I've backpacked, I've even done some winter ultralight camping, and I've car camped with the gang at state and national parks. It is all good, I can't criticize anyone who enjoys any of it.
Nick, just the opposite. Hypothermia guaranteed in winter! Have you ever tried winter camping with an air gap below you? Air provides no insulation whatsoever. Trust me here. I'm Canadian and have camped in minus 30° winter weather. Only snow provides insulation. Ask any Eskimo!

I used to car camp in my 93 volvo station wagon. So much fun ! I really miss that car.
