the tomahawks head was often removed to use a tool for finer tasks, that's why they commonly don't have a wedge keeping the head on. It was like a knife-hatchet, it's not great at either tasks, but has more control when compared to a hatchet.

I appreciate that you are honest about the tools & equipment you use. not everyone needs the most expensive tools, as long as you know how to use them properly. from my experience I have "devolved" my equipment to more basic tools over time as I've gained knowledge.

Always spitting great information Gordon!! I had my Swiss fold on my finger canoeing the Colorado River in Boyscouts. It only takes one time to learn unfortunately. Keep up the good work Gordon

I differ on the tomahawks being less useful than a hatchet. I have used both and honestly I have felled a tree with a tomahawk before. Granted, it wasn’t the most fun I’ve ever had, but it’s more than doable

In the Southern Swamps a machete or kukri is the tool of choice. Currently, my Cold Steel kukri is my go-to. Works as a clearing machete as well as a light hatchet. That and a folding saw takes care of wood needs.

Folder, SAK/multitool, fixed blade, machete, hatchet, folding saw, and a two-handed axe. The rough continuum of need, from EDC to winter survival. For me it's Ti Hogue Deka, Victorinox Spirit MX, Bark River Ext-1, Condor Amalgam, Husqvarna 19" hatchet, and a Bahco Laplander

I need someone recently this year bought me a gerber Bushcraft hatchet and personally I am absolutely loving it. Anytime I need to split some firewood I use that on the smaller pieces and it's just an all around really good hatchet in my opinion. The only issue I've had with it is the little cap on the base of the handle came loose after using it for a while but I was able to go that back on with some gorilla glue no problem. I really want to look at getting myself a gerber Bushcraft acts when I get the chance.

Fully agree, I have several models. The Hudson Bay or Trailhawk are my current go-to's , depending on where I'm going. Recommends a machete and hatchet but not a tomahawk?

You may as well use my name when you say "purists" because i know you're talking to me.😂 I'm surprised you mentioned batoning a knife but not banoning an axe. It's safer than swinging an axe especially for younger people or beginners. Excuse me, i have to go and apply some boiled linseed oil to the handles of my tools and walnut oil to a kuksa. I'm just past the "once a day for a week" stage 😂

Grew up around Tradesmen and outdoors people so I sort of forget there are people who didn't grow up with this kind of knowledge. I enjoyed that you approached the items of gear as tools, people can get a little fetishistic on the subject of sharp pointy things. Totally agree on your opinions of Mora's. They are well made enough to do a good job, you can learn to sharpen with good steel but you can make your mistakes without breaking the bank if you need to replace. Might I suggest Opinels as a good starter folder? Easy to use, even for smaller/weaker hands and has some similar qualities to a Mora, good steel, inexpensive and so on.
