    A key point many people dont realize: the manual override for a rack & pinion slide is always on the OPPOSITE side from the slide it moves.

    We’ve owned RVs of one type or another since 1991. My husband learned quickly on fixing problems on his own, until UA-cam came along. We’ve never taken them back to the dealership to have repairs done because when you live in them, you can’t afford to pay for a motel every time they need fixing. We’ve used mobile RV repair service a couple of times, but mostly he’s been able to handle the repairs. Good for you! We haven’t been to Fort Smith since we’ve moved from Oklahoma. But we’re familiar with Casey’s.

      Nice!! At least the nasty weather is short-lived.
      When we lived in Minnesota and Illinois, we learned why people started getting out and moving around in the 50 deg temps. They had amazing summers, but they were short. 😊

    We had to get into our underbelly on our Jayco a few years back after a blow out left us on the side of the road with few options. We had a blow out and the tire winch crank failed. Luckily I was able to cut the cable with vise grips to get out tire down. Jayco sent a new winch because they over tightened the winch at the factory and sheared the roll pin. Long story short, Eternabond works great for repairing the cut area of the underbelly. Gorillia tape lasted a year, Eternabond has been on for years, road grime and all.
    Safe travels, we enjoy your videos.

    • @RVUntethered

      Great info, thanks! Eternabond is a miracle tape, for sure! I didn’t even think about that!
      That is the second time someone mentioned the pin shearing off, from over tightening. Something else we didn’t think about, so thank you for putting that in the comments!

      We have gotten gas a million times, but with blood sugar issues, high traffic and three failed attempts to be able to get into the small gas stations, we called it.

    • @RVUntethered
      @RVUntethered  8 місяців тому

      Yes, the mobile tech advised that dirt can cause them to get gunked up and stuck. When we called him back to tell him that we fixed it, he said that he also has cut holes in the underbelly to help save time and money for the owner. He was impressed that we got it in one try. 😂
      There are a lot of options to stop the tire jack, but this one has held it since September. We met someone at the rally that makes them for cheap.

We’ve been using a 12v only solar system with 200AH of lithium for over a year to hit Harvest Hosts. It’s more than adequate! Great job on the fix and gaining more RV maintenance knowledge. I had to solve a slide motor issue and learned that the manual overrides are on opposing sides..Also, that pin that connects the rod to the motor is a shear pin, designed to break if over torqued/turned the wrong way and not damage the motor. It would be nice for manufacturers to mark where the motors are so we can cut the underbelly at the correct place. Thanks again for sharing

    I have a suspicion that you have a low current problem, usually caused by a loose connection or insufficient cable size. Voltage is good, but amp flow isn't there. This would be like having a loose battery connection on your truck, in which you get loud clicking, but the starter won't turn over. It just seems unlikely that two slides would stick at the same time.

    • @RVUntethered
      @RVUntethered  8 місяців тому +1

      Well that’s an interesting theory. It makes sense. It would be pretty coincidental, unless there was a single gear that impacted both.
      We are leaning toward the fact that there was SO much mud and dirt on our last trip, that it caked up. When we put them back in for travel day, the noises they made were odd. I plan to get under there and see what I can do to clean it and maybe grease it.
      Only one stuck at first at the rest area and then the second wouldn’t come out.

    The nature of the beast of the stick and staple industry. They have to cheap out on everything to make more profits. Shoddy workmanship. Cheap materials. Incomplete installations. I'd bet the farm that those rods aren't the only thing that they didn't get installed properly. The manufacturer leaves stuff like that to the dealership to have to deal with after the sale. It's why they're overloaded with warranty work and RVs sit for months waiting for the service.
    The lobby stops government regulations that would force manufacturers to build products right.
