tanalorr. both him and dagan wanted to find it for the right reasons (protecting loved ones) but their fall happened because of the sheer obsession they had with wanting to keep them safe. i think its reasons like this that jedi for many years forbade attachment. love can literally overcome even common sense and sound thinking, even if its originally meant in a way that is..well intentioned.
cal also was nearly blinded by tanalorr, because he's become so focused on fighting the empire. its all he's known. luckily he has someone like merrin with a fantastic head on her shoulders. and it looks like him and merrin have kind of...adopted kata and will be another good balance to his encroaching and growing reliance on using the dark side
PS: kata is WAY too fucking mature for her age, jesus chisticles, most kids even seeing their parents be beyond reason would utterly despise their parents murderer.
also. i also kiind of thought bode was gonna die after the 2nd dagan gera fight. like. NOW it makes sense why he was confident enough to fight him and why he was able to so easily evade death. but back when i first did that fight i was so terrified bode would die. dude was just THAT likeable up until he became a dick. and even then i wanted him to just...see the light. some type of redemption of atonement so he would still be alive for the 3rd game. nope. dude was just too blinded by love for his daughter.

The thing I'll never understand is Dagan's lightsaber progression. It starts off as a single blade which he corrupts turning red, then on his second encounter on the control tower he's made it dual bladed and able to split, just like Cal's. I'd understand if Dagan took inspiration from Cal, but wouldn't that need a second Kyber crystal? Where did he find that? And why is it that when Bode takes it, it becomes single bladed again? I could understand if Bode could only use a single bladed in combination with his blasters, but I doubt he'd only take half of Dagan's saber for himself.
