YES! Dude. I owe you a beer(s) . Just learning F360, and have an older, slower laptop. You just changed my life. Even if it didn’t speed anything up directly, turning off “auto look at sketch” was AMAZING. I HATED when it spun around whenever it wanted. So THANK YOU!

A very helpful video. Thank you. I have trawled through all my preferences and made those adjustments. One thing I wish Fusion 360 had is to be able to suppress speculative processing by, say, holding down the CTRL key. For instance, when moving a cutting-plane using keyed numbers and angles, Fusion 360 jumps into processing as soon as you enter a number, even if all you are doing is backspacing over a value to enter a new one. For example, you have -60mm in the X-direction, then want 10mm. That is too much so you backspace over the -060, starting with the low-order zero, and immediately Fusion starts processing -6, even before you have time to backspace three times. You have to sit and wait three for it to get deleted all three numeric characters, then wait while it processes 1mm, because it didn't give you a chance to put 10 before it leapt into action. If we could hold down CTRL till we finished... (now I expect some Fusion 360 ninja will tell me that's already there...)

THIS!!! Wow! This video is gold. Thank you!
in 2018 I noticed a huge slow down in F360 on my PC to the point I started considering a different CAD program.
I will implement these new settings in hopes F360 still works on my PC.
Thank you for making this video. It is very helpful!

I'm mainly running Fusion on a 2008 Dell Xps L502X. Specified it for gaming back in the day.
    Has a i7 2630M @ 2 Ghz. 15" 1920x1080 screen.
Lots of upgrades over the years. 16 Gb ram, Samsung SSD. Changed the thermal paste at couple of times.
It's dual graphics, so I can force the internal screen on the Intel processor.
It's not a power house, but it works for what I use it for.

John, I looked at the specs of the computers on website recommendations. from the perspective of a systems engineer the recommendations are plain wrong, hardware wasteful and expensive . Fusion 360 its CPU bound intensive program and the gpu see little to no work load while you are scheting and moving the model around. I could elaborate more and give a more detailed general guidelines if you would like too. but I think the specs you give out are very counterproductive and detrimental to your audience to your audience.

Thanks John S. Very helpful for folks who have limited internet service like I do. I am fighting with my ISP over what they are delivering and what I paying for! This all came about when running Fusion360 on my computer after we moved, Same ISP, different location. Learning these tricks may help me speed up my computer work processing.

I have a full blown workstation but Fusion forces me to do renderings and simulations on the cloud which plain sucks...also the updates tend to break a lot of stuff! Fusion 360 is the best thing since sliced bread for hobbyist and I really appreciate that but when you depend on it for real work you're doing things wrong IMO. Getting a whole day behind schedule because for some reason Fusion stopped launching adds a lot of unnecessary stress on an already stressful job.

This is dirt cheap and runs Fusion at 1440p, with dual monitors with any settings on in Fusion you care to use. And try 1440p. You won't ever want to use 1080p again. Computer builds, repair and service are my day job... Fusion and the Tormach are my side gigs.

Running Fusion on both a PC with 6800k and a 1080ti with a 3840*1600 main screen as well as a Dell XPS 13. While the PC is obviously way faster, for just CAD the laptop is fine. Inventor or Solidworks was a pain to use on that laptop. Im running Fusion pretty much 'out-of-the-box' on both, looking forward to try some of the tweaks on the laptop.

I do work with large files on fusion 360 and i never had a problem with it, but since 2 weeks ago out of the blue, the files that i was used to work with normally, now takes about an hour to open up, and sometimes does not even open and fusion crashes; and if it open fusion is now very slow that i can not even keep working on the file.

Does a second monitor really make a difference? Most of what your graphics card is doing is the heavy duty math to render the image. Just pumping an image to the monitor shouldn't be much of a burden.

    • @nzjdmsti

Correct if you are just viewing a drawing or something static it uses next to no gpu resources as if the frame has not changed the gpu will just reuse the previous frame. If your playing a game on the other monitor then sure it's gonna use most of the gpus resources but not a static screen

I am doing dual 4k monitor, Nvidia 1070, core i7, ssd. The only part of fusion 360 that I find slow is tool path generation.
I do not believe that the dual monitor is slowing down fusion as the stuff on the other monitor is usually very light weight. It uses memory on the gfx card for sure, but there is enough.

Have you seen the specs on the Intel NUC NUC8i7HVK ($870) ? Or perhaps the NUC8i7HNK ($700) might be up to the task.
Add upto 32Gb RAM, a SSD, and Windows... and think makes sense for low budget desktop (or mount it onto the back of a monitor with the supplied VESA mount).

I have a $4000 computer I recently have been using for fusion 360, and there is a lot of times the program freezes up. I'm talking Samsung m.2 ssds, 32gb of ddr4 overclocked, an i7 that is overclocked, a 2080Ti, a bunch of insanely fast parts. I got it for gaming, and also 3D modeling for 3D printer stuff. Why is it freezing up? The CPU usage hardly ever spikes past 30%, I have fusion set as high priority, but I can't even model rack and pinion track without it freezing for 5 seconds. Solid works will mesh an incredibly complex high resolution stl file like nothing, just a spike in CPU usage. But I like fusion it is so much faster to make concept ideas without having to define every little thing.

Fusion 360 is single core based for cad and cam. Fusion runs better on higher frequency CPUs so 4ghz or more is better.

Solidworks is not really compareable with Fusion360. It's more Inventor Solidworks.
And Autodesk is also telling you that when you have to work with realy big constuctions then use Inventor
A good example is the MarbleMachineX project from Wintergatan: ua-cam.com/video/9zL8pRDxPck/v-deo.html

    • @BaldurNorddahl

Overclock means you are going over spec and therefore more likely to have errors. The program might be crashing because you pushed it too much.

    • @johngriffin618
      @johngriffin618 5 років тому

Thanks guys, I'll check out inventor. I just tried fusion, haven't used it before I usually use solid works, but I was blown away with how fast I can prototype parts. And I only overclocked it a lil bit, to clock speeds the parts are rated for (I have K version of CPU, and memory is made for OC'ng too plus has coolers on it.)
Didn't know fusion was single core though that explains a lot. Thanks!!

Hi, i have had some of the same problems, altough not with a computer as beefy as yours. How is your graphics card usage, when running Fusion? For me this command "options.devicetype /hal" and then "options.save", worked to make it a lot more responsive and stop crashing for me at least. Can anyone tell me if Fusion 360 scales with the number of cores a CPU. Is there a limit to the number of cores it can utilize or does it scale up infinitely with bigger and bigger work loads?

    • @Adrian-yn4qg
      @Adrian-yn4qg 4 роки тому

Actually I read your link and found the information there. From what that said an ideal budget PC build would be something like this:
      AMD 3600 CPU
GPU based in intended work load and budget (more is better)
Fast small NVME SSD (250-500 gigs), with additional HDD mass storage if needed
16 of 3600mhz RAM (general sweat spot for RAM on AMD)
Power supply will of course depend on GPU and total draw of the system
I figured I'd post it if anyone else could benefit from it here. There's plenty of PC build guides out there and I'll bet anyone handy enough to like your channel can easily build themselves the perfect little PC with these components, and all for under $1,000.

Gonna have to disagree with the resolution / monitor size. If you haven't worked in fusion with a large monitor in high resolution (28" and 3840 x 2160) your are missing out on so much screen real estate. I recently upgraded my laptop and monitor and the difference and ease of work is incomparable.

What sort of file is your Mt Hood? It mills! It mills! It mills! My STL file looks fine, like yours, but simulated milling plows through it as if it were not there (I have an STL mesh atop an extruded base, a base with other extruded bits and pieces attached). The extruded bits mill fine; the STL on top displays but is ignored. So how have you persuaded it to see exactly what you see--true WYSIWYG? (My STL is too big to be converted into a BREP, and defies all attempts to make it a quad-mesh in other software so that I can convert it to a T-spline in Fusion 360.)

Anyone who can afford a CNC machine doesn't need to penny pinch on their CAD/CAM design workstation.
Using a cheap or poorly-featured PC is just reducing your productivity, and so it is costing you (or your company) time and money. It's a false economy.
The CPU speed is less important than the amount of RAM, which should be 8GB minimum, and more sensibly 16GB. Trying to do CAD work with 4GB is for masochists only.
An i5 or i7 based CPU should be fine, even if it not the very latest generation model. For CAD work, single core-performance is still MORE important than the number of cores.
(There are very few use-cases where CAD users actually need to spend crazy money on multi-CPU XEON server based motherboards)
As a nice graphics card is now cheaper than a mediocre lathe chuck, don't scrimp on that, as NVIDIA CUDA processing makes a huge difference to the model rendering update speed.
By having multiple 27" monitors at 1920x1080 you can view the customer's PDF design documents, a web-browser, and the CAD software side-by-side without needing to constantly alt-tab to switch between them.
After much experimentation, I have found that 3 monitors is the optimal number for CAD work. In my experience, the number of monitors has no discernible affect on the speed of the CAD software.

    • @RenThraysk
      @RenThraysk 5 років тому

Er... I think what you mean is the PC cost should be relative to the cost of the CNC machine.
Don't think anyone needs that kind of setup to run a 3D Printer costing even a few thousand. I believe Fusion 360 is still free for hobbyists.

I’m gonna wager this video wasn’t produced for the guy with a shop full of machines running 24-7. I’ll go out on a limb and say this was designed to help folks just starting out. The guy who is taking advantage of a capable, free, CAD program. The guy trying to further his skill set, using the equipment he has. The 12 year boy or girl who sees a robot being built on UA-cam and gets inspired to try and use Fusion on his hand me down computer. The students in the local high school who don’t have the luxury of a $3000 machine.

    • @Jimmeh_B

@@chrisj4570g yeah, bang on, but this can be done on a 300 dollar 2nd hand machine... If you're like I was at that age, and you already know enough that you're confident enough to take on any of these topics chances are you're also resourceful enough to build one for free.
Also, kids with that level of understanding are generally also happy to wait the 36 hours for a render.

There is no such thing as a "solid state hard drive" there are hard drives and solid state drives which are named like this because of the fundamental difference in the way they are constructed and the way they work.

If you can keep RDR2 above 60fps then Fusion 360 will be a cake walk 😂

Fusion 360 is bogging down, but it's not using the power of the PC that it has at it's disposal. CPU and RAM use stays fairly low. I dunno what it's problem is?... It should use the CPU and RAM and stop being dramatic...

Why on earth would you upload anything to the cloud? By doing so, you are giving away your rights to the data. It's a totally unnecessary "technology" who's cons far outweigh it's "pro's".

Fusion is free to use for anyone not using it for business purposes.
My guess is that 80% of the people here are private users who like to learn..
