  • Under Stairs Pull Slide Out Cupboard Storage | Ground Floor Renovation | New Kitchen & Living Room
    Things are moving so fast on our ground floor renovation project. We are focusing on the kitchen which we bought from Wren, the builder has plasted, Tiled and started install the wren kitchen cupboards and now we move on to installing the cooker hob. This old 1970 Victorian cottage is stepping ever closer into the modern era.
    This has been a brain child of mine ever since we moved into this 1870 cottage, The space under the stairs was wasted and we always wanted to do more with this valuable space. We couldn't use it as a seating area because of the head room and not many furniture would fit. The best thing to do would be to have a bespoke storage unit built to fit the space perfectly. Yup you guessed it, we've done just that buy building an under stairs cupboard storage draws to meet our family needs. This hidden storage space will be perfect for our family in the years to come and it will enrich and add value to our home. This was tougher than it looks but its is so worth the effort and money which we have invested.
    We have decided to do as much of the renovation as possible in order to save money. DIY is a fantastic way to reduce cost while getting the satisfaction of gaining lasting memories.
    Watch as we transform this old victoria cottage into our dream home.

    This man's has a small space , others have larger areas under their stairs. I think every one of them are brilliant , more storage is very desirable.

      We have wanted to do this for ages. Some companies are charging couple thousands to design and make these cupboards.

      @@TheMalcolms7 Thanks for responding. I bought my first home a year ago and would like to do a light refurbishment to it. I've spent a year trying to figure out what to do and where to start. I'm hoping to do a lot of it myself to save money and because I enjoy DIY. I need a builder adviser type person to say do this do that, you need these tools or get someone professional in for that job. It's an exciting journey 😊. Id love to know how its measured up for planning.

    • @TheMalcolms7
      @TheMalcolms7  4 місяці тому

      Hiya. To be honest my friend did most of the measurements. The first thing we did was measure and find out what size drawer runners we needed for the area.
      We then had to think about the design of the design layout of the drawers. How many we would have. We then divided the area by 3 but I do believe the drawers final width was done once the very sturdy frame was built and decided into 3 compartments. .
      We have never done anything like this before so we basically adjusted as we went along.
      It's difficult to say how to measure as every staircase dimension will be different.
      One thing to note that the drawers become very heavy when made out of plywood and MDF so it might be a good idea to make more drawers which are smaller rather than three large ones like we did. Also, the strength and weight capacity of the drawer runners are essential. Went for the most heavy duty ones we could find at the time and so far so good. They have been holding up well under the weight of the drawers and their contents.

    Great project! Hoping to do something similar. Is the frame drilled into the floor, or just into the walls?

    • @TheMalcolms7
      @TheMalcolms7  Рік тому

      Hey Tee
      Thank you so much. The project has been a real success. It was a dream of ours to use this space and we are glad we did.
      The drawers are very heavy as we decided to make large ones rather than several smaller ones. We decided to secure it to the floor which means drilling into the tiles 🫣 (special drill bit needed)
      As we intend to keep this storage indefinitely we didn't mind punching the holes into the floor for extra strength.
      What are you thinking of doing. Big drawers or small ones?
      I hope to eventually do a 1 year later video to see how it holds up after constant daily use so watch the space 🚀
      In the meantime I have some other DIY projects to tackle first

    Looks great and I understand this way your first time. Just FYI for next time... If you reset your uprights to the depth of the MDF and set your draw runners proud by the same measurements, you have overlap your MDF draw fronts over the stud uprights so the uprights are not visable and the finished look if flush and uniform. You can add some trim around the door fronts to give it a panelled look also... GG guys

    How did you fix the base of the frame to the floor tiles?

    • @TheMalcolms7
      @TheMalcolms7  Рік тому

      Hey Peter!. So we use really long screws that came with a jacket wall plug. Tricky Spot was drilling through the tiles in order to Bank of the base to the floor. So far it's held up pretty well and to be honest, a lot of the strength actually comes from the back wall which is solid brick as well as the staircase which is pretty sturdy. Allen or I haven't seen any movement whatsoever. I would say to make sure that you reinforce the frame as much as possible before putting on the exterior cladding. So far so good and the drawers are working just as they should 🙏🏾

      It's been holding up very well. We used the strongest drawer runners we could find.

I have a general figure of around £550 including labour and materials. The tricky things that material have gone up even more since doing this and the builder didn't charge me his normal premium rate. The builder charged me £300 for around 3.5 days work, would have been more if I didn't work with him and we have done a project like this before. This could have cost over £2000 with some professional companies. It's holding us very well so far. Hope that helps.
