Growing Pumpkins In The UK Update
This video is a bit overdue, however, it's finally time to give you guys a quick update on our pumpkins for this year. Haven't put a lot of attention in growing pumpkins this year because we focused on other vegetables that we are growing in our garden for 2024. There's always at least one pumpkin plant and this year is no exception. Harvest is going to be small. We are still excited for what's in store.
We grow our pumpkins Not for Halloween. We grow the crone Prince variety which is a gorgeous, sweet and dry version unlike the Halloween, orange pumpkins and squash. These are sweet and flavourful which Are great for making soups and are roast dishes.

Our tomatoes are starting to ripen and we are so excited to see them change colour. The taste amazing and we feel so proud to know that we grew these tomatoes in our garden at home. Today we are harvesting some of our tomatoes. The yellow variety and Large red variety are first up but we also finally get to pick one of our very first san marzano tomatoes which we have never grown before. Suppor...

Excellent job Those pumpkins look amazing
Thank you so much 😊 We hope to harvest them soon 😁 Can't wait
They have at least left you some corguette. Try slicing lengthways into finger size pieces dip in batter deep fry and dip in tzatziki sauce 😋😋😋. It’s trying 4:43 and that’s all it can do. Amazing how much is still growing, happy gardening, Ali ☔️☔️🇨🇦
@@myrustygarden Hiya Great tips here. I was actually looking at that recipe the other day lol I keep saying I will try it but I still haven't. It's been so rainy here in the UK too. And colder than usual. The farmers have had their second worst year for farming according to the news. Wet and mild summer 🙂↕️
Excellent job ken. Very well done😊
@@robertwillis9988 👋🏾 hey Thanks a lot Rob 😁 Guttering is working very well so far. This was a very affordable way of collecting water 💦
Agree. That roofer is a lovely guy to give you all those parts. So much better than going to waste😊@@TheMalcolms7
I walk past many skips, and so much wasted wood, guttering, building materials, etc in them. I saved 2 perfectly good small grey(brand new) upvc windows and will reuse them in my newly cladded workshop.😊
@robertwillis9988 wow 😲 Didn't get me started on the waste that takes place in this country. Well done you. I've done something similar before and it's very good for the environment. We just made a shelf using recycled boards
Wow!!! It's not even that cold up here in normally old West Yorkshire!! I still have strawberries, & tomatoes . I did harvest my sweet potatoes ( got a few good size ones) 🎉 Cho cho did nothing much so gonna put it inside as it's in a pot. Please harvest quickly 🙏
@@val6112 I know. We have had rotten lunch with the weather temperatures. I can't believe how cold it's been. Even our pumpkin leaves are affected 😭 All the tomatoes too. Life eh I will bite the bullet and harvest what I can. I will hold out for the chochos though. I don't normally overwinter the plants as it didn't seem to give any better results. Growing from seed is just as if not not fruitful, weather permitting of course
Hope we get a good few more mild days to help you along! 🎉My cho cho didn't even attempt to bare fruit so I'm hoping for the early start for next year...if it survives😊
@val6112 I hope it survives. The early autumn frost has really been a shock. I'm so curious as to why yours didn't blossom and fruit. I can't say that I'm doing anything special. A nice sunny location and good soil for the plant. Perhaps next year you can try having another plant in the ground to compare how they both perform.
Who else was shocked to see how cold it was this morning 🥶 I'm not ready for you winter ❄️❄️❄️ Who's with me? 😅

A good job & excellent explanation on how you accomplished the job Well done!
@@steveascension9626 hi Steve Thanks a lot for your encouragement. I'm pleased to say that the shed and the base is holding up well. Are you doing something similar?
@@TheMalcolms7 You deserved the encouragement on a job well done. I'm just looking at a number of options for a Garden shed base. Haven't settled on a strategy as yet. Just doing the observing first at what others have done successfully like your job..
Thank you 😊 Two fundamental tips. I want to stress when doing a shed base are. 1. Make sure you dig down deeper. Aunt calculate backwards to ensure your floor level is higher than grass level to prevent water running off the grass on top of your slabs and underneath your which will cause it to rot. This is a common mistake. 2. Don't skip a firm foundation as the ground moves and shifts over time and you don't want to risk your shed base sinking. Using r ubble or like I've done partially pieces of grounded bricks and stones, then tamper them into the ground to compact it before starting your sand or motor layer then adding slabs which should be at least 10 mm higher than ground level. I've done a couple of sheds for customers now after my experience doing my own and these rule are always a lifesaver.
Im glas you all had a great time The kids especially ❤
Thank you 🙏🏾 It was so lovely to have a break with the family 😊 The girls absolutely adored it in Devon

God's continued blessings upon you and your beautiful family
@@jennylwilson3571 aww Thank you so much. We can never have too much prayer 🤲🏾 My sentiments are the same for you and your family ✨
When did you plant them, please?😊
@@jennylwilson3571 believe it or not I sowed these in early late Feb - march in small pots. Some were planted out when it was warm enough, around May. I normally keep them in the greenhouse in containers to harden. I then plan the remaining half of the plants in July which give them enough time to flowers late in summer to autumn after the first set has come to their end. This way we have flowers for longer. Plant them deep in rich soil and a sunny location. Watch out for slugs and snails especially after planting. I often use strong bamboo chain to support them ore if I plant them against the fence then I tie them to the fence because it does get windy and the need the support especially if they are the really tall variety. I've saved some seeds from this year's crop. Let me know if you would like some for next year if you live in the UK ☺️
@@TheMalcolms7 Thank you so much for this information. Yes, I would love some sunflower 🌻 seeds to join you when you are planting for next year. Very kind of you. Blessings
@@jennylwilson3571 awesome 👍🏾 themalcolmsinfo@gmail.com Drop me an email with your deets 📨 We will go on the journey together. Yes, I've never actually saved seeds before but I thought there is no way I should be buying seeds every year considering how I love sunflowers lol 🤣 They sometimes grow at random wherever they have falling after the squirrels have attacked them towards the end of summer.
👋 👋
@@MyaMulligan-d6w Hiya 😊 Looking at this video and I can't believe how good the weather was at the end of August compared to the past month and a bit. Hope you are warm and well 😊
Good job 👏
@@MyaMulligan-d6w thank you Mya It was fun to grow these and I can wait for the next growing season Did you grow sweetcorn also? It's so cold today 🥶
I think it's too late for my cho cho plant...there are flowers but turning cold now.😣
@@maiviola7879 that positive that you have flowers. Hopefully you will have some of the fruit mature before it's too cold. Is your plant in the ground? The same thing happened to our plant last year and we managed to get around 7 fruits before the frost got too cold. I remember harvesting one in late October/November and it twas partially frozen 🤣
@@TheMalcolms7 Yes, planted in the ground around June. 🙂
@@maiviola7879 AHH We planted ours perhaps back in may. It's a boy hit or miss depending on the temperature. It normally takes a while before it starts to grow vigorously once it's planted out. It's so cold today that I'm seriously doubting whether or not we will have enough time for the fruit to reach maturity 🙏🏾
🌻=Joy ❤ Like if you agree 🙌🏾👍🏾
So thats what I was supposed to do! 🤦🏽♀️ mine all fell off and I wondered why....on the funny side though I think I just witnessed some sort of Pumpkin IVF 😂😅
Hahahaha 🤣 IVF lol It finds it funny too. You can do this for most plants. Some do need a bit of tlc to secure their chance of success. Yes, this is definitely a must when you're growing pumpkins in limited space. Normally you'd have pumpkins trailing all over the floor. Crisscrossing and bringing the male and female fruit closer together which allows insects and pollinators to jump from one flower to the next and by doing so pollination takes place. I have found that when in the garden at home things stretch out in a long line and there's less crisscrossing happening which seems to diminish the amount of pollination. We loved growing pumpkins because they're great for storing throughout winter, but they are also super tasty when you get a good variety. What variety are you growing?
🎉🎉🎉Wowww!! I am happy to see this. Mine not doing well 😢 leaves turning yellow and no blossoms 😅 ....i have just one plant in a pot so next year i try putting it in the ground. Well done on yours 🎉🎉🎉
Oh no I'm so sorry to hear that. Definitely agree with putting it in the ground. I have not done it in pots before because I know that it is a plant that likes to trail so I figured it will need a great root system to spread. I'm sure yours will do much better next year. ❤️
Look at our progress guys 🎉 So excited to see the progress

Me too ☺️ I wished the summers were a bit longer. It's so wet and it's getting cold just as soon as the plants are getting into gear ⚙️ We are grateful for any amount of fruit though.

I love HOME grown sweet 🌽🌽🌽🌽🌽 😋😋😋😋
You are so right. It hits differently. So crisp and sweet 🤤
Thanks for the video. Did one taste better than the other?
Hiya P Well We literally just had some of the corn we grew in the garden as well as some store-bought corn. The difference is night and day. The ones that we grew are so less uniformed but the sweetness is so much better and more balanced. I find that the store-bought corn is so uniform. It literally is like eating a cloned cup of corn. The grains are typically more shallow on the store-bought ones and they are way too soft. The ones that we grew in the garden are so sweet, textured and flavourful. The only downside is that there aren't enough of them lol
Great job 👏🏾 🌽
@@libertyimmigration4465 thank you Hun They are so sweet and full of flavour 🌽

i heard it fruits in mid to late sept. the squirrels had the flower tips on a few of my plants. i got around 15 fruits from 3 plants, would have been more if the weather was better in london. So good in soup, really holds it's form.
@@northlondon3664 Hi North London A place we know well 😉. Yes ours is fruiting now thank god the squirrels didn't eat all the blossoms but then again there's still time lol Ice got one plant and it's blossoming loads. I'm hoping they will mature quickly as the temperature is dropping quickly here in the west midlands. Last year the frost got to it before we could get more fruit. We will be grateful for whatever we get this year although we are hoping to beat last year's record of 8 fruits What else have you got growing?
