- Welp, "WE" broke my Texas Speed built Turbo Ford Godzilla engine and smoked a brand new, very nice transmission in the process. When the thrust bearing shatters and sends the crank moving back and fourth *long ways*, you can expect some pretty nasty results. Luckily I tend to learn from my hard mistakes. So im pulling the Godzilla and sending it back to Texas Speed for a full refresh. I've also already got a brand new Gearstar Transmissions 4l85e spec'd out as gnarly as you can get and with a full manual valvebody and transbrake...because 4wd burnouts. And you can expect to see episodes on every step of the process.

He said what he did, bolt it together with the wrong torque converter spacing, and when it broke the transmission it tried to push the converter through the front of the motor.
Idiot UA-camrs tearing up good equipment from lack of skills.
Seems like Cleet was going through a few Texas Speed motors with Ruby and Leroy back in the day

That filter scrape was a horror show. You’d never have known it was hurt with that choppy idle.

Transmission/converter is what typically wipes out the thrust bearing…
Too much pump pressure ramming the converter into the crank, or the converter is ballooning.
I don't know what converter Zack was using with that GS Pro 4L85e but I would hope it was billet and good for anti-ballooning. Pump Pressure sure lets see what 300 psi will do lol

yup those 7.2 truck motors ant made for this type of power..stock they delaminate the rollers on the lifters. Look at all of the other zilla projects on the internet. Built or not..your better off with a coyote.. cars make wild power with boost and fuel on stock long blocks.
Cleetus had a 7.3 in McFlurry making shit load of power. Yeah he swapped it for the coyote but it wasn't for lack of power, it was cuz he wanted to go above 6800rpm.

the F150 has a coyote, mcflurry had the turbo godzilla until they killed it then switched to the coyote in that one as well. the problem with the godzilla is there just isn't enough part development for it right now to hit high horsepower numbers. texas speed and a few others are trying but they still have a long road ahead of them.

Serviceability is everything! I too have the worst time getting to my bolts for my long tube headers. Just gotta grow and keep rollin.

any engine builder here will tell you, after metal contamination- always a new oil pump, and have to clean every oil port. only way it wont blow up again. either way cant wait for more content from you Zach. if you got merch link it plz. 🎉🎉

One of the things I miss about my old job is Boxer's random visits.
Its likley the converter charge pressure that caused the thrust to get knocked out. That increased the distance of the converter pull out distance.
Make sure the oil pump is rebuilt. Id replace all ail lines if you cant replace them flush everything. When its back together get a trans expert to set up the charge pressure.
5:32 brother!! You need some aviation hardware for those! You can get a low profile bolt head to give you a lot more clearance
My first thought, was why remove the headers to pull the engine. Just yank it together
OBS needs to stay SBC! They make some pretty big cubic motors that would of looked better, lasted longer, etc!

Put some 12 point hardware on those header bolts. It helps in tight spaces.

Brother. I had thrust washers take out and engine on one of my old dailies. I felt this pain, but that was from a weak thrust washer and an agressive clutch to hold some more boost. That only cost 12k though, couldnt imagine 40k down the drain that quick 😅
My dad had a 96 blacked out with black bumpers on chrome 22s. His had the split back doors. Such a fun truck.

Arp 12 point nuts and studs will make the headers way easier to get on and off. I used to struggle with my turbo manifolds on my torana with ground down spanners and shit to try and get into the tight spaces. Now it's way easier
Looks like you got it saved before it got bad, cost to clean and re-bearing it should all that will be the damage (ideally!) Looking forward to update on tsp page and/or here as well.
The only thing worse than blowing up your engine is not learning from it.
Usually thrust bearings won't take out an engine til it blows chunks past the filter. That aftermarket deal with no bypass is probably what saved you. I always run no-bypass filters, I'd rather the oil gauge tell me something's wrong than the rods (by knocking).

Big blocks are great, till it's on a engine stand and you gotta flip it over.

At least you caught it before something catastrophic failed. Doing some light polishing on the cam and crank with a usable block is a lot more manageable than needing new... Well, probably would have needed damn near everything if the crank moved enough or the oil journals to the rotating assembly sucked up enough powdered horsepower😂.
Its moving a ton! Clearance should be a few thou without looking it up

damn that is a lot of power. Billet filters rule. I keep one on the engine just for driving a manual trans...you might guess, I check for thrust materials. it happens to any engine really.

Did the torque convertor expand from too much power ? I built a 454 for a motorhome a few years back . The thrust bearing did the same thing . The owner was a little too happy with the new found hp. Might want to talk look into a built th400 with a billet convertor .

With that much power I recommend a toroidal thrust bearing. Common upgrade on hi power stock block stuff

Would be cool if you went back to a SBC or Big Block Chevy. The Grub Worm runs 6 second 1/4’s with a factory cast SBC and Cleetus was most successful with a Big Block from Dart. At these levels it’s all about head gasket sealing and the small and big block chevy’s do it the best with a better design.

Just make sure when they are setting the trans/tq converter up with different spacing you account for where the crank is supposed to be not with the thrust washer missing, in pieces lol. I had a thrust bearing go on a 454 c30 the only way I found out is the trans would squeal a little in reverse
