Argueably Lucas has the saddest back story he was on vacation when his family got attacked and his mom died and then his brother goes missing and then also dies
for me, it was leder's speech, oddly enough. idk, just the way the wise old man tells you your life was a lie... it made me sad. the only thing to date that has made me that sad (but not to the point of crying) were charles' death, claus' death, and asriel's speech.
While Claus's death was heartbreaking, I feel like a more tearjerking death from Mother 3 is Hinawa's. I know that it was at the beginning of the game, and we barely knew anything about her. Hell, her death didn't actually occur on-screen. But Flint's reaction is what sells it for me. He reacts how any man can react upon hearing that his wife was just impaled through the heart. He falls apart in front of his friends and twin sons, still recovering from their own near-death experience. The way he pounds the ground in frustration absolutely broke my heart, because I felt that. I felt his pain in that moment.

Bro if you know the kirby lore and you fight the bosses you will feel bad for beating them up like take president haltman in kirby planet robobot as an example literally all he wanted was to revive his long lost daughter and then this giant machine that he built to revive her wiped his memory down to the soul and while he was building the machine he started going insane and lost track of the mission to save his daughter and in one of the boss bio's he says "Why did I reactivate such a terrible machine, oh wait... I just wanted to see my daughter one last time" and you start to feel even more bad when you are fighting this part in the boss fight when you are beating up the machine from the inside you can hear him screaming in absolute pain while tearing down the machine and then at the end you literally kill him directly right when I learned this and I beat the secret and true final boss I started ceying because I felt bad.

To this day, She wonders if she and her love, Blumiere, will ever meet again.
Any game can have a sad moment, But something about Nintendo’s execution of these moments is in a class of its own. Each one of these deserves to be remembered as what gaming can be, how, through the years, Nintendo has made us feel connected to these characters as if we were adventuring right there with them. Video games connect in a way that other media simply can’t, and I think that because of this these moments are so effective. I remember crying at each of these that I played and ones that I haven’t even gotten around to still made me teary eyed.

I never thought I'd feel bad over a bunch of robots, but that part in brawl made me lose it when I first played it. And the next time... And the next. And freaking Professor Layton. The hat just did it.
No character in Nintendo canon has as much grief, sadness, and depression than Lucas. First, he had to witness his own mother die. Then, he lost his brother the first time consciencely believing its his own fault for not stopping him. Next, he was forced to watch his while village become corrupted by the Pigmasks. Then finally, he had to witness his brother die in his arms after commiting suicide. Lucas is by far my favorite protag in a video game, and he needs a damn hug.
Well, the Lumas always reincarnate, and Emmeryn just barely survived her fall (though it left her in a brain-damaged state). And if you want to consider the final scene in Super Paper Mario's ending...

Any game can have a sad moment, But something about Nintendo’s execution of these moments is in a class of its own. Each one of these deserves to be remembered as what gaming can be, how, through the years, Nintendo has made us feel connected to these characters as if we were adventuring right there with them. Video games connect in a way that other media simply can’t, and I think that because of this these moments are so effective. I remember crying at each of these that I played and ones that I haven’t even gotten around to still made me teary eyed.

No character in Nintendo canon has as much grief, sadness, and depression than Lucas. First, he had to witness his own mother die. Then, he lost his brother the first time consciencely believing its his own fault for not stopping him. Next, he was forced to watch his while village become corrupted by the Pigmasks. Then finally, he had to witness his brother die in his arms after commiting suicide. Lucas is by far my favorite protag in a video game, and he needs a damn hug.
