I’ve recently found myself using a wheelchair full time and around my house. I had no clue how to safely transfer myself until watching your video. Thank you for sharing!!

What a great public service. I used to work as an RN in neurosurgery. Would definitely have recommended your videos to patients. Will post on my Facebook for nurses connected to me and will ask all people to share. This needs to go viral. Will look through your videos. Hoping you might have one on how someone with paraplegia can get their pants down and up using the toilet and if renovating your bathroom what design around toileting best suits. Thank you.

Craig, thank you very much for your video. I live in the US and take art lessons at our local senior center. The center will be rebuilt later this year and the staff has asked all of us for suggestions on building design improvements to be made. We all have ideas about easels and lighting but so far, no one has addressed the issue of our woefully inadequate bathroom facilities. Your video has been enlightening for me, as someone who does not use a wheelchair I had no idea there are such things as pull-down grab bars and it never occurred to me that you might need to touch the toilet surface in order to transfer. I will add the extra pull-down grab bar to my suggestions and in this age of COVID, insist that we have a readily accessible supply of sanitary wipes to clean surfaces in the toilet.

Your videos are so important & informative for those of us who used to keep useless decorative items that cluttered up valuable space!

Craig, thank you so much for sharing. I am currently working to design a bathroom for a 13 year old paraplegic that wants to gain more independence. I suggested a bidet seat but since she has no feeling below the chest, what are your thoughts on this? For the past 7 years, she has had assistance with everything and I'm not sure if she will have the strength to do a toilet transfer on her own, and I'm not sure if the water spray from a bidet seat would reach high enough if she is on her shower chair.

When you go to the bathroom, how, or.when are you able to take your pants down? I mostly wear dresses but have trouble taking my underwear down.

I rarely use the grab rails in public loos as I feel like they must be filthy so I use my wheelchair to hold onto as I can do standing transfers. I've only had to do upper body transfers a few times and it exhausting...how long did it take for you to be able to do it independently?
I have padded toilet seat, I had to buy it as council said they don't provide padded ones but they'd soon be moaning if got pressure sore and needed full time care!!

I actually cheat and always use catheters with a urine bag when I'm out in public, so I don't need to get off my wheelchair at all. It can be hard work, I learned this in rehab at a similar time to my other transfers. It helps when you do it all the time 😂
Sorry to hear that your council sounds very stingy! I was offered either a padded toilet seat or a shower chair when I left hospital. I chose the shower chain as I find this easier when I'm at home.

But when you're on the toilet you don 't keep your trousers on do you? How do you put them on and off?

    • @adaptivetravel

Of course I don't wear my trousers while I'm on the toilet 😂😂 I take them off on the wheelchair or the toilet in the same way I do in this video (lot's of leaning side to side) ua-cam.com/video/j7sA-9yMrkY/v-deo.html
Best is to do the whole thing naked, but we obviously couldn't show that in the video 😂😂

My husband recently was bedbound 12 months. Now able to use an elec wheelchair. He does not have a spinal injury so we use a urinal instead of a catheter but I still have issues taking him on trips as I do not know how to handle if he has to poop. He has a short window to get on a pot. At home I have a bedside commode which works nicely...however taking a trip to fla this winter. Not sure how to handle this while in our transport van. Any ideas?

@@adaptivetravelso you go bare-bottom on your chair? Or do we have to put down a towel every time? What about public restrooms? Genuinely looking for these answers. I can't figure out how you keep your butt off the chair but clothing off the toilet seat.

HOW CAN I TRANSFER FROM THE WHEELCHAIR TO THE TOILET WITH ONE LEG TOTALLY PARALYSED?

How do you protect your private parts when transferring to and from toilet?

Honestly, I can't really say it's something we've considered. I guess the best way is to make sure you are getting a good lift when you transfer and not just sliding/dragging between the wheelchair and toilet
